To limit one app to a daily allowance, open Settings > Digital Wellbeing (sometimes called Digital Wellbeing & parental controls) and set an App timer. To pause selected apps and their notifications during a work session, use Focus mode instead.
Set a daily timer for an Android app
- Open your phone’s Settings app.
- Tap Digital Wellbeing or Digital Wellbeing & parental controls.
- Tap App timers.
- Tap the timer control beside the app you want to limit.
- Choose the daily allowance, then tap OK.
When the allowance runs out, Android closes the app and dims its icon. The timer resets at midnight. To use the app again before then, return to App timers and delete that app’s timer.

Pause apps with Focus mode
- Open Settings > Digital Wellbeing.
- Tap Focus mode and select the apps you want paused.
- Tap Turn on now to start immediately, or Set a schedule to choose when it should start automatically.
- When you need temporary access, tap Take a break and choose a duration.
While Focus mode is on, selected apps cannot be used and their notifications are paused. Some Android devices also let you add Focus mode to Quick Settings.

Choose the right screen-time control

Google documents Bedtime mode as a separate option from app timers and Focus mode. Available settings can depend on the phone.

If the setting is missing or behaves differently
- Search Settings: Search for “Digital Wellbeing” if the menu is not where expected. Google cautions that steps can vary by device.
- Check the device and Android version: Menu names and available controls may differ, and Google’s instructions do not establish that every Android device exposes the same options.
- Consider the account: Google says app timers may not work with some work or school accounts.
Make an app limit harder to change
Google documents an App limits PIN under Digital Wellbeing and App limits. Google advises not sharing the PIN and notes that a zero-minute limit can block another user’s access to an app on that device. This is a device setting, not a guarantee that another user cannot get around the limit.
