For a standard YouTube Live stream sent over RTMP or RTMPS, target a 2-second keyframe interval and do not exceed 4 seconds. With a frame-count-based FFmpeg GOP setting, use -g 60 at 30 fps or -g 120 at 60 fps. Request a closed GOP; YouTube does not support open GOPs.
What GOP size should you use?
YouTube labels this setting “Keyframe frequency”; FFmpeg encoders commonly expose GOP size as a number of frames. For the usual RTMP/RTMPS workflow, YouTube Help recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Aim for 2 seconds rather than treating the maximum as the target. Calculate from the output frame rate, not the source file’s nominal rate if your encode changes it. The calculation is interval in seconds × encoded frames per second. FFmpeg documents GOP-size options for relevant encoders, but option availability and behavior can vary by encoder and build; see the FFmpeg codecs documentation.

Set the GOP size and request a closed GOP
For a fixed 30 fps H.264 encode using libx264, these options illustrate a 2-second GOP and closed-GOP request:
ffmpeg -i INPUT -c:v libx264 -r 30 -g 60 -flags +cgop -c:a aac OUTPUTThis is only a GOP-related command fragment, not a complete YouTube publishing command. Replace INPUT and OUTPUT as appropriate, and supply the input handling, video bitrate or rate control, audio settings, and RTMPS ingestion destination needed for your stream. Check the selected encoder’s help for supported options and confirm the resulting stream in a test.

YouTube’s Live API health documentation explicitly identifies open GOP as unsupported and asks for closed-GOP configuration. FFmpeg documents cgop as the closed-GOP flag; its availability and behavior depend on the encoder and build. Do not assume that the same option works identically with every codec wrapper. Keep the protocol-specific limits straight
Use the guidance for the ingestion method you actually configured. For standard RTMP/RTMPS, follow YouTube Help’s 2-second recommendation and 4-second maximum. The DASH-specific guide says GOP size should be about 2 seconds and less than 8 seconds; that limit belongs to DASH and is not a replacement for the RTMP/RTMPS guidance. The Live API health page also reports problems for very short GOPs and mismatched keyframe frequencies between primary and backup feeds. Its diagnostic messages are useful clues, not a reason to set an RTMP/RTMPS GOP longer than YouTube Help’s stated ceiling.
Test the stream and read its health
- Confirm the output frame rate. Identify the frame rate being encoded and use it in the seconds-to-frames calculation.
- Check encoder support. Consult the selected encoder’s FFmpeg help or documentation for GOP-size and closed-GOP controls. Wrappers expose different private options.
- Start a test stream. Check YouTube Live stream health for long or very short GOPs, open-GOP warnings, or a primary/backup keyframe mismatch. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring health during the event.
- Investigate ingestion errors too. YouTube cautions that ingestion errors can cause reported GOP sizes to be incorrect, so a health diagnostic may not reflect only the configured GOP value.
Troubleshooting GOP problems
- Keyframe interval is reported as too long: Recalculate the frame count using the actual output frame rate and check that the encoder is applying the intended GOP setting. For RTMP/RTMPS, keep the interval at or below 4 seconds and target 2 seconds.
- YouTube reports an open GOP: Request closed-GOP behavior using a control supported by your chosen encoder, then test again. FFmpeg option behavior is encoder-dependent.
- Health reports an unusually short GOP: Check whether the configured frame count or encoder behavior is producing more frequent keyframes than intended. YouTube’s health diagnostics warn that very small GOPs can reduce image quality.
- Primary and backup feeds disagree: Match their keyframe frequencies and verify the output frame rates and encoder settings on both feeds.
- The reported GOP seems inconsistent with your settings: Check stream health for ingestion errors before concluding that the encoder ignored the setting; YouTube notes that ingestion errors can make reported GOP sizes inaccurate.
