How to Set an SD Card as the Default Camera Storage on Samsung

Use Camera > Settings > Storage location > SD card on a compatible Samsung Galaxy. Learn what to check if the setting is missing and how to choose a card for your model.

On a Samsung Galaxy with a microSD slot, insert a compatible card, then open Camera > Settings > Storage location and select SD card. The option appears only when the phone supports microSD and a card is inserted; menu labels can vary by model, software version, and carrier.

Set the Camera app to save new photos and videos to the SD card

  1. Check compatibility. Confirm that your exact Galaxy model has a microSD slot and supports the card’s capacity. Slot availability and limits vary by model; many newer Galaxy S and Z phones do not have a slot. See Samsung UK’s SD card guide and Samsung Germany’s model and capacity guidance.
  2. Insert the card. Use the phone’s microSD slot or supported SIM tray, following the tray markings and model instructions.
  3. Open Camera settings. Launch Camera and tap the Settings gear.
  4. Choose the destination. Tap Storage location, then select SD card. The usual route is Camera > Settings > Storage location > SD card. Samsung’s Android 11/12 instructions show the equivalent path as Apps > Camera > Settings > Storage location, with internal and external memory choices: Samsung Service Korea’s instructions.
  5. Verify with a new capture. Take a test photo, then look for it in Gallery or in the SD card view in My Files. This setting controls new Camera captures; it does not relocate photos and videos already stored on the phone.

If “Storage location” is missing

Samsung says the setting is not shown when no SD card is inserted or the device does not support one. Reseat the card and check the specifications or manual for your exact model. Galaxy family names alone are not enough to establish compatibility, since support can differ between models. Samsung’s screens may also vary by software version and carrier.

If the phone does not recognize an inserted card

  • Remove the card, check that it is seated correctly, and reinstall it.
  • Test the card in another device to help determine whether the issue is with the card or phone.
  • Formatting may help with card problems, but it permanently erases the card. Back up its contents before formatting. Follow Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance for your device.

What this setting does—and does not do

Choosing SD card changes where the Camera app saves captures. It does not redirect everything on the phone: Samsung UK says it is not currently possible to make all device activity save to an SD card, although some apps offer their own storage option. Downloads and other app data may still use internal storage. Changing the Camera setting also does not move existing media; Samsung documents separate ways to move items using Gallery or My Files in its SD card guide.

Choose a card that fits your Galaxy and your use

First check the exact device’s supported card type and maximum capacity in its specifications or manual. Do not assume a capacity limit from another Galaxy model applies to yours. Samsung’s published examples illustrate how much limits can differ: its Germany support page lists up to 2 TB for Galaxy Tab S11 and Galaxy A17/A26, and up to 1.5 TB for Galaxy Tab S10. These are model-specific manufacturer figures, not universal compatibility limits.

Use Samsung guidance
Still photography Samsung US says regular microSD or microSDHC cards can be sufficient for less demanding still photography. Compatibility still depends on the Galaxy model. Samsung US card guidance
High-resolution video Samsung US recommends microSDXC for its larger capacity and high-speed read/write capability. Check the phone’s supported capacity and card type before buying. Samsung US card guidance
4K video Samsung Germany recommends U3/V30 or higher for high write speed and to help avoid stuttering. This is video guidance, not a universal requirement for taking photos. Samsung Germany card guidance

Samsung UK says many supported devices can add up to 1 TB, but the maximum depends on the model. Samsung Germany notes that most Galaxy S models since the S21 generation, introduced in 2021, lack a microSD slot; confirm the exact model rather than relying on a family-wide rule. These are manufacturer-published compatibility details, not independent performance test results.
