How to Set Bitrate and Keyframe Interval for an Automated YouTube Live Stream

Use YouTube’s codec-specific bitrate recommendations, CBR, and a 2-second keyframe interval. This guide covers stream keys, upload headroom, testing, and automation pitfalls.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a stable automated YouTube stream, set the encoder to a resolution and frame rate first, then choose the matching bitrate for its ingest codec. Use CBR, set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds, and use RTMPS when available. Check your measured upload capacity with headroom, then rehearse the whole start, stop, and recovery process before relying on it unattended.

Recommended settings at a glance

  • Bitrate: Use YouTube’s recommended value for your resolution, frame rate, and ingest codec—not a value copied from a different mode or codec.
  • Rate control: CBR.
  • Keyframe interval: 2 seconds. YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
  • Protocol: RTMPS where your encoder supports it; YouTube recommends it.
  • Network: Confirm outbound upload capacity can sustain the stream and YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.

These are settings for the encoder’s incoming feed. YouTube transcodes streams for viewer delivery, so the ingest bitrate is not a promise of a particular viewer-side quality.

Choose a bitrate for your codec and video mode

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists the following recommended ingest bitrates. Values are Mbps. The page was checked on October 3, 2026; it does not display a publication or update date. These are vendor recommendations, not guaranteed visual-quality outcomes. Scene complexity and encoder quality also affect the result.

Resolution and frame rate AV1 / H.265 recommended H.264 recommended
2160p60 35 Mbps 50 Mbps
2160p30 30 Mbps 42 Mbps
1440p60 24 Mbps 34 Mbps
1440p30 15 Mbps 21 Mbps
1080p60 12 Mbps 17 Mbps
1080p30 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
720p60 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p30 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
480p30 3 Mbps 4 Mbps
360p30 3 Mbps 4 Mbps

For example, if the encoder sends H.264 at 1080p30, the recommended setting is 14 Mbps; for H.264 at 1080p60, it is 17 Mbps. At those same modes, AV1 or H.265 recommendations are 10 Mbps and 12 Mbps respectively. Do not use one codec’s figure for another codec simply because the resolution and frame rate match.

Recommended bitrate is not the minimum

YouTube also specifies lower minimum ingest rates. For H.264, the listed minimums are 6 Mbps at 1080p60, 5 Mbps at 1080p30, 3 Mbps at 720p60 or 720p30, and 0.4 Mbps at 480p30 or 360p30. For AV1 or H.265, the corresponding minimums are 4, 4, 2, and 0.3 Mbps. Higher-resolution modes have their own values in YouTube’s full table. Treat a minimum as a floor, not the usual target when your connection can sustain the recommended rate. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table for the complete current values.

Set the keyframe interval to two seconds

YouTube’s setting is expressed as time: its guidance recommends a keyframe every 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. The required frame count depends on the output frame rate:

Output frame rate Frames for a 2-second interval
30 fps 60 frames
60 fps 120 frames

If the encoder asks for seconds, enter 2. If it asks for frames, multiply the frame rate by 2. Keyframe interval and bitrate are separate controls: selecting the recommended bitrate does not compensate for a keyframe interval that is too long.

Configure the encoder and YouTube stream

  1. Choose resolution and frame rate in the encoder. Decide what your source and audience need, and use a mode the encoder can sustain. YouTube says the encoder needs resolution, frame rate, and bitrate specified; it detects other encoder settings. Manual resolution selection is available with a custom stream key and manual settings enabled. YouTube encoder settings
  2. Select the ingest codec. Use H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 only if your encoder and workflow support it, then use that codec’s column in the bitrate table. YouTube’s cited encoder page lists frame rates up to 60 fps.
  3. Set CBR and the matching bitrate. Pick the recommended Mbps value for the selected mode and codec. For example, H.264 at 1080p30 calls for 14 Mbps in YouTube’s table.
  4. Set keyframes to 2 seconds. Enter 60 frames at 30 fps or 120 frames at 60 fps if the field uses frames. Do not exceed a 4-second interval under YouTube’s guidance.
  5. Choose RTMPS if available. YouTube describes it as the secure extension to RTMP and recommends it. Confirm that your encoder supports the selected ingest protocol. YouTube encoder settings
  6. Create or schedule the event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Copy its stream URL and stream key into the encoder. A reusable or custom stream key and saved stream settings can simplify recurring events. Handle the key like a password; reset it if it is exposed. Manage live streams in YouTube · Set up your encoder
  7. Set YouTube’s start and stop controls if appropriate. Auto-start and Auto-stop in stream settings allow starting or stopping from the encoder. They control YouTube’s side of the workflow; they do not ensure that a particular encoder can wake a computer, schedule itself, reconnect, or run unattended indefinitely.
  8. Measure upload capacity and test the actual stream. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate. Check outbound speed, not download speed, and budget for its recommended 20% headroom. Shared network use can reduce the capacity available to the stream. If sending a backup stream as well, allow for the primary and backup rates. YouTube encoder settings · YouTube network and streaming tips
  9. Rehearse unattended operation. Use representative movement and audio, confirm the preview appears, and monitor stream health and messages. Test scheduled start, stop, reconnect, and any failover behavior with the specific encoder before relying on it for an unattended event.

Special cases: 4K and HDR

4K latency

YouTube says its low-latency improvement option is unavailable for 2160p (4K) streams; those streams use normal latency. Choose 4K for its image detail, not on the assumption that the low-latency option will be available. YouTube encoder settings

HDR encoding

For HDR, YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S); its cited guidance does not support AV1 for HDR. The page lists 10-bit depth for HDR and 8-bit for SDR. Make sure the source, encoder, and output settings agree on SDR or HDR rather than enabling HDR as an isolated encoder option. YouTube encoder settings

Troubleshoot an automated stream

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Preview does not appear Encoder is not sending to the intended stream URL or key, or the stream has not started. Confirm the event, URL, key, protocol, and encoder status. If the key may be compromised, reset it and update the encoder.
Stream health degrades or video drops Available outbound capacity is below the stream’s sustained demand or fluctuates due to shared use. Run an upload speed test, compare outbound capacity with the selected bitrate plus headroom, and reduce the output mode if necessary.
Motion looks poor despite using the recommended bitrate Bitrate is only one factor; scene complexity, encoding quality, resolution, or frame rate may not suit the available connection. Verify codec and mode match the selected row, test representative motion, and choose a lower resolution or frame rate if the connection cannot reliably sustain the recommendation.
Keyframe-related warning or playback issue The keyframe duration may be longer than YouTube recommends, or a frame-count field may have been interpreted as seconds. Set a 2-second interval—60 frames at 30 fps or 120 at 60 fps—and verify the encoder’s units.
Stream does not start or stop on schedule YouTube’s Auto-start/Auto-stop setting or the encoder’s own scheduling behavior may not match the intended workflow. Check YouTube stream settings and confirm the encoder itself supports the required schedule and unattended operation; validate by rehearsal.
Stream stops and does not recover Automatic recovery is encoder-specific; YouTube’s controls do not guarantee that an encoder process reconnects after failure. Check the encoder’s reconnection and restart configuration, then test failure recovery before depending on it live.
