The server-side switch is disable3rdPerson in serverDZ.cfg. Set it to 0 for a server where players may use either first- or third-person view, or set it to 1 for a first-person-only server. Save the file, restart the server, reconnect, and verify the perspective marker in the server browser. If the change does nothing, you probably edited a copy that is not the file loaded by the server’s -config startup parameter.

The setting that controls perspective
DayZ reads the perspective rule when the dedicated server starts. In the active serverDZ.cfg, find or add the disable3rdPerson line. The value is a binary toggle:

What players can do |
|---|---|---|
| Mixed perspective | disable3rdPerson = 0; |
Use first person or third person and switch between them during play. |
| First-person only | disable3rdPerson = 1; |
Remain in first person; third-person view is unavailable on that server. |
The parameter name is easy to misread: a value of 1 disables third person, while 0 leaves third person enabled. The setting is independent of crosshair and night-lighting options, so changing those is unnecessary unless they are part of the ruleset you want.
What you need before editing
You need administrator access to the machine or hosting panel that runs the DayZ server. A client-side game setting cannot override the server rule. Prepare the following:
#1 Best Overall
- Use any means necessary to survive a hostile open world for as long as possible.
- Explore the authentic open world of Chernarus, featuring 230 square kilometers of hand-crafted terrain based on real-life locations.
- Become immersed in a tense, emotional experience driven by the emergent interactions of 60 players on a single server, each one fighting for survival.
- Experience a wide variety of complex survival mechanics, from hunting and crafting, through to sophisticated injury simulation and transferable diseases.
- Survive against environmental dangers, including the infected, dynamic weather, and animal predators.
- Access to the server’s configuration files, either through the operating system or a host control panel.
- The name and path of the configuration file actually loaded at launch.
- Permission to stop and restart the server.
- A backup of the current configuration so you can restore other settings if a mistake is made.
Dedicated servers can have several configuration copies—for example, one in a template directory and another in the live instance directory. Editing an unused copy produces no visible change. The launch command’s -config parameter identifies the file DayZ reads, so establish that path before changing anything.
Set the perspective on a dedicated server
1. Stop the server or schedule a maintenance window
Changing a text file while the process is running does not make the running instance reread it. Stop the server using your service manager or launch script, or announce a short restart if you manage a public server. A clean stop also reduces the chance that the panel or service will write the old file back over your edit.
2. Identify the file selected by -config
Inspect the command line, batch file, shell script, or service definition used to launch DayZ. Look for an argument such as -config=serverDZ.cfg or a full path ending in serverDZ.cfg. Open that exact file. If the argument points to a relative path, resolve it from the working directory used by the service, not necessarily the folder you opened in a file browser.

3. Make a backup
Copy the active file and give the copy a clear name, such as serverDZ.cfg.before-perspective-change. Keep the original formatting. This lets you recover if an editor changes line endings or if another configuration value is accidentally removed.
4. Edit disable3rdPerson
Use a plain-text editor. Replace the existing value with the line for the policy you want, preserving the spelling, equals sign, spaces, and semicolon:
// Players may switch between first and third person
disable3rdPerson = 0;
For a first-person-only ruleset, use:
// Third person is disabled
disable3rdPerson = 1;
Do not put the line inside a comment. A line beginning with // is ignored, and a missing semicolon or misspelled parameter can leave the server using its previous or default behavior.

5. Save without changing the file type
Save the file as plain text with the same filename and extension. Avoid an editor that silently appends .txt, changes quotation marks, or converts the configuration into a rich-text document. If the file already contains a disable3rdPerson line, edit that line instead of adding a second copy; duplicate entries make it unclear which value the parser will honor.
6. Start the server and reconnect
Start the server with the same launch command, including the -config argument. Wait until it is fully online, then disconnect and reconnect from the client. The restart is required because the perspective option is read during server initialization.
Change the setting on a rented server
Most game-server providers expose serverDZ.cfg through a web control panel rather than giving you the host filesystem. The labels differ, but the workflow is consistent:

- Open the area labelled something like Configuration Files, Config Editor, or File Manager.
- Select the configuration associated with the live instance—not a sample, backup, or profile file.
- Find
disable3rdPersonand choose0for mixed perspective or1for first-person-only play. - Save or apply the change, then use the panel’s restart control.
- Reconnect after the server reports that it is online and check its browser marker.
Some panels expose a drop-down instead of the raw line. If the control says “Allow third person,” an enabled control corresponds to disable3rdPerson = 0;; a disabled control corresponds to disable3rdPerson = 1;. Confirm the generated file if the panel offers a raw-view option. Editing a local copy on your own computer will not affect a rented server unless the provider explicitly uploads that file.

How players switch perspective
On a server that permits both views, the default DayZ control for switching between first and third person is Enter. The key changes the local camera perspective; it does not change the server policy. If the server is configured as first-person-only, pressing Enter cannot unlock third person because the server rejects that view.

Tell players which rule applies in the server name, welcome message, Discord announcement, or community rules. This prevents a new player from interpreting the missing camera option as a client fault. The browser also communicates the rule: DayZ documentation describes a person icon beside servers that allow third person, while first-person-only servers do not display that icon. Some hosting panels describe the same information as a perspective tag.

First-person-only versus mixed-perspective servers
| Decision point | First-person only | Mixed perspective |
|---|---|---|
| Server value | disable3rdPerson = 1; |
disable3rdPerson = 0; |
| Third-person peeking around cover | Not available. | Available whenever the player selects third person. |
| Can players switch views? | No. Enter cannot override the server rule. | Yes. Enter switches between the two views by default. |
| Browser indication | No third-person person icon. | Person icon or equivalent perspective tag. |
| Other immersion settings | Crosshair and lighting remain whatever their own parameters specify. | Crosshair and lighting remain whatever their own parameters specify. |
The choice is a ruleset decision rather than a performance setting. First-person-only play removes the ability to look over a wall or around a corner without exposing the character, while mixed servers give every player that option. Neither value automatically changes the crosshair or night-lighting configuration.
Designing a consistent ruleset
When first-person-only makes sense
- You want line-of-sight to depend on the character’s actual position rather than an offset camera.
- Your community advertises an immersion-focused or competitive first-person environment.
- You want the browser listing itself to communicate that third-person peeking is not part of the rules.
When mixed perspective makes sense
- You want the familiar default experience for players who use both cameras.
- Your community accepts third-person scouting and understands that every connected player has the same option.
- You do not want to manage separate first-person and third-person server identities.
If you also intend to remove the crosshair or alter night visibility, treat those as separate configuration decisions. The perspective toggle does not cascade into disableCrosshair, lightingConfig, or any other server parameter.
Troubleshooting when the change does not work
The server still allows third person after setting the value to 1
- Verify that the live launch command points to the file you edited. Check the exact
-configpath and working directory. - Open the file again and confirm the active line is exactly
disable3rdPerson = 1;, not commented out and not duplicated elsewhere in the same file. - Confirm the server was fully stopped and restarted after saving. A player reconnect alone does not reload server configuration.
- On a hosted server, reopen the provider’s editor after restarting. If it shows
0again, the panel may not have saved the change or may be regenerating the file from another template.
Players cannot switch to third person on a mixed server
- Check the browser listing for the third-person person icon or perspective tag. Its absence suggests that the server is still first-person-only.
- Confirm the active file contains
disable3rdPerson = 0;and that the server has been restarted since the edit. - Have the player reconnect and press the default Enter key. If the key has been changed in the player’s controls, use that client’s assigned perspective-switch key.
The configuration editor reports a syntax error
Restore the backup, then re-enter only the parameter change. The accepted form uses the exact parameter name, a numeric value of 0 or 1, and a terminating semicolon. Remove smart quotes, trailing explanatory text on the same line, and accidental markup from a rich-text editor.
The browser marker does not match the file
First confirm that the server has completed its restart and that you are viewing the correct server entry. Then verify the -config target and the provider panel’s saved value. The marker is useful confirmation, but it cannot correct an edit made to an inactive configuration copy.
Verification checklist for administrators
- Policy chosen: mixed perspective or first-person only is documented for the community.
- Correct file: the edit was made in the file named by the startup
-configparameter. - Exact syntax: the parameter name, numeric value, and semicolon are present.
- Safe change: a pre-edit backup exists and unrelated parameters were left untouched.
- Restart completed: the process was stopped and started, not merely reloaded in the client.
- Player test: a connected player confirms the expected camera behavior.
- Browser confirmation: the third-person icon or perspective tag matches the advertised ruleset.
Once those checks pass, the server’s perspective policy is deterministic: the value in the active serverDZ.cfg governs what every player can select, and the browser indicator gives prospective players a quick way to recognize the rule before joining.
