You can use FFmpeg on an OVHcloud VPS to send a playlist to YouTube Live around the clock: keep the media files on the VPS, create a stream in YouTube Studio, and point FFmpeg at the stream URL and key. The VPS can keep the encoder running while your own computer is off, but the setup is not automatically fail-proof. You need compatible media, enough outbound capacity, a protected stream key, monitoring, and a plan for restarts and YouTube’s archive limits.
What runs on the VPS—and what does not
The VPS is the always-on encoder host. FFmpeg reads media files stored on or accessible from the VPS and sends the encoded output to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. Your home computer and internet connection are not part of the delivery path once the VPS is configured.

OVHcloud describes its VPS resources as shared and makes the customer responsible for VPS administration. The title does not establish which current VPS plan will suit a particular playlist or encoding mode. Before ordering, check the plan’s CPU, memory, storage, region, outbound bandwidth and applicable terms. OVHcloud’s cited terms also say bandwidth may be restricted to 1 Mbps in cases of excessive use; this is a contractual caveat, not a typical plan speed. Review the applicable OVHcloud VPS terms for your plan and region.
Prepare a compatible playlist
Put the files in a known location
Store the videos on the VPS, for example in /srv/playlist/, and decide their playback order. A playlist file for FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can look like this:

Check stream compatibility before relying on concat
The concat demuxer sequences files and adjusts timestamps, but it expects compatible streams, including matching codecs and time bases. Duration information matters: inaccurate durations can cause timestamp errors or playback artifacts. Do not assume unrelated videos will join seamlessly. Concat sequencing is not, by itself, proof that a particular command will repeat any arbitrary mixed playlist forever. FFmpeg’s image-sequence loop option applies to image inputs; do not treat it as a tested solution for endlessly looping a video concat list. Choose and test a repeat strategy with the FFmpeg build installed on your VPS, first with a short playlist and a private or unlisted YouTube stream.
Create the YouTube Live stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and select Go Live. Create or schedule the stream in Live Control Room.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. FFmpeg needs both to connect to YouTube’s ingest service. Use the exact values shown for that stream.
- Prefer the secure URL when available. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which is RTMP over TLS. Copy the RTMPS URL supplied in Live Control Room rather than guessing an endpoint. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains where to find the stream settings; its RTMPS guidance covers the secure connection.
- Keep the key secret. YouTube Help says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not publish it in a script repository, screenshot, shared command, shell history or log. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder configuration. See YouTube’s stream-key settings guidance.
Choose video settings for the source and VPS capacity
Use YouTube’s current encoder table as the reference, and match output settings to the source and the VPS’s real outbound capacity. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 and AV1 video codecs, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a keyframe interval recommended at 2 seconds and no longer than 4 seconds. For H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps, the listed recommended bitrate is 10 Mbps. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a VPS plan can sustain a stream. Check YouTube’s current bitrate and encoder settings before configuring FFmpeg.

- Resolution and frame rate: Do not upscale low-resolution or low-frame-rate source material simply to select a larger output setting. Keep the output appropriate to the source.
- Bitrate: Compare the chosen stream bitrate with the VPS’s available outbound bandwidth, not your home connection’s speed test. YouTube advises that total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% headroom. Use YouTube’s bandwidth and stream-health guidance.
- Keyframes: Target a 2-second interval and do not exceed 4 seconds, consistent with YouTube’s recommendation.
- Audio and codecs: Confirm the media has the audio/video streams you intend to send and that the FFmpeg build and YouTube ingest settings support the selected codecs.
Start with a test, then monitor the long-running process
- Run a short test first. Use a private or unlisted stream, confirm that video moves and audio is present, and check the preview and stream health in Live Control Room.
- Inspect FFmpeg output. Watch for connection errors, timestamp problems, missing streams, repeated reconnects or encoding overload. A stream that appears connected is not necessarily healthy throughout.
- Plan for process and host restarts. Configure an appropriate service manager or other restart mechanism for the operating system you administer, and arrange a way to notice failures. The exact service configuration depends on the OS and command you choose; test both a process failure and a VPS reboot before relying on it.
- Keep recovery limits in view. Restarting FFmpeg may help after an encoder process failure, but it cannot resolve every host, network, invalid-key or YouTube-side problem. Check the VPS and Live Control Room when an automatic restart does not restore delivery.
YouTube recommends testing before a live event and monitoring stream health. See the YouTube encoder guide for its setup and monitoring guidance. A VPS contract does not guarantee uninterrupted application-level streaming.
Plan replay archiving separately from continuous delivery
YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not promise that one uninterrupted 24-hour stream will become a complete replay. Treat live delivery and replay archiving as separate needs: check the current Studio behavior, consider whether to schedule distinct sessions, or make a separate local recording if you have suitable storage and the rights to retain the material. Secure and maintain the VPS
- Apply operating-system updates and limit remote administration to the access you need.
- Configure a local firewall. OVHcloud’s Edge Network Firewall handles traffic from outside its network; OVHcloud also advises configuring a local firewall. Read OVHcloud’s firewall guidance.
- Check what snapshot or automated backup options are available for the exact VPS product. Availability depends on the service. See OVHcloud’s VPS security guidance.
- Protect the stream key as a credential and avoid placing it in public or broadly accessible files.
