To stop echo in an OBS YouTube loop stream, keep viewer audio on the normal stream-output path, turn monitoring off for sources you do not need to hear locally, and remove any duplicate audio capture. If you need to listen to a source privately, choose the intended monitoring device in OBS and enable monitoring only for that source. Do not route the monitoring output or YouTube playback back into OBS as another program source.
Know what OBS audio monitoring changes
Monitoring is the audio OBS plays back through a separately configured monitoring device; it is not the same as sending audio to viewers. The OBS Project’s Audio Mixer Guide describes the monitor button as playing a source through the monitoring device configured in Settings. The exact labels can vary slightly with OBS version and localization, so check the options shown in your installed version.

- Monitor Off: OBS does not play that source through the monitoring device, while its normal stream or recording output can remain active.
- Monitor Only (mute output): You can hear the source through monitoring, but it is muted from the stream and recording output.
- Monitor and Output: The source is sent both to the monitoring device and to the normal output.
For ordinary loop audio that viewers should hear but that you do not need to hear again through OBS, use Monitor Off. Use Monitor Only only when the source is for your private listening, not the audience mix.
Set up the loop stream without duplicate audio
- Map the audio sources. Identify the loop media source, microphone, desktop audio, capture-card audio, browser or player return, and any virtual cable or mixer. Decide which should reach viewers and which you need to hear locally.
- Remove duplicate capture paths. Open Settings > Audio and check the global devices against sources in the scene. If the same physical device is already added with an Audio Input/Output Capture source, disable that device in global audio settings, or remove the scene-level capture. Use only one path for that device.
- Select the monitoring device. In OBS audio settings, choose the headphones or other playback device you intend to use for monitoring. Avoid an output device that OBS also captures into the program mix.
- Choose monitoring per source. Open Advanced Audio Properties from the audio mixer. Leave monitoring off for loop audio that only needs to reach viewers. Choose Monitor Only for a source you need to hear privately but do not want in the stream. Choose Monitor and Output only when both destinations are intended and the monitor output cannot be captured again.
- Keep the YouTube return out of the program mix. Leave local YouTube playback muted or closed on the streaming computer unless it is deliberately part of the production. To check the public stream, use a separate device or ensure its playback is not captured into OBS.
- Verify the routing before leaving the stream unattended. Confirm the relevant mixer meters move, make a brief recording or private test, and check that the intended audio reaches the audience once. OBS’s mixer guide explains that meters indicate peak level; red means the level is close to clipping.
Diagnose the symptom, not just the sound
| What you notice | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| You hear a source twice | The same device may be captured globally and as a scene source, or a monitored output may be captured again. | Compare Settings > Audio with scene-level Audio Input/Output Capture sources. Check the selected monitoring device and Advanced Audio Properties. |
| You hear audio locally, but viewers do not | The source may be set to Monitor Only, which mutes it from stream and recording output. | Change it to Monitor and Output if the audience should hear it, or Monitor Off if it should go to the audience without local monitoring. |
| The loop audio repeats with a delay | YouTube playback may be returning to the computer and re-entering OBS through a captured device. | Mute or close local playback, or listen from a separate device that is not captured in OBS. |
| Echo remains when speakers are on | A microphone may be picking up sound acoustically from room speakers. | Try headphones to avoid that acoustic path. Headphones do not fix duplicate digital capture. |
| A meter does not move, or the final recording lacks audio | The source may not be reaching the intended OBS path, or its output may be muted by the monitoring mode. | Check the source assignment, mixer meter, and monitoring mode, then make a brief test recording. |
What OBS documents about echo
The OBS Project’s Audio Sources guide, dated 2022-01-11, warns: “Audio Input/Output Capture source can cause an echo effect if you have the same device selected in Settings -> Audio.” It advises disabling the global device when adding devices directly to scenes. This is a documented duplicate-capture risk; treating a YouTube playback return as another possible duplicate path is an application of that guidance, not a YouTube-specific OBS rule.

OBS’s Audio Mixer Guide, dated 2026-04-03, explains that the monitor button plays a source through the monitoring device configured in settings. Community troubleshooting also points to checking that device and Advanced Audio Properties when the same sound is heard twice. Menus and signal behavior can differ across OBS releases, operating systems, drivers, virtual mixers, and capture hardware.
