Yes—Amtrak offers free Wi-Fi on select trains and at select stations, but not on every service or every segment. Check Amtrak’s current Wi-Fi route list for your specific train. Plan on basic browsing, not reliable streaming or large downloads.
Which Amtrak trains have Wi-Fi?
Amtrak lists Wi-Fi on services including Acela, Northeast Regional, Pacific Surfliner and many state-supported and long-distance routes. Some cross-border segments are excluded, and Wi-Fi is also available at select stations. Because routes and equipment can change, verify your service on Amtrak’s Wi-Fi page rather than assuming every train has a connection.

Amtrak’s FY2025 Grant and Legislative Request says more than 90% of its passengers can connect to the Internet through free onboard Wi-Fi. The same document acknowledges that Wi-Fi remains unavailable on certain routes and that connection speed, reliability and bandwidth are limited (Amtrak FY2025 Grant and Legislative Request).
What can you do with Amtrak Wi-Fi?
Amtrak describes the service as suitable for general browsing, but says it does not support high-bandwidth activities such as streaming music or video and downloading large files. Save films, music, documents and other large files to your device before boarding if you need them during the trip.

The network relies on bandwidth from cellular carriers with towers along Amtrak routes. As Amtrak explains, “Our onboard Wi-Fi network relies on bandwidth provided by cellular carriers who have towers along our routes.” Available bandwidth can be limited, and terrain and other factors outside Amtrak’s control can affect speed and reliability. Amtrak does not publish a universal speed guarantee, so don’t count on a consistent connection for time-sensitive work.

Accept the terms on the welcome screen to connect.
On Capitol Corridor and Gold Runner, Amtrak says to select YourTrainWiFi instead. If the welcome screen does not appear, try refreshing the browser after joining the network.

Is Amtrak Wi-Fi secure, and can you use a VPN?
Amtrak describes its onboard Wi-Fi as a public network that is not inherently secure and has no secure passcode. The current guidance allows VPN traffic on trains that offer Wi-Fi, but a VPN does not make public Wi-Fi invulnerable. Use security measures appropriate for your activity, and avoid treating the onboard network as a private connection.

If you expect to charge several devices, Amtrak’s packing guidance suggests a multi-USB travel adapter as a charging convenience. It does not improve Wi-Fi or cellular reception (Amtrak packing list).
