Set upload limits at more than one layer: cap the total HTTP request body at ingress, enforce an application-level audio-file policy, allow only documented media types, validate the file’s actual contents, and give each request stage its own timeout. The right values depend on accepted formats, recording duration, infrastructure, network conditions, and any downstream speech provider—not on a proxy default or another service’s cap.
How do I limit uploaded audio file size?
Use two related limits. The ingress limit caps the complete HTTP request body before it reaches application parsing; the application policy defines the maximum audio file your endpoint accepts. Keep them aligned, and check that requests cannot reach the application through a route that bypasses the ingress control.

A request-body limit is not always the same as a file-size limit. With multipart/form-data, the body also contains boundaries and form fields, so the request cap may need to be slightly higher than the permitted audio payload. Decide the file maximum from expected recording duration and formats, available memory and disk, bandwidth, abuse risk, and any downstream provider restriction. Set a deliberate request-body cap in the reverse proxy, API gateway, or platform ingress. Then apply the corresponding file-size policy in application code and use a maintained parser with bounded resource use. Avoid buffering an unbounded upload and only checking its size afterward.

For example, NGINX’s client_max_body_size controls the maximum client request body. Its documentation lists a default of 1m; a request above the configured value receives 413. Configure it at the appropriate http, server, or location context. Setting it to 0 disables this size check, rather than providing a meaningful limit. In FastAPI, UploadFile uses a spooled file that keeps data in memory up to a threshold and then stores it on disk; it also exposes a content_type value. Neither feature is an endpoint-wide request-body cap. Multipart parsing can occur before a dependency or endpoint checks UploadFile.size, so that check may be too late to protect parser resources. Treat provider caps as constraints, not defaults
A downstream service may impose a lower limit than your endpoint. For example, OpenAI’s speech-to-text guide, accessed October 4, 2026, states a 25 MB upload cap for the documented transcription API and lists mp3, mp4, mpeg, mpga, m4a, wav, and webm. The guide recommends compressing or splitting larger recordings; splitting mid-sentence can lose context. This is a provider- and endpoint-specific constraint, not a general recommendation for speech APIs or unrelated OpenAI endpoints. Check the current speech-to-text guide before relying on it.
How do I validate MIME type for an audio upload?
Document two things separately: the HTTP request content type your endpoint accepts (for example, multipart form data or a raw audio body) and the audio formats permitted inside that request. Reject unsupported or missing request content types with HTTP 415, except where your API explicitly allows an empty body. OWASP recommends these checks in its REST security guidance.

Do not treat a filename, extension, or declared Content-Type as proof of what the upload contains. They are user-provided metadata and can be spoofed. OWASP’s advice is to “Validate the file type, don’t trust the Content-Type header as it can be spoofed”. Use an allowlist, compare metadata with the actual content, and parse the file with a maintained library appropriate to the formats you support. What timeout should I set for file uploads?
There is no universal speech-upload timeout in the cited documentation. Set distinct deadlines for distinct work, using the slowest legitimate client upload rate and realistic processing and provider latency for your workload.

The NGINX defaults above are documented values and may be changed in deployment. The distinction between an idle interval and an end-to-end deadline matters: proxy_read_timeout applies between successive reads from the proxied server, rather than capping the full response transmission. Configure each timer at the hop and stage it actually controls; see the NGINX proxy module documentation and NGINX core module documentation.
Make client and server expectations coherent. If a client disconnects or a deadline expires, cancel downstream work where possible and clean up temporary files so that one layer does not stop waiting while another continues consuming resources.

Which upload design fits the endpoint?
Direct multipart uploads, object-storage uploads, and chunked or resumable uploads have different operational trade-offs; the cited guidance does not establish one architecture as best for every service. Compare them against the endpoint’s actual constraints:
- Payload and duration: Can the design accommodate the largest permitted recording and the downstream provider’s cap?
- Slow or unreliable networks: Does the client need retries or the ability to resume an interrupted transfer?
- Resource exposure: How much ingress bandwidth, parser work, memory, and temporary storage does an upload consume?
- Access control: How will authentication, authorization, and upload ownership work, especially if clients write to object storage directly?
- Operations: What additional storage, lifecycle cleanup, monitoring, and operational cost does the design introduce?
Regardless of architecture, preserve a clear size policy, validate actual content, and enforce limits at every layer that handles the upload.

- Specify the contract. List accepted request content types and audio formats, and publish the endpoint’s maximum file size and any distinction between file payload and total request size.

- Exercise boundary and failure cases. Test just below, at, and above the cap; unsupported and spoofed MIME types; malformed audio; slow body transmission; slow or absent upstream responses; client disconnects; and access through every ingress route.
