To choose the image shown when a Squarespace page is shared, set a site-wide Social Sharing Logo or give an individual page its own Alternate Social Sharing Image. The page-specific image is set in that page’s Social settings on a computer; if you do not set one, Squarespace uses the site-wide image as the fallback.
Set a default social sharing image for your site
- Open Squarespace’s Social Sharing panel.
- Click + to upload an image or select one from your site library. You can also drag an image into the uploader.
- Click Save.
Squarespace calls this site-wide default the Social Sharing Logo. It is a simple choice when you want a consistent image to represent the site wherever an individual page does not have its own image. See Squarespace’s guide to adding social sharing images.

Set an image for one page or item
Use a computer for this edit: Squarespace’s app does not offer the alternate social image setting.

Squarespace calls this page-level override the Alternate Social Sharing Image. Its page-settings reference describes the relevant area as Social Image; in the page settings, look for the Social tab. The setting is available on pages and some collection items, including blog posts, products, events, and portfolio sub-pages in version 7.1. It is not available for gallery images or album tracks. See Squarespace’s Page settings reference.
#1 Best Overall
Choose between a site default and a page-specific image
| Setting | Scope | Best fit | Upkeep |
|---|---|---|---|
| Social Sharing Logo | Site-wide fallback | A consistent image when no page override is set | Lower: manage one default image |
| Alternate Social Sharing Image | One supported page or collection item | An image that better matches that page’s subject | Higher: set and maintain images on individual pages |
This is a practical distinction based on the settings’ documented scope: the default is easier to maintain, while overrides make shared pages more specific.
Pick an image and check its size
- Meet the relevant network’s current guidance. Squarespace states that images shared to Facebook must be at least 200 × 200 pixels. That is a Facebook minimum, not a universal ideal or a guarantee of a particular crop. Squarespace notes that Facebook’s preferred image sizes can change; check the current guidance for the network where you plan to share the page. See Squarespace’s SEO checklist for its image-size guidance.
- Keep the file reasonably light. Squarespace recommends images under 500 KB as part of keeping pages nimble, and recommends keeping the overall page size under 5 MB. These are performance recommendations, not social-platform preview specifications.
- Inspect the crop. No universal aspect-ratio recommendation is established here. Check the target network’s current requirements and preview how it crops your image rather than assuming one ratio will display identically everywhere.
Understand fallbacks, previews, and caching
If a page has no Alternate Social Sharing Image, Squarespace says the Social Sharing Logo appears instead. The final preview is not controlled solely by Squarespace: social networks decide what to display, and may choose or cache a preview differently. For layout pages, collection pages, and indexes, Squarespace’s documented LinkedIn image order starts with the alternate social image, then the site social sharing logo, then the site logo for homepages, and finally the network’s best guess. Collection items may also use a featured image, or a product’s first image. Gallery pages are an exception: they use the Social Sharing Logo. See Squarespace’s explanation of how content displays in social posts.

Troubleshoot a missing or outdated image
The wrong image appears
- Confirm that you saved the image in the intended page’s Social settings. A page override takes precedence over the site-wide default where supported.
- If no override is set, check the site-wide Social Sharing Logo.
- Allow for the possibility that the network selected another image or is showing a cached preview; Squarespace does not control the final post display.
Facebook still shows an old preview
Squarespace says Facebook may need to clear its cache and points users to the Facebook Debugger. Re-fetching there may help with a stale preview, but cannot guarantee that every platform will render the same image or crop.
You cannot find the page image setting
Open the page settings on a computer and look for the Social tab. The alternate-image setting is not available in the Squarespace app, and it does not apply to gallery images or album tracks.

Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to capture a page after updating its social image, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot or PDF with one GET request. Its clean-shot process accepts consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status. It also provides an MCP server for AI agents, with tools including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
