For an HTTP sleep-sounds source, put FFmpeg’s reconnect options before the input’s -i. A useful starting point is -reconnect 1 -reconnect_streamed 1 -reconnect_at_eof 1; add network-error or HTTP-status retries only when they make sense for your source. These options can help FFmpeg recover from certain failures, but they do not guarantee uninterrupted playback.
Start with HTTP reconnect options
Use this as a baseline when the source is an HTTP live or endless stream. Replace SOURCE_URL with the source URL and add your output options where indicated:

The 30-second maximum is an illustrative choice, not a universal recommendation or a verified ideal for sleep-sounds streams. Test with your actual source and output. If an option is rejected or behaves differently, check ffmpeg -h protocol=http on the installed build.

What each reconnect option handles

Use only for statuses that may be temporary for your source. Many 4xx responses indicate a persistent authorization or request problem, so blindly retrying them can be counterproductive. |
These are HTTP protocol options, not universal reconnect switches. Do not assume they control RTSP, local-file looping, or every HLS demuxing case.

Set retry bounds deliberately
Reconnect behavior also needs limits. These options govern different parts of the policy:
-reconnect_delay_max Nsets the maximum reconnect delay before giving up.-reconnect_max_retries Ncaps the number of attempts. FFmpeg’s documentation says its default is unset.-reconnect_delay_total_max Nlimits the total reconnect delay.-respect_retry_after 1tells FFmpeg to honor a server’sRetry-Afterheader when encountered; the documentation notes its relevance to responses such as 429 and 503.
Choose bounds to match the service and your tolerance for delay versus continued retrying. A per-delay maximum, a retry-count cap, and a total-delay cap are not interchangeable. The FFmpeg documentation explains the options but does not promise a seamless listener experience after reconnection.

Check the protocol and installed FFmpeg build
Confirm that the source is actually HTTP and that your installed FFmpeg build supports the options you plan to use. Option availability and defaults can vary by released build. Upstream source declarations show defaults such as a 120-second reconnect_delay_max and a 256-second reconnect_delay_total_max, but the moving upstream branch is not a substitute for checking your own version’s help.

For relevant option behavior, consult the FFmpeg protocol documentation and upstream HTTP source declarations. The documented settings apply to HTTP handling and should not be read as a guarantee that every source protocol will reconnect the same way.

Troubleshoot reconnect failures
- FFmpeg says an option is unknown: Check
ffmpeg -h protocol=httpfor the installed build and remove or adjust options it does not support. - Retries happen at the wrong time: Check that the flags appear before the correct input’s
-i. Input options configure the associated input. - The source reaches EOF and FFmpeg stops: For an HTTP live or endless stream, include
-reconnect_at_eof 1; confirm the source is HTTP and test its behavior. - Retries continue against an HTTP error: Avoid broad 4xx retries if the status indicates a lasting authorization or request issue. Limit retry statuses to those plausibly transient for the service.
- FFmpeg exits despite reconnect flags: Reconnect options cover particular HTTP failure paths, not every possible process failure. A 24/7 setup also needs monitoring and an outer process supervisor for exits outside that reconnect path.
- Listeners still hear a gap: Reconnection does not guarantee seamless output. The documentation does not establish an uninterrupted listener experience.
