For quieter AIO cooling, keep the pump at a steady, manufacturer-approved speed and tune the radiator fans to ramp gradually as heat builds. If your cooler exposes coolant temperature as a control sensor, use it for the radiator-fan curve; it responds to the loop’s heat rather than every brief CPU temperature spike. There is no universal safe duty percentage or fan curve: wiring, BIOS options, cooler instructions and sustained-load temperatures all matter.

What the pump and radiator fans do

The pump circulates coolant between the CPU cold plate and radiator. Radiator fans push air through the radiator fins, carrying heat away from the liquid. This makes fan speed a practical noise-control lever, but reducing airflow too far can let coolant and CPU temperatures rise.

CORSAIR’s general guidance for its AIOs is to run the pump at a steady setting below 100%, typically around 70–80%, and control the fans using coolant temperature. It recommends its own Balanced preset for its AIOs. Treat these as vendor starting points, not universal settings or a guarantee of quiet operation.

CORSAIR also says that moving the pump from about 80% to 100% may change CPU temperature by only 1–2°C under an extreme workload. In a product-specific test on its Titan 240, CORSAIR reports that a pump at 2800 rpm and fans at 25% (420 rpm) coincided with coolant at 49°C; after it raised the fans to 1400 rpm using its Extreme preset, coolant temperature fell 10°C after 20 minutes. These are CORSAIR’s figures for that cooler and test, not independent measurements or a general prediction for other systems. The article does not state a publication date.

Set up the controls in a safe order

  1. Identify the cooler’s cables and control options

Check the cooler manual to see whether one cable groups the pump and fans or whether they have separate leads. The ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III 240 A-RGB manual documents both a shared-control arrangement and three separate PWM signals; individual control requires three 4-pin motherboard headers. Your cooler may be wired differently.

  2. Choose the correct header mode

In the motherboard’s fan-control settings, select PWM for a 4-pin device or DC for a 3-pin device when the board requires manual mode selection. ASUS documents this distinction in its ROG STRIX B650 Series BIOS manual. For the cited Liquid Freezer III 240 A-RGB, ARCTIC specifically instructs users to set the headers to PWM.

  3. Start with a steady pump setting

Use the cooler maker’s instructions first. As a general starting point for its own AIOs, CORSAIR recommends a fixed pump setting around 70–80%, below full speed. If the pump is noisy at that setting, do not assume a different percentage will work for every pump; consult the model’s guidance and check temperature behavior under load.

    • NATIVE OFFSET MOUNTING FOR INTEL AND AMD: Shifting the cold plate center towards the CPU hotspot ensures more efficient heat transfer

    • INTEGRATED CABLE MANAGEMENT: The PWM cables of the radiator fans are integrated in the sheathing of the hoses so that only a single visible cable is connected to the motherboard
  4. Make the radiator fans respond to heat

Where the cooler and motherboard expose coolant temperature as a sensor, use it as the radiator-fan control source and increase fan speed progressively as the coolant warms. This avoids tying every fan adjustment to brief CPU temperature fluctuations. Coolant sensing is not available on every board or cooler. The cited ASUS B650 BIOS manual lists CPU, motherboard, VRM, temperature-sensor or multiple sources for AIO-pump control; that list does not establish that every board exposes coolant temperature.

  5. Set response timing to avoid abrupt changes

BIOS step-up and step-down settings determine how quickly fan rotation changes. ASUS notes that a slower response can reduce noise but also slow heat dissipation. Avoid a long delay that leaves the fans slow during sustained heat; make adjustments in small steps and observe the system during the workloads you actually run.

  6. Check temperatures under sustained load

Do not judge a curve by idle noise alone. ASUS warns in its cited ROG STRIX B650 BIOS manual that inefficient fan or pump duty can cause CPU throttling, and advises 100% duty when CPU temperature exceeds 75°C in Manual mode. This is a caution for that manual’s context, not a universal temperature target or a substitute for your CPU and cooler specifications.

  7. Interpret pump RPM using the cooler’s own specifications

Reported tachometer speed may not equal actual pump speed. ARCTIC warns that the pump-speed reading for the cited Liquid Freezer III model is 50% above its real speed: 1500 RPM reported corresponds to 1000 RPM real. Check the manual before diagnosing a fault or comparing RPM with another cooler.

Choose a control approach that fits your hardware

Control approach What it offers What to check
Shared cable or grouped control One signal can control multiple cooler components together; the cited ARCTIC model supports simultaneous pump, VRM-fan and radiator-fan control through one cable. You may not be able to tune the pump and radiator fans independently. Check the exact cooler wiring and manual.
Separate PWM signals Allows independent control of the pump, VRM fan and radiator fans on the cited ARCTIC model. That arrangement requires three 4-pin motherboard headers. Check available headers and their configured modes.
Coolant-temperature fan control Lets radiator fans react to loop heat rather than each brief CPU temperature change; CORSAIR recommends this for its AIO guidance. Use it only if the cooler and motherboard actually provide coolant temperature as a selectable sensor.
Board-temperature or CPU-based control Can provide a control source when coolant temperature is not exposed. The cited ASUS B650 manual lists CPU, motherboard, VRM, temperature sensor or multiple sources for AIO-pump control. Sensor choices depend on the specific board and control header; a board’s listed options do not prove that every sensor is available to every cooler.

If separate control is needed but the motherboard lacks enough headers, a PWM hub may be an option only if it is compatible with the cooler connectors and motherboard, and its power design is suitable. Do not assume a hub provides independent pump control; that depends on its wiring and control implementation.

Diagnose rattling or bubbling separately from fan noise

A fan curve cannot fix every sound. To distinguish fan noise from pump or loop noise, CORSAIR suggests briefly setting the fans to 0% duty or unplugging them and checking whether the sound continues. Do this only briefly and avoid a sustained heat load while airflow is stopped.

If rattling or bubbling persists, trapped air may be involved. CORSAIR’s support article, updated July 6, 2026, advises ensuring the pump is not the loop’s highest point so air can collect in the radiator, and describes steps for moving bubbles through the loop. Follow the guidance for your installed cooler; ARCTIC’s manual also identifies mounting orientation as a possible factor in bubbling noise. A persistent sound may need model-specific troubleshooting rather than another fan-curve adjustment.
