Choose software based on what your YouTube broadcast needs to do: use YouTube’s webcam or mobile option for a simple camera stream; choose an encoder such as OBS Studio or Streamlabs when you need gameplay or screen capture, multiple scenes, or external audio and video inputs. OBS is a strong fit for flexible, hands-on control; Streamlabs may suit creators who want creator tools such as alerts, widgets, and overlays bundled into its workflow. Test your actual setup before going live—compatible hardware is not automatically powerful enough for your chosen settings.
Start with the kind of stream you want to make
YouTube supports webcam, mobile-device, and encoder approaches. An encoder is useful when you need to share a screen or gameplay, connect external audio or video hardware, or produce a more involved show with multiple cameras and microphones. For a straightforward camera presentation without those needs, YouTube’s webcam or mobile route may be simpler than installing separate production software. - Simple camera presentation: Start by considering YouTube’s webcam or mobile streaming option.
- Gameplay or screen sharing: Use an encoder that can capture and compose those sources.
- Multiple scenes or external equipment: An encoder gives you tools to manage sources, audio, and transitions in a more controlled production.
Compare OBS Studio and Streamlabs
For desktop encoder software, OBS Studio and Streamlabs are useful options to assess. Their distinction is less about one being universally better and more about whether you want direct configuration or a more bundled set of creator tools.
Recommended Free Tools
| Decision | OBS Studio | Streamlabs |
|---|---|---|
| Approach | Free, open-source software with configurable transitions and broad platform support, according to the OBS Project. | Offers multiple YouTube workflows, including desktop software, an OBS plugin, mobile, browser-based Talk Studio, and console; its desktop product bundles tools such as alerts, widgets, and overlays, according to Streamlabs. |
| Best reason to consider it | You want open-source software and direct control over scene and source setup. | You value built-in alerts, widgets, or overlays and prefer a more bundled workflow. |
| System fit | Check the current build and requirements for your operating system and devices. | Streamlabs lists Windows and macOS support for its desktop product; check its current listing and requirements before installing. |
| Performance certainty | Neither choice guarantees smooth streaming on a particular computer. Test your intended resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene load on the actual machine. | |
Streamlabs product features and system availability can change, so verify the current listing before choosing. YouTube advises creators to “evaluate the products and decide which option makes the most sense for you or your business” on its encoder guidance page.

Use this decision path
- Keep it simple when the show is simple. If you only need a camera presentation and do not need advanced scenes or external hardware, try YouTube’s webcam or mobile option first.
- Choose an encoder for production control. If you need gameplay or screen capture, multiple scenes, or external audio/video equipment, compare OBS Studio with a bundled option such as Streamlabs.
- Pick the workflow that fits you. Prefer OBS when open-source software and customization suit your comfort level. Consider Streamlabs if its built-in alerts, widgets, and overlays are useful to your production.
- Rehearse with the real setup. Run a private or otherwise suitable test before an important broadcast using the actual sources and planned settings. Watch for dropped frames, audio-routing problems, and encoding overload.
- Handle special formats separately. If you need HDR, follow YouTube’s current encoder instructions and confirm that your computer has a suitable hardware HEVC encoder.
Check the computer and production hardware
Test workload, not just compatibility
A computer may meet a software’s compatibility requirements and still struggle with a demanding stream. OBS notes that CPU needs vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; its system requirements guidance does not make compatibility a performance guarantee. Test the planned combination on the machine you will use, with your real scenes and sources.
Plan for audio and video inputs
YouTube identifies microphones, webcams, and headphones among typical equipment for casual or gaming streams, with additional camera and audio inputs relevant to more advanced setups. An external microphone is optional, but worth considering when your production relies on external audio hardware. Confirm that the encoder sees each device and that the correct source is routed to the stream before broadcasting.

HDR requires a specific workflow
Do not assume ordinary encoder settings are sufficient for HDR. YouTube’s HDR live-streaming guidance specifies H.265/HEVC and describes particular OBS settings. Follow the current YouTube instructions and verify that your computer has an appropriate hardware HEVC encoder before building an HDR workflow around it.
Keep a pre-broadcast check short and practical
- Confirm the selected YouTube streaming route matches the show: webcam/mobile for simple camera work, encoder for capture or complex production.
- Check that the intended camera, microphone, headphones, and other inputs appear in the software and are routed correctly.
- Test the actual resolution, frame rate, encoder, scenes, and sources on the streaming computer.
- During rehearsal, look for dropped frames, audio-routing issues, or encoding overload before relying on the setup for an important broadcast.
- For HDR, validate the codec and configuration against YouTube’s current instructions.
