In OBS, configure YouTube delivery and local recording separately: open Settings → Output, change Output Mode to Advanced, then set the Streaming and Recording tabs for their different jobs. For YouTube, use a supported codec, CBR, and a 2-second keyframe interval; choose recording quality and encoder settings based on the archive you need and what your computer and storage can sustain. Test the complete setup before leaving it unattended: YouTube warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured in its automatic archive.
Why streaming and recording need different settings
A live stream has to deliver a predictable bitrate to YouTube’s ingestion servers. A local recording instead aims for a useful balance of image quality, file size, and encoder load. The best setting for one job is not automatically best for the other.

In OBS, Same as stream is a simple recording option, but it uses the stream’s encoder settings and OBS says recordings using it cannot be paused. A separate recording encoder or quality setting gives you more control over the local file, but can add system load. OBS explains the available output modes and recording choices in its recording guide.

| Output | Main goal | Typical rate-control approach | What to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube stream | Stable delivery at the chosen resolution and frame rate | CBR, as required by YouTube’s live encoder guidance | Upload headroom, stream health, and continuous encoder performance |
| Local recording | Keep an archive at the desired quality and manageable size | Use a recording-quality preset or encoder-specific quality mode | CPU/GPU capacity, disk space, and whether the file continues growing |
Set up YouTube streaming in OBS
- In OBS, open Settings → Output. Set Output Mode to Advanced.
- Open the Streaming tab and select an encoder supported by both your computer and your YouTube stream setup. YouTube’s current guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS delivery and H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video encoding, up to 60 fps. The encoder options actually available vary by hardware, operating system, and drivers.
- Set the rate control to CBR and the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Use RTMPS when available for encrypted delivery, following the ingest details shown for your stream in YouTube Studio.
- Choose output resolution and frame rate your computer can encode continuously. YouTube’s H.264 bitrate guidance includes the following examples; do not apply these H.264 values to H.265 or AV1, which use separate recommendations.
| H.264 stream format | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 or 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube Help recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection or machine will handle them. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for codec-specific guidance. YouTube recommends testing upload speed and keeping about 20% bandwidth headroom. For example, a stream configured at 10 Mbps needs more than 10 Mbps of stable available upload capacity; other devices and traffic can use the remainder.

YouTube’s advice is explicit: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” See its encoder settings guidance and streaming tips.
Choose local recording settings
In Settings → Output → Recording, choose whether the local archive should match the stream or use its own recording quality and encoder. A separate recording can preserve more detail than a bandwidth-limited stream, but the added encoding work must fit within the computer’s resources.
Use Same as stream for a simpler, lighter setup
Choose Same as stream when you want one set of encoded output settings and do not need to pause the recording. It avoids configuring a distinct recording encoder, but also ties the local file to the stream’s bitrate and quality decisions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse a separate encoder when the archive matters
OBS’s Advanced Recording Settings guide gives these encoder-specific baselines for recording. Treat them as starting points rather than universal best settings; available options and performance depend on your encoder, hardware, drivers, and OBS version.

| QuickSync | ICQ 16–23; target usage TU4; High profile; keyframe interval 2; normal latency; three B-frames |
OBS presents these as baselines that correspond to Simple output recording presets, not as tested guarantees for a 24/7 system. For definitions and encoder-specific notes, see the OBS guide.
Pick a quality preset with file size in mind
OBS describes High Quality as high quality with medium file size, and Indistinguishable as higher quality with larger files and possible performance impact on older or weaker hardware. Its Lossless option uses the CPU encoder and can produce about 7 GB per minute, according to the OBS Recording Encoder Presets Guide (2023). That scale makes Lossless an unsuitable default for most continuous local archives.
Hardware encoding can move work from the CPU to specialized GPU hardware, which OBS recommends considering for performance. However, older hardware encoders may deliver lower image quality at the same bitrate than software x264 using its default veryfast preset. Check which encoders your system exposes and test them with representative video and audio; OBS discusses the trade-offs in its hardware encoding guide.
Plan for storage and YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit
Do not assume one continuous YouTube event lasting a day or longer will leave a complete platform archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its archive live streams guidance states: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.”

If preserving the entire feed matters, record locally while streaming and plan how to rotate, store, and verify those files. OBS supports recording while streaming, but you remain responsible for available disk capacity and confirming the recording is working. Estimate storage from the recording’s actual bitrate and duration: higher quality or longer sessions require more space. Make sure the destination drive has room for the intended run, and check that the file is growing before leaving the stream unattended.
YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup and checking archive files in its streaming tips. The official guidance does not establish a single OBS rotation schedule that will work for every setup, so test the event and file workflow you intend to use.
Test the full 24/7 setup before relying on it
- Match settings to real content: Test representative motion and audio at the resolution and frame rate you plan to use. A static test screen alone may not reveal issues with your actual loop.
- Check the connection: Confirm stable upload capacity with YouTube’s recommended roughly 20% reserve. If the connection cannot keep up, OBS troubleshooting guidance recommends lowering the bitrate.
- Check YouTube’s side: Run a test stream and inspect the preview and stream health, along with audio and video quality.
- Check the local archive: Confirm the recording file is growing, then open or otherwise verify the resulting file after a test.
- Plan recovery and supervision: OBS includes an automatic reconnect control, but reconnect does not guarantee the PC, power, network, media source, or stream will remain available continuously.
For these checks, consult YouTube’s encoder settings, YouTube’s streaming tips, and the OBS stream connection troubleshooting guide.
Troubleshoot common stream and recording problems
YouTube reports unstable stream health or dropped frames
Likely cause: The upload connection cannot sustain the configured bitrate, or competing traffic is reducing available capacity. Fix: Test the connection under representative conditions, reserve upload headroom, and lower the bitrate if it cannot keep up. If possible, reduce resolution or frame rate as well, then test again.

The stream looks blocky or soft
Likely cause: The bitrate is low for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate, or the encoder is struggling. Fix: Check YouTube’s recommendation for the exact codec and format rather than borrowing H.264 figures for another codec. Test a lower resolution or frame rate if the available upload bandwidth or encoding capacity is limited.
The local recording stops or the disk fills
Likely cause: The recording needs more storage than the destination has available, especially with a high-quality preset or a long run. Fix: Estimate capacity from the chosen recording settings and planned duration, check free space before starting, and verify file growth during the test. Avoid Lossless for a continuous recording unless you have deliberately planned for its very large files.
The recording adds encoder overload or affects the stream
Likely cause: A separate recording encoder is adding work the computer cannot sustain alongside streaming. Fix: Test the full simultaneous workload; try a hardware encoder if available, reduce recording quality or output dimensions, or use Same as stream if its limitations are acceptable. OBS notes that hardware encoder capabilities vary and older implementations can have quality trade-offs.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The stream disconnects and OBS reconnects, but the run is still not dependable
Likely cause: Automatic reconnect only addresses a stream connection interruption; it cannot keep a powered-off or crashed computer, failed internet connection, unavailable source file, or full drive working. Fix: Include power, network, media, storage, and monitoring checks in the operating plan instead of treating reconnect as a guarantee of uninterrupted operation.
