Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For a typical stereo stream, set FFmpeg to AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz: -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100. These are YouTube’s recommended stereo audio settings for live streaming over RTMP or RTMPS. The audio bitrate is not different just because a stream runs 24/7 or is marked as made for kids.
Set the audio options in FFmpeg
Place the audio options among the output options for the stream. For example, in a command that sends a video file to YouTube Live, the relevant portion could look like this:

ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -f flv "YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
This is an illustrative command, not a complete recommendation for every video source or encoding setup. Keep your existing video and ingest settings if they are already working; the audio settings shown are -c:a aac to choose AAC audio, -b:a 128k to set 128 kilobits per second, and -ar 44100 to set a 44.1 kHz sample rate. FFmpeg documents the audio bitrate option in bits per second and the sample-rate option in hertz: FFmpeg documentation.

Choose settings for the channel layout
YouTube’s live encoder guidance distinguishes stereo from 5.1 surround. Use the setting that matches the audio you are actually sending.

| Audio layout | YouTube-recommended bitrate | Format guidance for RTMP/RTMPS |

| Stereo | 128 kbps | AAC or MP3 are supported; AAC is used in the command above. |
| 5.1 surround | 384 kbps | AAC only. |
The values are YouTube Help’s live audio recommendations, not results of a comparative test. Do not choose 5.1 just to raise the bitrate: the source audio and output must use the intended channel layout. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
Test the stream and check audio health
- Make a representative test. Use audio and video similar to the material you plan to broadcast, including the same channel layout and FFmpeg output options.
- Start the broadcast and inspect YouTube’s stream health. Check the live control room for audio configuration notices or other ingest warnings while the test is running.
- Listen to the result. Confirm the audio is present and that the output sounds as intended; correct a mismatch between the source layout and stream configuration before depending on a long-running broadcast.
YouTube’s Live API documentation describes health statuses and configuration warnings: LiveStreams health-status documentation. A command containing the recommended values is not, by itself, proof that the actual ingest is healthy.

Does a 24/7 or kids’ stream need a different audio bitrate?
The cited YouTube live encoder guidance does not specify a separate audio bitrate for continuous duration or for content intended for children. Its listed audio recommendations are based on channel layout: 128 kbps for stereo and 384 kbps for 5.1. For an ordinary stereo stream, use the stereo recommendation and validate the live ingest rather than changing audio bitrate because the stream is continuous or audience-marked for children.
