Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor an OBS loop, start with H.264, 720p at 30 fps, and a 3 Mbps video bitrate if you are unsure what your connection can sustain. YouTube lists 3 Mbps as the minimum and 8 Mbps as the recommended H.264 bitrate for 720p30. At 1080p30, its figures are 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. These are encoder targets—not guarantees that an Indian broadband connection or route to YouTube can hold them for a long stream.
Use CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and AAC audio; then test the actual computer and connection you will stream from. If OBS reports network-dropped frames or YouTube flags stream-health problems, reduce the bitrate and test again.

Choose the target before setting OBS
YouTube’s bitrate guidance depends on the ingestion codec, resolution, and frame rate. Its current table does not provide an India-specific broadband recommendation, and the page does not show a publication year. Treat each number below as YouTube’s encoder guidance, not a promise about a particular ISP, city, plan, or household.
| Codec | Video format | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| H.264 | 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 720p30 | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 1080p30 | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
Use the row for the codec you actually configure. For a straightforward compatibility-oriented OBS setup, H.264 over RTMPS is a sensible baseline. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, or AV1; it recommends RTMPS because it encrypts delivery to Google’s servers. A loop does not have a separate bitrate table. Low-motion footage may look acceptable at a lower rate, but that is a quality trade-off to test, not a YouTube guarantee.

Estimate a bitrate your connection can sustain
Run an upload-speed test on the same computer and connection you will use for streaming. If practical, test more than once and during the usual household or workplace network load. Advertised download speed is not upload capacity, and one speed-test result cannot predict every congestion burst or the full route to YouTube’s ingestion server.
OBS’s dropped-frame guidance offers 75% of total upload speed as a starting heuristic. It is not a validated stability rule for every Indian broadband connection. Leave capacity for audio, normal network variation, and other devices rather than setting the video bitrate equal to the speed-test result.

- Connects a USB 3.0 device (computer/laptop) to a router, modem, or network switch to deliver Gigabit Ethernet to your network connection. Does not support Smart TV or gaming consoles (e.g.Nintendo Switch).
- Supported features include Wake-on-LAN function, Green Ethernet & IEEE 802.3az-2010 (Energy Efficient Ethernet)
- Supports IPv4/IPv6 pack Checksum Offload Engine (COE) to reduce Cental Processing Unit (CPU) loading
- Compatible with Windows 8.1 or higher, Mac OS
- Select resolution and frame rate. Choose a supported YouTube format that suits the loop and your available upload. If sustained upload is uncertain, begin at 720p30 rather than aiming immediately for 1080p60.
- Choose the matching codec row. For H.264 at 720p30, 3 Mbps is YouTube’s minimum; 8 Mbps is its recommendation. A minimum may be a useful cautious test target, but it is not the recommended quality target.
- Set video bitrate below what the connection can reliably carry. Do not allocate all measured upload capacity to video. Use the test result as an estimate, then validate it in a real stream.
- Test representative content. Include audio and movement similar to the actual loop, and let the test run long enough to expose problems that a brief check might miss.
- Watch both OBS and YouTube. Check OBS’s dropped frames and the stream-health messages in YouTube Live Control Room. Raise the bitrate only if the connection remains stable and the picture needs more quality.
Set the OBS output and YouTube connection
OBS labels can vary by version and selected encoder, so use the equivalent control if a label differs. The essential settings for a standard SDR loop are:
Recommended Free Tools
- Service/server: Select YouTube and use its RTMPS option where available.
- Video encoder: H.264 for the compatibility-oriented baseline described here.
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Bitrate: Enter the target selected from YouTube’s H.264 table, bounded by stable upload capacity.
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds. YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Audio: AAC is a compatible choice for RTMP/RTMPS; YouTube lists 128 Kbps for stereo audio in its advanced guidance.
YouTube’s advanced recommendations also include square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames and one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709 for SDR, and 8-bit SDR. Encoder-specific OBS controls vary, so do not force a setting that your chosen encoder does not expose or support. For a typical SDR loop, the core bitrate, CBR, keyframe, and audio choices above are the practical starting point.

Interpret dropped frames and stream-health warnings
OBS describes network-dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the selected bitrate. Lower the bitrate first, then repeat the representative test. If the reduced target is stable, the earlier setting exceeded what the route could sustain under those conditions.
- Network-dropped frames or intermittent disconnects: Lower the video bitrate and test again. If available, try a different YouTube server or route.
- Unstable Wi-Fi: Test over Ethernet where practical. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi may be unstable. Ethernet can improve the local link but cannot increase the ISP’s upload service or fix upstream congestion.
- Problems continue after lowering bitrate: Check VPNs, security software, network-optimization utilities, network drivers, the router or modem, and possible route congestion—one change at a time. Contact your ISP if local checks do not resolve the issue.
- Considering OBS dynamic bitrate: OBS documents a beta option that lowers bitrate when the connection cannot keep up. It may reduce interruptions, but it lowers image quality and does not fix the underlying network problem.
For a long-running loop, stability over the full run matters more than briefly reaching a high setting. YouTube recommends testing before going live with audio and movement similar to the real stream, then monitoring stream health. Its guidance does not establish a specific bitrate for an Indian ISP or a low-motion loop.
