How to compare phones by total cost, warranty, and after-sales service

The cheapest phone to buy is not always the cheapest to own. Compare each candidate over the same expected ownership period, add financing charges, likely repair bills, protection-plan costs and service access expenses, then subtract a realistic resale or trade-in value. Only after that should you compare warranty coverage and the practical quality of local service.

Use current terms for the exact model, storage version and country where you will buy and repair the phone. Warranty exclusions, repair prices, consumer-law rights and service routes vary by market and can change over time.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Start with one ownership period and one set of assumptions

A fair comparison gives every phone the same time horizon. Choose the period that matches your buying habit: for example, the number of months until you normally replace a handset. Do not compare one phone over two years with another over four years, because the longer period naturally creates more repair opportunities and a different resale value.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Define the period before looking at prices

  • Write down the planned ownership length in months.
  • Use the same replacement date for every candidate.
  • State whether you will keep the phone, trade it in, sell it privately or give it to someone else.
  • Record the date and country for every price and warranty term.

If a phone is likely to receive software support for fewer months than your planned period, record that as a separate ownership risk rather than quietly shortening the comparison. This article focuses on cost, warranty and service; software-support length still affects resale value and should be noted in your assumptions.

iFixit Pro Tech Toolkit - Electronics, Smartphone, Computer & Tablet Repair Kit
  • The original electronics toolkit: Designed for computer, smartphone, tablet, and gaming repair, backed by thousands of free instructions.
  • Intentional selection: All the tools you need. A 64 precision bit driver set, tweezers, flex extension, opening tools, and anti-static wristband.
  • Secure design: Magnetic case and foam insert ensure secure storage and transportation. Additionally, the inside of the lid serves as a sorting/organization tray.
  • Lifetime Warranty: We'll replace anything that breaks, as long as you own it.

Use total outlay, not the launch price

The basic calculation is:

Total ownership cost = transaction cost + expected repairs + protection-plan premiums and service fees + service-access costs − resale or trade-in proceeds.

Transaction cost includes the amount charged to your payment method, interest or finance charges, mandatory activation or delivery fees and any tax that is part of the purchase in your location. A discount should count only if you can actually obtain it under the same conditions as the other phones. If financing is advertised as interest-free, check for account fees, required plans or a higher cash price.

Expected repairs means the current local prices for failures or damage that are plausible during the period. Do not insert made-up probabilities simply to produce a precise-looking number. List the repair scenarios, assign a cost to each from a local service quote, and show which scenarios you have and have not included.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Resale and trade-in values are estimates, not guaranteed income. Record the condition required to receive the quoted amount, whether the offer is cash or store credit, and whether the value expires. A trade-in quote that requires an undamaged screen should not be used unchanged for a phone whose screen-repair risk you have already modelled.

Cost worksheet

Item What to record Why it changes the decision
Purchase transaction Cash price, tax, delivery and mandatory fees A low advertised price can become higher at checkout.
Financing Total repayments, interest and account fees Monthly affordability can hide a higher total.
Repairs Current local quotes for screen, battery, port, camera and other likely faults One expensive repair can erase a purchase-price advantage.
Protection plan Premium, deductible or service fee, shipping and claim limits The plan may cost more than saving for an occasional repair.
Service access Travel, courier, packaging, data-transfer or temporary-phone costs A nominally cheap repair is less useful if service is difficult to reach.
Exit value Expected resale or trade-in proceeds at the chosen date Higher residual value reduces net ownership cost.

Build the comparison step by step

  1. Freeze the candidates. List the exact model, storage capacity, connectivity version and sales channel. Different regional versions can have different warranties and repair parts.
  2. Set the holding period. Put the start date, planned end date and replacement reason at the top of the worksheet.
  3. Capture the real transaction cost. Save the checkout total and financing schedule rather than copying a headline price.
  4. Collect repair quotes. Ask authorized centers and reputable independent providers for the same repair scenarios. Keep quotes dated and identify whether each amount is fixed or an estimate.
  5. Price service access. Add shipping, travel, packaging and any cost of being without the handset. If a center offers a loaner, record the conditions.
  6. Price protection separately. Add every premium and per-claim charge; do not treat an advertised monthly amount as the complete cost.
  7. Estimate the exit value. Use a current buyback or trade-in quote for the phone’s expected condition, and record whether payment is cash or credit.
  8. Calculate net cost. Add the ownership costs and subtract the exit value. Show each assumption beside the result so another person can reproduce it.
  9. Run a sensitivity check. Recalculate with no repair, one major repair and the plan’s maximum likely claim cost. This shows whether your conclusion depends on one uncertain assumption.

The result is a decision aid, not a promise that a particular failure will occur. A transparent range is more honest than a single number built from invented failure rates.

Separate manufacturer warranty, consumer rights and damage protection

A manufacturer’s limited warranty normally addresses defects in materials or workmanship for a stated period. It is not the same thing as accidental-damage insurance, and it does not replace statutory consumer rights. In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission explains what warranties may promise and what consumers should check, including whether the remedy is repair, replacement or a refund: FTC warranty guidance. The legal rules in that guidance are U.S.-specific; other countries can provide different mandatory remedies.

Apple states that its limited warranty and AppleCare coverage are additional to consumer-law rights, and that service choices depend on the product and the location where service is requested. Questions to ask for every warranty

Question Evidence to save
What defects are covered? The written definition of defects and the warranty duration for this model and market.
What is excluded? Accidental drops, cracked glass, liquid exposure, cosmetic damage, unauthorized modifications and consumable parts.
What is the remedy? Repair, replacement, refund, refurbished unit or another remedy, including who chooses it.
What proof is required? Receipt, serial number, account record, activation date or proof of purchase.
Where can you claim? Authorized walk-in, mail-in, pickup, mobile technician or another route available at your address.
What happens to data? Backup, reset and data-loss responsibilities before inspection.
What guarantee follows service? Duration and scope of the parts and repair guarantee.

Accidental and liquid damage are separate decisions

Apple’s Ireland iPhone repair information says accidental damage and normal battery wear are not covered by its warranty. It also states that Apple provides a 90-day service-and-parts guarantee or the remaining warranty term, whichever is longer, for the services described on that page. Those details apply to the linked Ireland terms and should not be transferred automatically to another country: Apple iPhone service and repair.

Google’s Pixel repair-charge guidance illustrates why an “in-warranty” label is not a guarantee that every repair is free. It identifies cracked screens, cosmetic or liquid damage and some internal damage among categories that may not be covered. Google also warns that a repair estimate can change after technicians inspect the device: Google Pixel in-warranty repair charges.

When comparing phones, put accidental-damage coverage in a protection-plan column rather than in the standard-warranty column. If a plan covers drops or liquid, record the deductible, claim cap and approved repair route separately from the manufacturer’s defect warranty.

Evaluate after-sales service as a local process

After-sales service is not an abstract brand score. It is the route available to you, the time and cost of reaching it, the information required to open a claim and the result you receive after inspection. Compare only service options that exist in the country where you will use the phone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Map the complete repair journey

  1. Find the eligibility page. Enter the model, serial number or IMEI where the manufacturer provides a checker. Google offers a country-specific warranty eligibility tool: Pixel warranty eligibility.
  2. Identify the service channel. Note whether the address has an authorized walk-in center, mobile service, mail-in repair or pickup. A mail-in option should include outbound and return shipping instructions.
  3. Check preparation duties. Confirm backup, factory reset, account removal, SIM or eSIM handling and packaging requirements.
  4. Ask how estimates work. Determine whether the quoted amount is fixed, conditional on inspection or subject to approval before extra work.
  5. Record turnaround information. If no guaranteed time is published, write “not stated” instead of assuming a fast repair.
  6. Read the post-repair guarantee. Capture the period covering parts and labor and what happens if the same fault returns.

Examples of route-specific terms

Samsung’s U.S. mobile warranty terms describe authorized walk-in, mobile or mail-in service and require proof of purchase. They also contain specific conditions for battery coverage. Those are U.S. terms, so verify the warranty supplied with the exact phone and market before using them in a comparison: Samsung U.S. mobile warranty terms.

Apple says service options depend on the product and the location where service is requested. A phone that can be repaired at a nearby authorized center should receive a different service-access assessment from one that must be shipped across a border, even if both have similar written warranties.

Service comparison table

Service factor Candidate A Candidate B How to judge it
Nearest authorized option Record city, distance or courier route Record city, distance or courier route Prefer verified access in the buyer’s actual location.
Claim opening Website, phone, store or app Website, phone, store or app Note account and proof-of-purchase requirements.
Inspection estimate Fixed or changeable after inspection Fixed or changeable after inspection A changeable estimate needs a contingency in the cost model.
Shipping and travel Who pays and how much Who pays and how much Add the amount to ownership cost.
Repair guarantee Term stated in local conditions Term stated in local conditions “Not stated” is a valid finding when the terms omit it.
Replacement procedure Repair, replacement or refund conditions Repair, replacement or refund conditions Do not assume replacement is automatic.

Price protection plans and extended service contracts mathematically

A protection plan can be valuable when a likely repair is expensive, service is hard to access or a household cannot absorb a large unexpected bill. It can be poor value when the premium, deductible and exclusions leave you paying nearly the same amount as an uncovered repair.

The FTC’s U.S. consumer guidance recommends checking the initial price and later charges such as deductibles and service fees, and asking whether the contract duplicates coverage you already have. The agency’s wording is: “Look at the initial cost of the extended warranty or service contract, and costs that could come up later, such as deductibles or fees you pay each time there is service.” Read the full guidance at FTC extended-warranty and service-contract advice.

Put every plan cost in one row

Plan term Record
Premium One-time price or all monthly payments over your ownership period.
Deductible or service fee Amount charged for each approved claim and whether it varies by damage type.
Shipping and handling Outbound and return charges, packaging and any inspection fee.
Coverage trigger Accidental damage, mechanical failure, liquid damage, theft or another defined event.
Exclusions Cosmetic damage, lost devices, unauthorized repairs, pre-existing damage, battery wear or usage limits.
Claim limits Maximum number of claims, maximum payout and whether the plan ends after replacement.
Overlap Benefits already supplied by the manufacturer’s warranty, retailer, bank or household insurance.

Compare the plan’s total possible cost with a self-funded repair reserve. Saving the same premium in an account may be preferable for a person who can tolerate the risk and whose phone has affordable local repairs. A plan is more defensible when one covered incident would create serious financial strain, but that judgment depends on the actual contract rather than the plan’s name.

Use repair-price evidence without mistaking it for a quote

Repair prices change with labor rates, parts availability, taxes, exchange rates and the country where the work is performed. The European Commission’s 2023 impact-assessment analysis of 52 smartphones reported average display replacement at about 42% of the average new-smartphone purchase price and battery replacement at about 14%. These are historical sample averages, not current prices for a particular model and not universal probabilities. The assessment notes that repair-service cost varies by country: European Commission impact assessment PDF.

Turn a general figure into a local estimate

  • Get a screen-replacement quote for the exact storage and regional model.
  • Ask whether the quoted part is genuine, refurbished or compatible, and whether that affects the warranty.
  • Confirm whether water-resistance testing, adhesive replacement and calibration are included.
  • Request a battery-replacement price that states labor, parts and any diagnostic fee.
  • Ask what happens if inspection finds frame damage or another fault.
  • Save the quote’s expiry date; parts and labor prices can change.

Do not infer that a phone with a lower average repair ratio will always be cheaper to repair. A local center may stock one model’s parts and ship another model abroad, reversing the apparent advantage.

Battery work and self-service limits

Rechargeable batteries have finite lifespans. Apple recommends trained technicians for battery replacement and offers Self Service Repair for certain models and regions with genuine parts, tools and manuals. Availability is limited by model and location, so do not assume a generic toolkit fits your phone or that battery replacement is a casual do-it-yourself task: Apple information about genuine iPhone batteries.

Apply legal and regional caveats correctly

Warranty language and consumer protection are jurisdiction-specific. The FTC materials are useful U.S. consumer guidance, not a worldwide legal summary. The FTC also explains that U.S. warranty providers generally cannot require specified parts or services for warranty coverage unless those parts or services are provided free or the provider has an applicable waiver. Read the current U.S. guidance at FTC Warranties, and obtain local legal advice for disputes outside the United States.

Before ranking phones, verify all of the following for the buyer’s country:

  • Who the legal seller is and whether the phone is an imported version.
  • Mandatory statutory remedies and their duration.
  • Whether the warranty follows the device, the original purchaser or the sales region.
  • Whether an authorized center accepts units bought from another country.
  • Taxes, customs and shipping for cross-border repair.
  • Current local prices for parts, labor and protection plans.

Manufacturer pages can change. Save a PDF or dated screenshot of the terms used in your comparison, and identify the edition or market in your notes.

Make the decision with a transparent scorecard

Do not award a phone a vague “best service” badge without comparable local evidence. Score only information you have verified, and leave unknown cells marked as not stated.

Decision axis Evidence to compare Good practice
Net ownership cost Transaction cost, repairs, plan fees, access costs and exit value Use the same period and show assumptions.
Warranty scope Covered defects, exclusions, remedy and duration Separate defects from accidental damage and battery wear.
Claim friction Proof, eligibility check, reset and inspection steps Count time and data-transfer work as practical costs.
Repair accessibility Walk-in, mobile, pickup or mail-in routes near the user Verify that the route exists in the buyer’s country.
Price certainty Fixed quote versus estimate that can change after inspection Keep a contingency instead of treating an estimate as guaranteed.
Post-repair protection Parts-and-labor guarantee and repeat-fault procedure Record the exact term or write “not stated.”
Protection-plan value Premium, deductible, limits, exclusions and overlap Compare with the cost of saving for repairs.

A practical decision sequence

  1. Eliminate any phone that cannot be legally serviced or returned through a route available to you.
  2. Calculate net ownership cost for the base case with no major repair.
  3. Run the one-major-repair case using a current local quote.
  4. Run the protection-plan case with every premium, deductible and shipping charge.
  5. Read the warranty exclusions and confirm what happens to accidental, liquid and battery damage.
  6. Choose the phone whose cost and service result remains acceptable across the scenarios you can realistically tolerate.

This method can produce different winners for different buyers. Someone living near an authorized center may rationally choose a phone with a slightly higher purchase price, while someone comfortable with mail-in service may prioritize lower net cost. The evidence should determine the conclusion, not a generic brand reputation.

Common comparison mistakes and how to correct them

Comparing sticker prices only

Problem: The comparison ignores finance charges, repairs and exit value.
Correction: Use the ownership-cost worksheet and save the checkout total.

Treating “in warranty” as “free for every problem”

Problem: Accidental, liquid, cosmetic and battery-wear exclusions are overlooked.
Correction: Read the exclusions and place damage protection in a separate plan column.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using a repair estimate as a guaranteed price

Problem: Inspection discovers additional damage and the final bill rises.
Correction: Record whether the quote can change and model a contingency.

Ranking service globally

Problem: A favorable U.S. route is assumed to exist in another country.
Correction: Verify local centers, shipping, proof requirements and legal remedies for the buyer’s address.

Buying a plan without checking overlap

Problem: The plan duplicates included warranty or another policy while adding a deductible.
Correction: Compare the contract line by line with existing coverage and calculate the maximum claim cost.

Assuming a generic DIY repair is safe

Problem: The wrong part or tool causes further damage or affects eligibility for service.
Correction: Use only manufacturer instructions for an eligible model and region, and compare the complete DIY cost with trained service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final decision rule

Choose the phone with the lowest acceptable net cost over your chosen ownership period, provided its warranty covers the defects you care about and its repair route is genuinely available where you live. Keep accidental-damage protection, consumer-law rights and standard defect warranty as separate lines in the comparison. If a key local price or service term is unknown, label it clearly and verify it before purchase rather than turning an assumption into a ranking.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
