For videos you own or are authorized to archive, export the files through YouTube Studio or Google Takeout, copy them to an external hard drive, and keep a second copy on separate storage. First measure the collection and estimate its growth; there is no single drive size that fits every library. YouTube Premium offline downloads are for viewing inside YouTube, not a portable archive of ordinary video files.
First decide what belongs in your archive
A 24/7 YouTube library can mean your own channel uploads, videos you have permission to keep, or a list of public videos you want to watch later. Those are different cases. YouTube provides download routes for a creator’s own uploads; do not assume that a public video can be downloaded and stored permanently just because it is viewable.

Use YouTube Studio for individual uploads

Sign in to the YouTube account that owns the videos and open YouTube Studio.

Open Content, find the video, and use its options to download it.

Save the downloaded MP4 to a temporary folder on your computer. Check that the file opens and has the expected title before moving it into the archive.
YouTube Help says creator downloads may be provided as MP4 files at 720p or 360p, depending on video size. Downloading may not be available for videos that have been removed, videos with certain strikes, or videos using preapproved audio. YouTube also lists a limit of five downloads per video in a 24-hour period.
Use Google Takeout for a channel-wide export
If you need many or all of your channel uploads, Google Takeout is the bulk-export route described by YouTube Help. Choose the YouTube data to export, create the export, and download the resulting archive when it is ready. Extract its contents on your computer, inspect the folders and files, and then copy the video files to the external drive. Keep the export archive until you have checked that the extracted videos are present and playable.
Premium offline downloads are not file exports
YouTube Premium offline playback is accessed in YouTube while signed in. YouTube says offline availability can require reconnecting and syncing, and a video that is no longer available may be removed on the next sync. The offline feature is useful for watching without a connection, but it is not a set of portable MP4 files that you can copy to an external disk as a permanent archive.
Measure the library before choosing a drive

Gather the files you are entitled to archive, including any new exports you have not yet moved into your main library.

Check the total size of those files in your computer’s file manager. If the material is spread across folders, select the folders together or record their individual sizes and add them.

Estimate how much material you expect to add over the period you want the drive to serve. Add that estimate to the current total, then leave room for folders, metadata, and normal working overhead.

Compare the resulting target with the drive’s rated capacity, not just the size of the current collection. The usable capacity shown by a computer can be lower than the manufacturer’s nominal capacity.
Capacity depends on your actual files and growth rate; the title of this article cannot establish a universal number. As one manufacturer example, Western Digital’s 2025 G-DRIVE datasheet lists configurations including 18TB, 22TB, 24TB, and 26TB. It lists up to 280MB/s read and write for the 22TB and 24TB configurations, based on internal testing and subject to host and usage conditions. These are manufacturer specifications, not an independent comparison or a recommendation that this model is best for every library; specifications may change and actual usable capacity may be lower.
Choose a drive for your computer and access pattern
External USB hard drive: simplest for one user
A USB external hard drive is a straightforward choice when one computer at a time will manage the archive. A portable model is easier to move; a larger desk-based drive may suit a stationary collection. Before buying, verify the exact model’s connection, power requirements, operating-system compatibility, and supported file system against your computer and ports.
NAS: consider it when several people need access
A network-attached storage device can make sense when multiple users need to access the library over a network. It adds network configuration and is less portable than a directly connected drive. For one person and one computer at a time, a NAS is not a required upgrade.
Do not choose only by a speed claim
For an archive that is mostly copied and played back occasionally, capacity, compatibility, and a second copy are usually more important decision points than a headline transfer-rate figure. Manufacturer speed claims can depend on the host computer, connection, file sizes, and usage conditions.
Copy and organize the archive

Connect and prepare the drive according to the manufacturer’s instructions. If formatting is required, check that the selected file system works with every computer you intend to use; formatting erases existing data on that drive.

Create a consistent folder structure, for example
Channel or Subject / Year. Avoid relying on a single vague folder name such as “Videos.”The Tool Desk

Give each file a durable name that preserves the title and date or another identifier. Keep the original export filename or identifier where possible so you can relate it back to the source.

Maintain a small index or spreadsheet with the video title, original YouTube URL, upload date, channel, local file path, and any relevant rights or permission notes. These fields are practical cataloging suggestions, not a required standard.

Copy the files, then open a sample from each major folder on the external drive. Confirm the copy completed and the videos play before deleting temporary files from the computer.
Make a second copy and check it periodically
An external drive holding the only copy is an archive, but not a backup. A drive can fail, be damaged, or be lost. Keep a second copy on a separate drive or independent storage, and make sure it is not permanently exposed to the same risks as the primary copy.

After a large copy, compare file counts and folder sizes between copies, and open a sample of files from each.

Periodically check that both copies remain readable and agree. For a large or important archive, use a checksum-capable file tool or backup program to detect changes rather than relying only on a quick visual check.

Plan to refresh aging storage. An archival guide recommends anticipating media replacement at approximately 3–5 years; treat that as the guide’s planning advice, not a guaranteed lifespan or universal replacement deadline.

Do not count RAID alone as backup. RAID may improve fault tolerance, but it does not provide the independent copy needed to recover from deletion, theft, or other failures affecting the whole system.

Common problems and fixes
You cannot find a download option for a video
Check that you are signed into the account that owns the upload and look in YouTube Studio’s Content list. Some videos may not be downloadable because they were removed, have certain strikes, or use preapproved audio. For a channel-wide export, use Google Takeout rather than attempting repeated downloads; YouTube Help lists a five-download-per-video limit in a 24-hour period.
The saved file is smaller or lower resolution than expected
YouTube’s creator download tool may provide 720p or 360p depending on video size. Confirm the export’s resolution and playback before treating it as a full-quality master. If you have the original recording, preserve that separately when you need a higher-quality source.
The drive fills sooner than expected
Check the folder sizes and include both existing exports and planned additions in your capacity estimate. Also account for the difference between nominal and usable capacity. Move temporary duplicate exports out of the archive only after confirming that the primary archive and its second copy are intact.
A video disappears from Premium offline viewing
Offline availability is managed inside YouTube and can depend on reconnecting and syncing. A video that is no longer available may be removed on a later sync. Premium offline viewing does not create a portable archive file that can be restored from the external drive.
The second drive does not protect the archive
Verify that it contains a separate, complete copy rather than merely another folder pointing to the same files or a RAID mirror. Check that files open from the second device and that it is stored independently enough to help if the primary drive is lost or damaged.
