How to Set Google as Your Search Engine in Windows 11

Change browser searches from Bing to Google in Windows 11. Follow the Edge or Chrome steps, and set Chrome as the default browser separately if you want links to open there.

To switch browser searches from Bing to Google in Windows 11, change the search-engine setting in the browser you use. Edge and Chrome each have their own setting; Windows does not provide one universal web-search-engine switch. If you also want links to open in Chrome, set Chrome as the default browser separately in Windows.

First, know which setting you need

A search engine handles searches you enter in a browser. A default browser is the app Windows opens when you follow a web link. Choosing Google as a browser’s search engine does not make that browser the Windows default, and setting Chrome as the default browser does not by itself choose Google for searches.

Use the instructions for the browser where Bing appears: Edge or Chrome. These steps change browser searches; they do not establish that Windows Search or taskbar web results will use Google.

Change Bing to Google in Microsoft Edge

  1. Open Edge and search for something from the address bar using Google. This can add Google to the available search-engine choices if it is not listed yet.

  2. Open Settings and more > Settings.

  3. Select Privacy, search, and services, then Search and connected services > Address bar and search.

  4. Under Search engine used in the address bar, choose Google.

Microsoft documents this setting for Edge, including on Windows 11: Change your default search engine in Microsoft Edge. Browser labels or menu placement can vary between versions, so follow the closest matching labels shown in your Edge settings.

Make new-tab searches use Google too

Edge’s new-tab page may use a separate search box rather than the address bar. If typing into that box still searches Bing, return to Address bar and search and set Search on new tabs uses search box or address bar to Address bar. Google’s instructions for choosing Google in Edge include this additional option: Make Google your default search engine.

Change Bing to Google in Google Chrome

  1. Open Chrome and select Settings.

  2. Select Search engine.

  3. Choose Google as the search engine used for the address bar.

To inspect available engines or site-search shortcuts, go to Search engine > Manage search engines and site search. Google’s Chrome instructions cover the setting and note that an administrator may manage it on some devices: Set your default search engine.

Set Chrome as the Windows 11 default browser, if needed

Do this only if you want web links from other apps to open in Chrome. This Windows setting is independent of Chrome’s search-engine choice.
