To change the image shown when someone shares a WooCommerce product link, set the product’s featured image, then add a product-specific social image in your SEO plugin if you need a different preview. Configure a default social image as a fallback for pages without their own image. The setup below is general WordPress and WooCommerce guidance; the official documentation reviewed does not describe a separate India-specific Open Graph procedure.
How do I set Open Graph images for a WooCommerce store in India?
Open Graph images come from metadata in a page’s HTML head. An SEO plugin can generate that metadata and choose an image for each product page, with defaults for pages that do not have a more specific image. First identify which plugin is emitting social tags; avoid having multiple plugins emit duplicate Open Graph tags.

The steps below use Yoast because its documentation specifies the image-selection order and the product social controls. Labels and available controls can vary with the installed plugin version, so confirm them in your own WordPress dashboard.
Set the product’s main image in WooCommerce
- In WordPress, open Products and edit the product.
- Set the intended main product image as the product’s Product image (featured image).
- Add other views or angles to the Product gallery if they help shoppers assess the item.
- Save or update the product.
WooCommerce describes the featured image as the large image used on an individual product detail page. Catalog images are used in product loops such as shop and category views. The featured image is a useful source for social metadata, but it does not prevent you from choosing a different image specifically for a link preview. WooCommerce: Adding and Managing Products

Choose a separate social image for a product
Use a per-product social image when the store image is not composed well for a shared link—for example, if its framing or layout is unsuitable for the preview. With Yoast, edit the product and open its Social tab or social appearance controls. Set the social image there; Yoast also documents controls for a custom social title and description. Save the product after making changes. Yoast: Setting up social templates
There is no single image dimension established here as ideal for every sharing service. Choose an image that clearly represents the product, and check how the destination service displays it rather than assuming all services use the same crop or preview.
How Yoast chooses an Open Graph image
Yoast documents this `og:image` precedence. A more specific image higher in the list can take priority over a general default:
- A user-defined Facebook or social image.
- A featured image for supported post content.
- A prominent image in the page content.
- The first image in the WooCommerce product gallery, when Yoast WooCommerce SEO is active.
- The template’s social default image.
- The site’s default social image.
The product-gallery fallback is specific to Yoast WooCommerce SEO; it is not an unconditional WooCommerce core rule. The order above is Yoast’s documented behavior, not a guarantee about other SEO plugins or every installed version. Yoast Open Graph functional specification
Set a default social image and handle the homepage
Configure a default social image in the available Yoast template or site social settings. It acts as a fallback where a page has no higher-priority image; it does not replace a social image set on an individual product.
Homepage settings depend on the site’s homepage type:
- Static homepage: edit the page used as the homepage and set its social appearance there.
- Latest-posts homepage: use Yoast’s homepage content settings.
Check the current settings in the version of Yoast installed on your site, since the exact controls may change. Yoast: Setting up social templates
Open Graph settings versus Meta catalog images
A product’s Open Graph metadata determines the social information emitted for a shared page. Meta for WooCommerce also offers a Facebook product-image choice between using the WooCommerce image and providing a custom image URL. That is a Meta catalog setting, not a universal Open Graph control for WhatsApp, Pinterest, LinkedIn, or other services. Meta for WooCommerce documentation

- Save the product or page after changing its social image.
- Inspect the public page’s HTML head and find the `og:image` tag. Confirm that it appears once and points to the intended image.
- Test the page URL in the destination app or a sharing preview tool available for that service.
- If the preview differs from the page metadata, check the destination service’s own rendering and caching behavior; do not assume that every service refreshes or crops previews identically.
Yoast notes that Open Graph data is consumed by Facebook, Pinterest, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, and Google. That does not mean those services present an identical preview. Yoast Open Graph functional specification
Common setup problems
- The wrong product image appears: check whether a product-specific social image is set, then inspect the emitted `og:image` and the active plugin’s documented fallback rules.
- Two `og:image` tags appear: check which plugins emit social metadata and avoid configuring multiple plugins to generate duplicate Open Graph tags.
- The product gallery image is not used as a fallback: Yoast documents that gallery step when Yoast WooCommerce SEO is active; do not expect it from WooCommerce core alone.
- The page source looks right but a share preview does not: the destination app may render or cache previews differently. Test through the destination’s available preview workflow; the documentation cited here does not establish a universal refresh interval or cache-clearing fix.
