For a YouTube Live stream, set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. In FFmpeg, that means a GOP of 60 frames at 30 fps or 120 frames at 60 fps. YouTube recommends two seconds, says not to exceed four, and requires a closed GOP for optimal transcoding.
Convert YouTube’s two-second target to frames
GOP length is commonly set as a number of frames, while YouTube’s recommendation is expressed as a duration. Multiply the stream’s actual frame rate by two:

The two-second recommendation and four-second ceiling appear in YouTube’s live encoder settings. Its live-stream error guidance also relates the interval to frame rate and states that YouTube’s pipeline requires a closed GOP for optimal transcoding.

Set a two-second, closed GOP with FFmpeg
H.264 at 30 fps
For an input that you are encoding with libx264, this fragment sets a 60-frame GOP, constrains the minimum interval, disables scene-cut keyframes for more regular spacing, and requests closed-GOP behavior:

Use 120 in both GOP-length options to preserve the same two-second interval:

-c:a aac OUTPUTThese are encoder fragments, not complete YouTube streaming commands. Add the output protocol and destination, stream URL and key, bitrate, frame rate, and other settings appropriate to your deployment. FFmpeg documents GOP sizing and passing options to libx264 in its documentation. Option availability and behavior can depend on the encoder selected and the FFmpeg build, so check local encoder help and verify the emitted stream.

Check the rest of the live-encoding setup
GOP length does not set bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or how long a broadcast stays live. YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS as ingest protocols, accepts H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1, supports up to 60 fps, and recommends CBR in its encoder settings. Choose those settings for the actual video and encoder; do not treat a two-second GOP as a substitute for configuring them.

Verify the GOP and troubleshoot common problems
- Confirm the output frame rate. Calculate the GOP from the frame rate the encoder actually emits, not merely the source file’s nominal frame rate. If the output frame rate changes, recompute the frame count.
- Check encoder output and logs. Confirm that the chosen encoder accepts the GOP and closed-GOP options. If an option is rejected or ignored, consult the local FFmpeg and encoder help for that build.
- Review YouTube Live Control Room. If YouTube reports keyframe-interval or GOP errors, check the emitted interval against the two-second target and four-second ceiling, then confirm closed-GOP behavior.
- Keep runtime failures separate from GOP settings. A dropped stream or a process that stops after running for a while is an uptime and recovery issue, not something a GOP length fixes. A long-running FFmpeg deployment needs an always-on host and monitoring; the cited guidance does not establish one universal reconnect or restart command for every setup.
