One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIn OBS Studio, open Settings → Output, switch Output Mode to Advanced, select your streaming encoder, and enter custom options only in that encoder’s custom-options field. The field’s syntax and valid option names depend on the encoder: an NVENC parameter is not automatically valid for x264, AMD AMF, Quick Sync, or FFmpeg.
This guide focuses on OBS because the title does not specify an app or encoder. If you are trying to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running 24/7 rather than configure a live encoder, see the cloud option below.
Where to enter extra encoder parameters in OBS
- In OBS Studio, open Settings → Output.
- Set Output Mode to Advanced.
- Under Streaming, identify and select the encoder you actually use. Do not choose an option based on a guide for a different encoder.
- Open that encoder’s settings and look for its custom-options field. The field may not be available for every encoder or output mode.
- Use the selected encoder’s documentation to confirm each option’s exact spelling, value format, and separators before entering it.
For NVENC, OBS Studio 31.0 and later documents custom properties as space-separated option=value pairs. OBS’s AMF/FFmpeg interface also describes an option=value field; its example level=5.2 profile=main illustrates syntax, not a recommended universal streaming configuration. See the OBS Project’s Advanced NVENC Options (31.0).
Some encoder controls, including bitrate and keyframe interval, are available as ordinary OBS controls. Prefer those built-in controls when they provide the setting you need; add a custom option only when it is not exposed directly or the encoder’s documentation calls for it.

Identify the encoder before choosing options
OBS supports NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel Quick Sync Video, and Apple VideoToolbox hardware-encoding paths, as well as the x264 software encoder. Which choices appear depends on your operating system, hardware, and drivers. For example, the OBS compatibility notes specify supported GPU generations for NVENC and different platform requirements for AMF, Quick Sync, and VideoToolbox; Apple VideoToolbox streaming support also differs between Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. Check the current OBS hardware-encoding notes rather than assuming an encoder listed on another computer will be available on yours.
Before changing anything, record the OBS version, operating system, active encoder, codec, and streaming destination. Those details help distinguish a spelling error from an unsupported option or a platform incompatibility.

Use encoder-specific syntax and values
NVENC
OBS documents NVENC properties separately from standard OBS controls. Its page describes keyint as a keyframe interval in frames and explicitly says it is “Not a standard NVENC option.” It also documents gopLength, with guidance to use keyint except for the special infinite-GOP case. Rate-control properties such as averageBitRate and maxBitRate apply according to the rate-control mode. Confirm the current option list and the conditions attached to each property in the OBS NVENC documentation before using one.
AMF and FFmpeg
OBS’s AMF/FFmpeg interface describes a custom field using option=value syntax, but that does not make NVENC options portable to those encoders. Use the interface and documentation for the selected implementation, and treat the displayed level=5.2 profile=main as a syntax example only.

x264, Quick Sync, and VideoToolbox
These are distinct encoder implementations, with different controls and compatibility constraints. Do not paste an NVENC, AMF, or FFmpeg parameter string into another encoder’s field unless its documentation specifically supports every option. OBS’s Encoder API reference describes separate implementations; its advanced recording settings guide also shows different baselines for NVENC, x264, AMD, and Quick Sync. That guide concerns recording and illustrates implementation differences; its values are not automatic live-streaming recommendations.
Set streaming values with the destination in mind
Start with OBS’s normal streaming controls for rate control, bitrate, and keyframe interval. Then check the requirements of the service receiving the stream. A parameter that is accepted by an encoder can still conflict with the destination’s limits or preferred ingest settings.

NVIDIA’s OBS guide gives one example for its NVENC streaming workflow: CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, the P6 preset, High Quality tuning, and two-pass quarter-resolution multipass. These are vendor recommendations for that workflow, not universal settings for every encoder or streaming service. NVIDIA also notes that destination services may constrain keyframe intervals and that GPU utilization can be a reason to disable look-ahead. Its guide identifies a 6000 Kbps Twitch bitrate ceiling; because platform limits can change, verify the current limit directly before configuring a stream. See the NVIDIA NVENC OBS Guide.
Codec choice matters too. NVIDIA’s guide discusses H.264, HEVC, AV1, and HDR in the context of its workflow and distinguishes recommendations by destination and hardware. Do not enable HDR unless the service, capture pipeline, display, and encoder all support it.

Apply a change and check the result
- Change one custom property at a time and retain the previous value so you can revert it.
- Save the settings. If OBS does not apply a change to the active output, stop and restart the stream or reinitialize output as appropriate.
- Review the OBS log for an unsupported option, parsing error, or encoder initialization failure.
- Check the resulting stream at the destination. Confirm that it connects and that video, audio, and quality behave as intended; a value appearing in a field does not prove the encoder accepted it.
- If the stream fails, remove the last custom option or restore the original setting, then test again before making another change.
OBS’s documentation explains option syntax and encoder-specific behavior, but does not establish a universal test procedure that guarantees a setting works on every system. Your encoder, drivers, OBS build, and service all matter.
Troubleshoot common custom-option problems
- The field is missing: Confirm Settings → Output → Output Mode → Advanced, then check whether the selected encoder and output mode expose custom options. Not every encoder has the same interface.
- OBS rejects the option or output will not initialize: Check that the option belongs to the active encoder, matches its exact spelling and value format, and uses the documented separators. Remove the option to recover, then consult that encoder’s current documentation.
- A parameter works in a guide but not on your PC: The guide may target another encoder, OS, GPU generation, driver, or OBS version. Verify the active encoder and compatibility notes before trying another value.
- The stream connects but the destination reports a settings problem: Check the service’s current codec, bitrate, and keyframe requirements. A setting supported by the encoder is not necessarily accepted by the service.
- GPU load becomes too high: Check encoder utilization and the selected workload. NVIDIA specifically notes look-ahead can be disabled when GPU utilization is an issue in its NVENC workflow; do not generalize that instruction to other encoders.
- Quality or performance gets worse: Revert the latest change and compare one change at a time. A custom value is not inherently an improvement; it must suit the encoder, available bitrate, target quality, and hardware.
