No. There is no stated requirement to complete Grand Theft Auto V before starting Grand Theft Auto VI. Rockstar’s published introduction gives GTA VI its own protagonists, setting and central conflict, while Take-Two describes it as a single-player experience. That makes GTA V an optional revisit for enjoyment or context, not documented preparation you must complete.
The careful qualification is important: the official material reviewed does not explicitly promise that GTA VI contains no returning characters, references or details that reward familiarity with GTA V. It simply does not say that finishing the earlier game is necessary.

What the official information actually says
Rockstar’s official GTA VI page introduces a new playable setup through Jason and Lucia. Its synopsis says: “Jason and Lucia have always known the deck is stacked against them. But when an easy score goes wrong, they find themselves on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America, in the middle of a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida — forced to rely on each other more than ever if they want to make it out alive.”

Take-Two’s June 24, 2026 announcement also describes GTA VI as a single-player experience. A single-player label does not, by itself, prove that every plot reference will be explained to a newcomer, but it confirms that the advertised experience is built around its own campaign rather than requiring multiplayer progression from GTA V.
Therefore, the strongest accurate wording is “there is no stated requirement.” Saying that Rockstar has definitively confirmed that no prior knowledge matters would go further than the published evidence.
Why you can reasonably start with GTA VI
It has a published starting point of its own
Jason and Lucia are the people Rockstar places at the center of the official synopsis. The conflict begins when an easy score goes wrong and expands into a conspiracy across Leonida. A player can use that setup as the entry point without first completing another campaign.
Games sometimes share a universe while still introducing each installment through a new cast, location or crisis. The official GTA VI material provides enough of that new setup to identify what the player is being asked to follow at the beginning: who the principal characters are, where events occur and what threatens them.

Completion and familiarity are different questions
Finishing GTA V would give you experience with an earlier Grand Theft Auto campaign, but completion is a binary milestone that the official pages do not identify as a condition for launching or understanding GTA VI. You should not treat an unfinished GTA V save as a reason to delay the new game.
Likewise, playing only part of GTA V is not an officially defined preparation tier. There is no published list saying that a particular mission, character arc or ending must be seen first. Any play-order advice beyond “GTA V is optional” is a personal preference rather than a documented requirement.
What remains unknown about continuity
The available official pages do not settle several questions that players naturally ask:
- Whether any GTA V characters return in GTA VI.
- Whether GTA VI directly references specific GTA V events.
- Whether prior knowledge adds context to particular scenes, jokes or locations.
- Whether the two campaigns share plot details that are intentionally clearer to returning players.
Do not mistake those unanswered questions for evidence of a hidden prerequisite. They are simply details that have not been established by the cited official material. Fan theories, trailers interpreted out of context and rumors cannot turn an unknown continuity detail into a requirement.

Choose your play order by your goal
The practical decision is about what you want to do before launch, not about satisfying an official checklist.

Check access on your own hardware
Take-Two lists GTA V among the titles in the GTA+ Games Library. That makes GTA V a possible optional way to access the earlier game for eligible players, but it does not change its status as non-required preparation. Check the current service listing and your console compatibility before relying on that route.
GTA VI launch and platform facts that affect your plan
As of October 2026, Rockstar lists GTA VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a stated launch date of November 19, 2026, on its official product page. If you are deciding whether to finish GTA V before launch, your available console and the release date are concrete planning constraints; campaign completion is not.

The physical-edition detail has a practical consequence: a boxed copy still requires a download code rather than a game disc. Make sure the console can connect to the internet, redeem the code and install the required files. That logistical preparation is separate from any question about GTA V story knowledge.

- Identify your reason for considering GTA V. If you want entertainment, nostalgia or a refresher, those are valid reasons to play it. If you are trying to unlock GTA VI, no official source says that you can.
- Check your GTA VI platform. The currently listed systems are PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Confirm that your hardware matches before organizing a play order.
- Choose a time budget. Give yourself a date or number of sessions for GTA V only if that makes the replay enjoyable. Do not postpone GTA VI indefinitely to satisfy an unofficial completion rule.
- Read the official GTA VI setup. Keep Jason, Lucia, Leonida and the criminal conspiracy as your confirmed starting information. Treat unannounced connections as unknown.

“Connected” does not mean “required”

If you have never finished GTA V, you can still plan to begin GTA VI when it launches. The official synopsis gives GTA VI its own Jason-and-Lucia setup in Leonida, and no reviewed official source names GTA V completion as a prerequisite.
