When Apple Passwords is the better fit
Apple Passwords is a sensible choice if your everyday devices are iPhone, iPad, and Mac, and its built-in autofill and iCloud Keychain syncing cover your needs. Apple says the app stores passwords, passkeys, Wi-Fi passwords, and verification codes; it can also flag weak, reused, or compromised passwords. You can share credentials with a group or send an individual credential using AirDrop. Apple’s support page ties the standalone Passwords experience to iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia, and visionOS 2; check the requirements for your installed operating system.

Apple also documents access on Windows through iCloud for Windows using Chrome or Edge. That is useful for an occasional Windows computer, but it is not the same as choosing a manager with a listed app and broad browser extensions across platforms.

Is Apple’s iCloud Keychain a good password manager?
For someone whose devices and browser habits fit Apple’s ecosystem, it can be a good password manager: it handles common credential types, autofill, syncing, and basic security recommendations. The main limitation in this comparison is fit outside Apple’s ecosystem, especially if you need a wider selection of browser extensions or more elaborate vault organization.

When 1Password is the better fit
1Password makes more sense when credentials need to follow you across Apple, Windows, Android, or Linux devices, or when you rely on Firefox or another browser beyond Apple’s documented Windows options. Its product materials list apps for major desktop and mobile platforms, browser extensions, password and passkey storage, family vaults, temporary sharing links, and Watchtower alerts. These are features described by the provider, not independent findings about usability or alert accuracy. See 1Password’s product details.
Its vault approach may also suit households or individuals who want to keep work, personal, and shared credentials organized separately. Consider whether those added choices solve a real problem for you; if Apple Passwords already covers your devices and sharing, the subscription may add little practical value.

What do the security claims mean?
Both companies describe encrypted credential storage and sharing. Apple’s Apple Platform Security guide says iCloud Keychain syncs passwords and passkeys among supported Apple devices without exposing them to Apple. 1Password describes its “dual-key model” as preventing the company from seeing exactly what a user has saved. These are each provider’s descriptions of its own design, not a side-by-side independent audit or proof that one manager is categorically safer. Apple Platform Security · 1Password security
Apple says its compromised-password check does not send actual passwords to Apple and that it does not retain the calculated information used for those checks. Apple’s privacy explanation That is useful detail about Apple’s stated implementation, but it does not establish how either service performs in every threat scenario. Choose based on the devices you protect, how you secure account access, and what recovery options you are comfortable managing.

Passkeys are credentials based on public/private cryptographic key pairs and are tied to the site or app for which they were created. Apple says its iCloud Keychain passkeys are end-to-end encrypted and that passkeys can be securely imported and exported between password managers. Apple Passwords is built into Apple’s ecosystem rather than sold as a separate password-manager subscription. That makes it an economical fit if its feature and platform limits are acceptable; it does not make it the better choice for someone who needs 1Password’s broader coverage.
Should you switch from Apple Passwords to 1Password?
Switch only after checking which data will and will not move. 1Password’s documented iCloud Passwords import workflow requires a Mac with Safari 15 or later; it does not offer Windows export in that workflow. The import covers passwords, not passkeys, cards, addresses, or other information. 1Password’s migration guide
- Inventory your records. Identify passkeys, payment cards, addresses, and other items that are not ordinary passwords, so you can plan how to handle them separately.
- Export on a compatible Mac. Follow the official workflow on a Mac with Safari 15 or later. The export file is an unencrypted CSV; 1Password recommends temporarily disabling backup software before exporting.
- Import and verify. Check that destination passwords are present and usable. Keep a safe recovery route to your accounts while confirming the new setup.
- Remove the export file carefully. Delete the unencrypted CSV after import. Do not delete source credentials until you have verified the destination; the migration guide warns that deletion is permanent.
If you rely on many passkeys or non-password records, treat the change as a staged transition rather than expecting a single export to carry everything across.
