How to Set Firewall Rules for an IoT VLAN Without Breaking Device Access

A practical sequence for isolating IoT devices on a VLAN while preserving the specific network services, controller connections, and discovery they need.

To isolate an IoT VLAN without losing control of its devices, block unnecessary traffic between IoT and trusted networks, then allow only the specific controller, management, and discovery paths the devices require. First confirm where traffic is routed and which side initiates each connection; a gateway firewall, switch ACL, and Wi-Fi client isolation control different traffic.

Understand what the firewall controls

A VLAN separates devices into a logical network, but the gateway or router controls traffic that has to cross between VLANs. Ubiquiti describes firewall rules as the standard way to control traffic between VLANs and between a VLAN and the internet in its UniFi firewall documentation. That guidance describes UniFi; rule names, evaluation order, and connection-state behavior differ across platforms.

Traffic that stays within the same VLAN may not pass through the gateway at all. If IoT devices must also be prevented from reaching one another, check whether your switch supports suitable ACLs or whether your access point offers Wi-Fi client isolation. These controls have different scopes, and isolation can break device-to-device functions that rely on local connections.

Inventory device and controller dependencies

Before adding deny rules, document what each device needs to communicate with. A camera, smart speaker, or sensor may use a different controller, destination, protocol, and port; there is no single port list that applies to all IoT equipment.

NETGEAR 8-Port Gigabit Ethernet Easy Smart Managed Network Switch (GS308E)
  • PLUG-AND-PLAY GIGABIT MANAGED SWITCH: 8 x 1Gbps auto-negotiating ports work the moment you plug in — full-gigabit speed over Cat5e/Cat6 cabling.
  • MANAGED, WITHOUT THE COMPLEXITY: Easy Smart web GUI on Windows, Mac or Linux — no app or Windows-only utility, unlike many competing switches.
  • SEGMENT & PRIORITIZE TRAFFIC: Up to 64 VLANs, QoS, IGMP snooping and port mirroring keep voice, video and data fast, secure and organized.
  • BUILT-IN PROTECTION: Auto DoS prevention, loop detection, broadcast storm control and cable test keep your network stable and easy to troubleshoot.
  • RELIABLE 24/7 BACKBONE: Rugged fanless metal housing runs cool and silent at 0 dBA — the managed switch trusted in homes, offices and small business.
  • Record the device, its hub or controller, and any management host that needs access.
  • Identify which endpoint initiates each connection. A controller connecting to a device is a different flow from a device calling back to a controller.
  • Check the device and controller vendor documentation for required protocols and ports rather than guessing.
  • Determine whether the controller needs cross-VLAN discovery, such as mDNS, or already knows the device address.
  • Note whether devices need local access to each other, internet access, or neither.

Create the IoT network and assign devices

  1. On the routing device, create the IoT virtual network. Set a VLAN ID and a subnet that does not overlap your other networks. If a third-party gateway routes your VLANs, configure the VLAN and subnet there; that is also where its inter-VLAN firewall rules generally belong. UniFi’s virtual network setup guidance describes creating a network on supported UniFi gateways.
  2. Configure DHCP and DNS for that network. Clients need suitable network settings, including an address, subnet mask, default gateway, and DNS server. Ubiquiti says DHCP is enabled per virtual network by default on its gateways and documents the parameters it supplies in its DHCP server documentation. If DHCP or DNS runs elsewhere, ensure the necessary service path is available.
  3. Map devices to the VLAN. Assign the IoT wireless network’s SSID to the VLAN, or set the appropriate VLAN on wired switch ports. Check the gateway, switch, and access point documentation for the supported configuration and labels.
  4. Check a client’s basic configuration. Confirm it receives an address, gateway, and DNS settings for the IoT subnet before troubleshooting firewall exceptions.

Apply isolation, then add narrow exceptions

Use the gateway firewall or its network-isolation feature to restrict routed access between the IoT VLAN and trusted networks. Start with the separation you want, then add only the paths required for actual use. Be explicit about source, destination, protocol, and direction; avoid broad permits such as allowing all IoT traffic to the trusted LAN.

For each exception, match the direction to the connection initiator. If the controller opens a session to a device, allow that path from the controller’s network to the device. If the device must initiate a connection to a controller or service, allow that specific device-to-service path instead. Many firewalls track connections and allow return traffic for an established session, but state handling varies by product; use the gateway’s documented behavior rather than assuming another vendor works like UniFi.

On UniFi switch ACLs, Ubiquiti advises placing specific allow rules before more general block-all rules. This ordering guidance applies to the relevant UniFi ACL behavior, not automatically to every firewall. Ubiquiti also notes that switch ACL availability varies by model, and that switch ACLs are unavailable on switch ports of UniFi gateways and in-wall access points; check the current UniFi ACL documentation for supported hardware and behavior.

Treat discovery separately from access

A controller may find devices using multicast DNS (mDNS) or another discovery mechanism. If discovery fails across VLANs, first confirm which mechanism the product actually uses. On supported UniFi gateways, mDNS forwarding can be enabled between selected networks, with service-type restrictions where appropriate; see Ubiquiti’s mDNS documentation.

  • REGIONAL COMPATIBILITY: Made for use in U.S. & CA only

Discovery is not the same as permission to operate a device. An mDNS relay can make a service visible across VLANs, but the controller’s subsequent application connection still needs an allowed route and firewall policy. Validate discovery and control as separate steps.

Test the policy from both sides

  • From an IoT client, verify address assignment, gateway, and DNS resolution.
  • From the controller, check that the expected device is discoverable if discovery is required, then confirm the control or management session works.
  • Check the reverse direction only when a device is expected to initiate a connection to the controller or another service.
  • Try access to unrelated trusted hosts and confirm the isolation policy blocks it.
  • If same-VLAN isolation is enabled, verify any required local device-to-device features still function.

If an expected function fails, identify whether the failure is basic connectivity, discovery, or the application session. Review the specific device’s documented requirements and adjust only the rule or discovery setting tied to that failure, rather than weakening the entire VLAN policy.
