For PC gaming on an OLED monitor, first select a suitable gaming preset and confirm Windows is outputting the refresh rate you expect. Enable HDR for supported HDR games, turn on VRR if both the monitor and graphics card support it, and leave the monitor’s OLED-care protections enabled. There is no universal brightness, contrast, or shadow-control setting that suits every OLED display.
1. Confirm the refresh rate Windows is using
A high refresh rate on the monitor’s spec sheet is only its capability; your PC may be sending a lower rate. In Windows, open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and select a supported refresh rate. LG’s refresh-rate guidance also recommends checking the monitor’s signal information. The options available can depend on the monitor, connection, graphics capability, and other system conditions.

If the rate you want is missing, check the exact monitor and GPU specifications before replacing a cable. The connection standard required depends on the display, GPU, resolution, and target refresh rate; LG lists DisplayPort 1.4 or HDMI 2.0 or higher as possible requirements for some models, not as a universal rule.

Start with the monitor’s gaming preset or a user-configurable game mode, then adjust only what you need. Presets can change the image for different game styles, while a user mode may let you tune individual controls. For example, LG describes FPS1, FPS2, and RTS as presets and Gamer modes as editable; those names and behaviors are specific to LG displays. Some LG modes also require HDR to be enabled in Windows, so check your model’s instructions rather than assuming the same menu behavior across brands. See LG’s game-mode guidance.

3. Use HDR for supported HDR games and content
Turn on HDR in Windows and the monitor when you are playing HDR content and your setup supports it. HDR is not automatically the best setting for every desktop or game: SDR content and monitor implementations can behave differently, and some presets interact with Windows HDR. If HDR looks incorrect, verify Windows’ HDR setting and consult the monitor manual. LG’s manual warns that HDR content may not display correctly depending on Windows settings.
4. Enable VRR if your setup supports it
Variable refresh rate (VRR) can reduce tearing or stuttering by synchronizing the display’s refresh behavior with the graphics card. Depending on the equipment, the feature may be labelled Adaptive-Sync, FreeSync, or G-SYNC. Confirm that both your monitor and graphics card support the mode you intend to use, then follow the monitor manual’s instructions for its own menu and connection requirements. LG’s owner’s manual describes model-specific VRR instructions.

5. Adjust shadow visibility without washing out blacks
Controls such as Black Stabilizer can make details in dark scenes easier to see, but raising shadow visibility may also make blacks look washed out or change the intended image. There is no established numeric setting that works across PC OLED monitors. If you want more visibility, adjust the control modestly while viewing a representative game scene; return it to default if dark areas lose the black level you prefer.

6. Keep OLED-care features enabled
OLED monitors may include screen-saving features such as pixel shift or screen movement, logo dimming, and other protections. ASUS explains that prolonged static, high-contrast images can contribute to image persistence or burn-in and documents protections intended to reduce risk. Feature names and availability vary by manufacturer and model, so keep the available protections enabled unless your monitor’s manual gives a specific reason not to. See ASUS’s OLED protection guidance and monitor manual.

7. Let pixel cleaning finish
Follow the monitor’s reminder and manual for when to run a pixel-cleaning cycle, and do not interrupt it when the manufacturer says it is in progress. On the ASUS monitors covered by its guidance, the process takes approximately six minutes, can run when the screen turns off, and should not be interrupted by unplugging the display. That timing and behavior are specific to the covered ASUS models, not a general OLED rule. See ASUS’s pixel-cleaning guidance and model manual.

Brightness, contrast, color temperature, HDR luminance, sharpening, and shadow-control values depend on the monitor, firmware, game, PC, and viewing preference. Use the display’s intended preset as a starting point and make changes in the context where you will use them. Avoid copying a numeric preset unless it is documented for your exact model and use case.
