But an alert usually tells you that a chosen price condition has been met—it does not necessarily predict that prices are about to rise. Price trends and station promotions are separate features.
Choose a service that covers your location
Fuel-price data and alert features vary by jurisdiction, so start with a government or reputable local fuel service. Check that it lists stations you use, supports your fuel grade and explains how current prices are collected. The ACCC’s 2024 guide notes that fuel apps and websites differ in their coverage: ACCC guide to fuel apps and websites.

Before relying on an alert, identify what kind of notification the service offers:
- Price-threshold alert: Notifies you when a station or nearby price reaches a price condition you selected. It reports a price condition, not necessarily an expected increase.
- Price-cycle or trend information: Shows price movements or estimates cheaper days, which may help you plan but cannot guarantee when prices will change.
- Promotional deal: Offers a station-specific discount or reward with its own activation and redemption rules. It is not a general warning that prices are about to rise.
Set up a price-threshold notification
- Install or open the official local service. Use the government or regulator service for your area when one is available; otherwise check an app’s geographic coverage and price-data source.
- Select your fuel grade. Make sure the selected grade matches the fuel your vehicle uses.
- Save a station or area, if supported. Choose a regular station, or use a home or work location to find nearby options. Check that the app has location permission if it needs that to show nearby stations.
- Choose the alert condition. In the app’s current controls, select a target price, favourite-station alert or other available threshold. Menu labels and options vary, so follow the instructions in the app rather than assuming every service uses the same path.
- Allow notifications in both places. Enable alerts in the app and in your phone’s operating-system notification settings. If nearby results or live prices are not updating, check that location and internet access are available to the service.
- Review your settings periodically. Adjust saved stations and price targets when your routine or local prices change.
Use FuelCheck in NSW or the ACT
For drivers in New South Wales or the Australian Capital Territory, the NSW Government’s FuelCheck is one concrete option. The service covers NSW and ACT, provides price alerts for a preferred price at a favourite station or a cheaper nearby station, and includes trip planning and “Trends” information about local movements and cheaper days. FuelCheck needs an internet connection for the most up-to-date prices and approximate location access to find nearby stations. Its service information is at FuelCheck About. The NSW Government said in a release dated 20 March 2026 that FuelCheck provides prices from around 2,400 service stations across NSW; that is a coverage figure, not a measure of savings or success in filling up before a rise: NSW Government release. Check the current app for its available alert controls, since features can change.
Check other services without mistaking their features
Western Australia: check FuelWatch directly
The ACCC’s 2024 report discusses FuelWatch and historical weekly alerts connected to Perth’s price cycle. That dated description does not establish which notification controls are available now. Check FuelWatch directly for its current features before setting expectations.

Waze: useful for station lookup, not an established price-rise alert
Waze can help locate and compare stations, set a preferred fuel type and brand, and sort results by price, distance or brand. Its official documentation does not establish push notifications for fuel-price changes. Waze also says business information may come from users, Google and partners, and that it does not verify third-party data or guarantee its accuracy or currency. Use it as a supplementary lookup and check how recently a listed price was updated: Waze fuel prices help.

GasBuddy: station promotions, not a general price forecast
GasBuddy’s app listing describes availability in the United States and Canada, and its prices rely on community reports. Its current help center calls station offers “Flash Deals (formerly Deal Alerts).” To use one, find a deal banner on the Find Gas screen, sign in, select a station and activate the offer before fueling. The documented offer window is four hours after activation. Depending on membership and payment method, claiming a reward or discount may require uploading a paper receipt; GasBuddy says receipt processing can take 1–10 days. A notification is only useful if it refers to the right station, grade and type of offer. Before driving to fill up, confirm the listed price and its recency in the app or service, especially when the data comes from community members or third parties. Compare the likely saving with the extra distance; a lower displayed price may not make a special trip worthwhile.

No independently measured success rate for filling up before a price rise is established in the cited material. Treat threshold alerts as notifications about selected prices and trend views as planning information—not as a guarantee of a future increase or a promised saving.
