On most Android phones, go to Settings > Apps > Default apps > Digital assistant app > Default digital assistant app, then choose an app that appears in the list. Menu names vary by manufacturer and Android version, so search Settings for digital assistant app if you cannot find the entry. The chooser—not the app’s mere installation—determines which assistant responds to supported buttons, gestures, or voice activation.
What the Android default-assistant setting controls
Android’s default digital assistant is the primary assistant opened by supported touch or voice actions. Google’s help describes it as the assistant app used on the device, such as Gemini or Google Assistant. Changing this setting does not automatically change every voice feature, notification, or in-app shortcut; it changes the assistant Android invokes through its supported system action.

The exact menu can differ among phone makers, Android releases, navigation modes, and regional builds. If the labels below do not match your phone, open Settings and search for digital assistant app. You may also see a None option, which disables a default assistant rather than selecting another one.

Set the default assistant from Android Settings
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Open Default apps. Some devices place this under an additional menu such as Choose default apps.
- Tap Digital assistant app.
- Tap Default digital assistant app.
- Select the app you want, or choose None if you do not want a system assistant.
Google’s current instructions identify this as the general Android route, while warning that manufacturers can change the path and wording. If the labels below do not match your phone, search Settings for digital assistant app instead of guessing at a manufacturer-specific menu. Searching is often faster than looking through every Apps submenu.
If a named app is not offered, the official instructions do not establish that it is available as a system assistant on that particular phone or software build. Do not assume that installing an app, sideloading it, or opening a hidden menu will make it selectable. Android’s displayed list is the practical compatibility check for that device at that time.
Confirm that the change worked
Use the activation method you actually rely on: press and hold the power button or Home button, or swipe inward from a navigation corner if your phone uses gesture navigation. The available gesture depends on the device and navigation mode. The assistant that opens is the one Android currently uses for that action.

Test more than one method only when your phone supports more than one. A successful button test does not prove that a wake phrase is enabled, and a working voice feature does not prove that the power button is assigned to the digital assistant. Treat each trigger as a separate control.
If the old assistant still appears, check the phone’s button and gesture configuration separately. Android’s help says a power-button action labeled Digital assistant opens the current default assistant. Search Settings for power, side button, or gesture to find controls that may be overriding, disabling, or assigning another action to the shortcut.
Before you start: requirements and limitations
- Install the official app: For ChatGPT and Claude in particular, use the official Android listing. OpenAI directs users to the Play Store listing for current device and operating-system requirements; Anthropic documents its Claude Android app separately.
- Expect device variation: Android versions, manufacturer overlays, navigation modes, regions, installed apps, and later app releases can change the labels and available choices.
- Separate selection from activation: Choosing an app in the default-assistant page and assigning a power or side button are related but distinct steps.
- Do not treat installation as proof of support: An installed app can still be absent from the system chooser.
- Do not expect a universal fee or accessory: Changing this software setting requires no physical product. The reviewed instructions identify no accessory or repair item needed to complete it.
These limitations explain why a tutorial that works on one handset can look different on another. The app list shown on your phone is more decisive than a screenshot from a different Android model.
Gemini: the documented Google setup
Gemini has an additional Google-specific requirement: Google says the Google app must be set as the default assist app for Gemini to operate as the primary mobile assistant. The Android-wide chooser may show Google rather than a separate Gemini entry because Google’s assistant configuration handles the selection.

Choose Gemini through the Google app
- Open the Google app.
- Open its assistant or Gemini settings and select the option to use Gemini as the assistant.
- Follow the prompts to make the Google app the default assist app if the setup requests it.
- Return to the phone’s assistant shortcut and test it.
If you are looking only for a separate Gemini label in Android’s broad chooser, you may not find one. Google’s configuration can present the Google app as the default assist app while Gemini is the selected assistant inside Google’s own settings. That is why the Google-app route and the Android default-app route should be viewed together rather than as competing instructions.
Choose Gemini through Android Settings
Google’s Android-specific guide also describes a path through Settings > Apps > Assistant > Digital assistants from Google > Gemini. The labels and nesting can differ by phone, so use Settings search if Assistant or Digital assistants from Google is not visible. This Google-specific screen is separate from the broader Default apps > Digital assistant app page on some devices.

After selecting Gemini, return to the activation method supported by your phone. If that method still opens another assistant, inspect the power, side-button, Home, and gesture assignments rather than repeatedly changing the Gemini selection.
Gemini activation and voice requirements
Google says Gemini can be opened with Hey Google when that feature is enabled, or with touch methods such as the power button, Home button, or a corner swipe, depending on the device. Voice activation may require Voice Match, and Google notes that Hey Google is not available in every language. A successful Gemini selection therefore does not guarantee that every activation method is enabled.
If a touch shortcut opens Gemini but “Hey Google” does not, check Voice Match and language availability. If “Hey Google” works but a long press opens something else, check the phone’s button or navigation settings. These are different failure points.
Perplexity: availability depends on the chooser and phone model
Perplexity’s product update dated 10 April 2025 explicitly promoted the app as a default Android Assistant for access from anywhere on the phone. On a general Android device, the practical check remains the Android assistant chooser: open Settings > Apps > Default apps > Digital assistant app > Default digital assistant app and select Perplexity only if the phone lists it.
The reviewed Perplexity material does not specify a single current menu sequence that works on every Android phone. App availability can vary with the manufacturer, Android build, installed version, region, and later releases. If Perplexity is absent from the list, Android has not exposed it as a selectable assistant on that device at that time.
Perplexity’s wording establishes that the company supports the idea of a default Android Assistant, but it is not a guarantee that every handset, country, or app release will expose the same option. Use the standard chooser as the test, then verify the shortcut your phone provides.

Perplexity’s 26 February 2026 update describes a model-specific integration for the Samsung Galaxy S26. The company says Perplexity is preloaded and can be launched with Hey Plex or the side button, with system-level integration. That arrangement should not be treated as a universal Android procedure or as evidence that every Samsung phone exposes the same controls. On other models, use the standard chooser and the phone’s own side-button settings.
Even on a phone with deeper integration, check which action the side button is assigned to. A button may be configured for another function, so the presence of an app on the phone does not by itself identify what a long press will do.
Claude: what is and is not documented
Anthropic’s reviewed Android documentation covers Claude’s Android app and connections to system apps, including messaging, email, calendar, alarms, timers, maps and location, and Health Connect subject to stated restrictions. Those materials do not provide a procedure for making Claude the system’s default digital assistant, nor do they confirm that Claude appears in every Android assistant chooser.

To check your phone, install the current Claude app from the official Android app listing, then follow the Android Settings path above. If Claude appears under Default digital assistant app, you can select it and test your normal shortcut. If it does not appear, the documentation does not support a universal workaround; availability may change with the phone’s software, region, or a later app release.
Claude’s connections to messaging, email, calendar, alarms, timers, maps, location, and (with restrictions) Health Connect describe what the app can connect to, not proof that Android will invoke it as the system assistant. Keep those two questions separate when evaluating the app.
ChatGPT: check the app list on your device
OpenAI’s official FAQ instructs Android users to install the ChatGPT app published by OpenAI and directs them to the Play Store listing for current device and operating-system requirements. The reviewed OpenAI material does not give a procedure for assigning ChatGPT as Android’s default digital assistant and does not confirm that ChatGPT is present in every device’s chooser.
After installation, open Settings > Apps > Default apps > Digital assistant app > Default digital assistant app. Select ChatGPT only if Android offers it. If it is missing, the available official information does not establish that the app can be made the system assistant on that build. You can still open ChatGPT normally from its app icon or other shortcuts provided by the app, but those are separate from Android’s default-assistant setting.
Do not infer universal support from an older article, an unofficial remapping tip, or another person’s phone. The relevant question is whether your current device lists the installed official app in its own chooser.

The table describes documented setup and availability, not answer quality. The official material does not provide a fair cross-device ranking, and an assistant that appears on one phone may not appear on another. Compare the options on three practical axes: whether your phone lists the app, which activation methods your phone supports, and whether the vendor documents a phone-specific integration.
When the assistant is missing from the list
- Confirm the menu: Search Settings for digital assistant app rather than relying on a manufacturer’s exact wording.
- Check installation: Make sure the official app is installed and updated through its official Android listing. Installation alone does not guarantee eligibility for the system chooser.
- Check the current account and region: Assistant availability can vary by device software, installed apps, region, and app release.
- Check Google-specific Gemini configuration: Gemini’s documented setup requires the Google app as the default assist app and may use a separate Google assistant screen.
- Do not infer support from another phone: A Perplexity integration on a Galaxy S26 does not establish the same behavior on other Galaxy models or Android devices.
- Avoid unsupported workarounds: The reviewed official instructions do not establish sideloading, hidden menus, or third-party remapping as universal fixes for a missing entry.
If the app remains absent after these checks, the honest conclusion is that your phone is not currently offering it through the documented system chooser. You can continue using the app’s own icon or documented in-app shortcuts, but those do not make it the Android default assistant.
When the shortcut opens the wrong assistant
Power or side button
Open Settings and search for power or side button. Set the relevant long-press action to Digital assistant if your phone offers that choice. Android’s documented behavior is that this action opens the current default assistant; a button assigned to a different function will not test the assistant setting.
Home button or gesture navigation
With three-button navigation, a long press of Home may be the assistant gesture. With gesture navigation, the trigger may be a swipe from a lower corner. Manufacturers can change or disable these gestures, so inspect Settings for gesture or navigation options and test the method supported by your phone.

If you switch navigation modes while troubleshooting, test again after the switch. The trigger itself can change when the phone moves between three-button and gesture navigation, even though the selected default assistant has not changed.
Voice activation
Voice wake words are configured independently from the app chooser. For Gemini, Google says Hey Google may require Voice Match and is unavailable in some languages. If the touch shortcut opens the intended assistant but a wake phrase does not, troubleshoot the voice feature and language settings rather than changing the default again.
Conversely, a working wake phrase does not prove that a side button or corner swipe is assigned correctly. Test the exact trigger you plan to use every day.

Making an app the default assistant gives it the position Android uses for supported system-assistant actions. Each app can request different permissions or connections to system services. Review the permissions shown by Android and the app’s own settings, especially when enabling messaging, email, calendar, location, alarms, timers, voice matching, or health-related integrations.

Likewise, a voice feature advertised by an app may require its own account, language, microphone permission, or activation setting.
Changing the default does not automatically grant every permission. Android may ask separately for access when you use a feature, and you can review or change permissions in the app’s settings. If a capability does not work, check its permission and setup requirements rather than assuming the default-assistant selection failed.
How to return to Google or disable the assistant
- Open Settings > Apps > Default apps > Digital assistant app.
- Tap Default digital assistant app.
- Select the assistant you want to restore, such as the Google-listed option on your device, or choose None.
- Retest the power, Home, gesture, or voice method you use.
Google’s help notes that when a user is using Gemini or Google Assistant, the listed choice may appear as Google. Therefore, the label in the chooser may not match the assistant’s conversational name shown elsewhere in Google’s apps.
Choosing None removes the default selection; it does not uninstall any assistant app. You can later return to the same page and choose an offered app again.

The reliable first step for any Android phone is the device’s Digital assistant app chooser. Gemini has the clearest documented Android path, including the requirement that the Google app serve as the default assist app. Perplexity has publicly positioned its app as a default Android Assistant and separately documents deeper integration on the Samsung Galaxy S26. The reviewed Claude and OpenAI materials explain their Android apps but do not settle default-assistant availability for every phone. Your phone’s offered list is therefore the final authority.
In practical terms, select an app only when Android presents it, configure the button or gesture you intend to use, and troubleshoot voice activation separately. That approach avoids promising compatibility that the device, region, or current app release may not provide.
