Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo scale a relaxation video for YouTube without distorting it, fit it inside a 16:9 output frame while preserving its display aspect ratio. For mixed-aspect-ratio sources, start with FFmpeg’s scale=1920:1080:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease:force_divisible_by=2 filter. Add padding if every output frame must be exactly 1920×1080; use a direct 1920×1080 scale only when the source is already 16:9. Scaling prepares the picture—it does not keep an FFmpeg process, computer, or internet connection running reliably around the clock.
Choose how the source should fit the 16:9 frame
A 1920×1080 canvas is a common landscape target for YouTube. The right filter depends on whether you want to preserve the entire image, fill every pixel of the frame, or deliberately crop the edges. Do not stretch a non-16:9 source simply to fill the canvas.

| Goal | Filter or approach | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Fit the whole source within a maximum 1920×1080 box | scale=1920:1080:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease:force_divisible_by=2 |
Preserves the source’s display aspect ratio, but may leave unused space around the image. |
| Fit the whole source and produce an exact 1920×1080 canvas | Scale with force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease, then add pad |
Preserves the full image and fills the remaining canvas with the chosen background (black by default). |
| Scale a verified 16:9 source to 1920×1080 | scale=1920:1080 |
Suitable when the source really is 16:9 and its aspect metadata is correct. |
| Fill the frame by enlarging and cropping | Use an increase-to-fill approach and crop deliberately | Fills the canvas but removes part of the source. Use only when losing those edges is acceptable. |
Inspect the source before choosing dimensions
Check the actual video’s dimensions, display aspect ratio (DAR), sample aspect ratio (SAR), frame rate, and pixel format before encoding. ffprobe can report stream metadata; for example, run ffprobe -v error -select_streams v:0 -show_entries stream=width,height,sample_aspect_ratio,display_aspect_ratio,r_frame_rate,pix_fmt -of default=noprint_wrappers=1 input.mp4, replacing input.mp4 with your file. Use the reported values as a starting point, then inspect the image itself: metadata can be wrong, and older or anamorphic video can use non-square pixels.
FFmpeg distinguishes SAR, the shape of individual encoded pixels, from DAR, the displayed shape of the image. Its FAQ explains that scaling adjusts SAR to preserve DAR. If the picture appears stretched because its aspect metadata is incorrect, scaling alone may not fix it; correct SAR or DAR metadata only when you have verified the intended display shape. FFmpeg documents setsar and setdar for deliberate corrections. See the FFmpeg FAQ and the scale filter documentation. The filter documentation is generated from FFmpeg’s newest revision, so behavior or available options may differ in an installed build.

Fit the video and pad it to a fixed frame
For a source that may not be 16:9, this filter chain fits it inside 1920×1080, makes the resulting dimensions divisible by two, and centers it on a fixed landscape canvas:
-vf "scale=1920:1080:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease:force_divisible_by=2,pad=1920:1080:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2"

force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease shrinks the relevant dimension as needed so the source stays within the requested box. The pad stage adds space around the scaled image; without it, the filter’s output dimensions may be smaller than 1920×1080. The default padding color is black. This is a filter configuration pattern, not a tested, complete command for a particular input, encoder, GPU, or FFmpeg build. Check the locally installed FFmpeg documentation and test the rendered result.
When a simple scale is enough
If inspection confirms a correctly tagged 16:9 source with square pixels, -vf "scale=1920:1080" may be sufficient. If your source is smaller than the target, this upscales it but cannot create genuine detail that is absent from the original. Choose a resolution that suits the source rather than treating 1080p as mandatory.

When cropping is acceptable
Fit-and-pad retains the whole visual but may create bars. Cropping can remove those bars while filling the frame, at the cost of losing image content near the edges. For a relaxation scene, check important details such as a horizon, candles, or text overlays before deciding to crop. FFmpeg’s scale filter also supports force_original_aspect_ratio=increase to cover a target box; a separate crop may be needed to make the final dimensions exact. Confirm the result in your installed version before using it live.
Set YouTube ingest resolution, codec, and bitrate together
Scaling determines output dimensions, but it does not determine whether your encoder can sustain the stream or whether your upload can carry it. YouTube’s live encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, recommends the following H.264 bitrates at the specified frame rates:

| Output | H.264 recommended bitrate | Frame rate covered by this figure |
|---|---|---|
| 480p | 4 Mbps | 30 fps |
| 720p | 8 Mbps | 30 fps |
| 1080p | 14 Mbps | 30 fps |
These are YouTube’s live-ingest recommendations for H.264 at the listed resolutions and 30 fps—not universal quality guarantees or requirements for every codec. YouTube’s recommended rates differ for AV1 and H.265/HEVC. Check its current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance for the codec and frame rate you will actually send.
YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS streaming, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR) encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Its advanced recommendations include square pixels, progressive scan, Rec. 709 for SDR, and 8-bit depth for SDR. Use settings your encoder and connection can sustain; a higher target resolution or bitrate is not automatically better if the source, encoding hardware, or upload path cannot support it.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the stream data to and through Google’s servers. Live Control Room detects encoder settings automatically by default and transcodes live streams into output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. That viewer-side transcoding does not remove the need to configure and monitor your outgoing encoder correctly.

- Render a representative test. Use the intended source, scaling, padding or crop, audio, codec, frame rate, and bitrate. Look for distortion, unexpected bars, cropped details, judder, and audio problems.
- Run an upload speed test. Compare sustained upload capacity with the stream’s bitrate and allow headroom for network variation and other traffic. A speed test is a check, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service.
- Connect to YouTube using the stream key. In your encoder, select the YouTube ingest destination and the stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key as a secret: do not publish it or share it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube and update the encoder.
- Check YouTube’s preflight and stream health. Start a private or unlisted test if appropriate, wait for Live Control Room to identify the incoming stream, and review its health messages while representative video and audio are running.
- Verify the viewer output. Watch the stream on YouTube and confirm framing, playback, audio, and any delay are acceptable before relying on the setup.
Scaling does not make a stream 24/7 reliable
A correct FFmpeg filter handles image geometry; it does not keep a process alive, recover from a crash, prevent power loss, or restore a dropped YouTube connection. A 24/7 setup also depends on a continuously available host, stable upload connectivity, an unattended process and restart plan, and monitoring. The official FFmpeg and YouTube guidance cited here does not establish a complete uptime or recovery plan for a relaxation stream.
Check that you have rights to the video, music, and other material in the stream. A continuous loop does not itself grant permission to use copyrighted content, and technical compliance with ingest recommendations is separate from YouTube’s content policies. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers technical settings, not whether a particular video is authorized or eligible under every applicable YouTube policy.
