Get the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, then use them as FFmpeg’s output destination. For a prerecorded Malayalam news loop, FFmpeg can repeat a local video file with -stream_loop -1; keeping it live around the clock also requires a reliable host, monitoring, and a recovery plan.
Before you start: check your YouTube channel
- Your channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days.
- If this is the first time you enable live streaming, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours.
- Have a prerecorded video file ready, along with an FFmpeg build that supports the encoders and output format you intend to use.
These requirements and setup steps are described in YouTube’s live-streaming tips and its encoder setup guide.

Get the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live, then open the Stream tab.
- Create a stream or select an existing one. You can create a custom stream key if you want to reuse settings.
- Copy both the displayed Stream URL and Stream key. YouTube describes keys as the password and address that tell an encoder where to send a feed and let YouTube accept it; see Manage live stream settings.
Keep the key private. Do not publish it in an article, put it in a public code repository, expose it in a screenshot, or share it in logs. If it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the old value in your encoder.
Set up FFmpeg to loop a video and send it to YouTube
This command is a starting template, not a tested command or a guarantee for every media file or FFmpeg build. Replace input.mp4 and STREAM_KEY. Use the exact ingest URL YouTube shows in Live Control Room; if it presents a different URL or protocol, follow that value. The example uses a common RTMPS endpoint pattern.

At 30 fps, that is a two-second interval; use a GOP calculated for your actual frame rate.- The output URL joins the ingest endpoint and key in a common FFmpeg pattern. Keep the key private, including when saving or sharing command history.
Check your local FFmpeg help and build support before relying on exact option behavior. Confirm that the file has the video and audio streams you expect, and that the chosen encoders and container accept them. If you are considering stream copy instead of re-encoding, test the actual output first.
Choose settings that fit the source and connection
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest. Its published encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant-bitrate encoding; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

Bitrate is not one-size-fits-all: match it to resolution, frame rate, codec, source quality, and sustainable upload capacity. For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube’s table lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 14 Mbps as the recommended video bitrate. The example’s 5 Mbps is the minimum for that specific setting, not the recommended value. Leave upload headroom: YouTube recommends 20% above your total stream bitrate. Its streaming tips also recommend testing, checking the preview, and monitoring quality.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteStart the stream and verify the preview
- Start FFmpeg only after checking the input path, stream URL, key, and selected encoding settings.
- Open the stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and check that video appears in the preview.
- Check that audio is present, synchronized, and at a suitable level before treating the stream as ready for viewers.
Keep a 24/7 loop healthy
Looping the file does not make the overall service resilient. A continuously running FFmpeg process depends on the host and network as well as the input file.

- Use a process supervisor or another tested restart plan for process failures.
- Monitor FFmpeg and YouTube’s stream health, and have a plan for network interruptions.
- Test recovery on the actual host, FFmpeg build, and connection before leaving the stream unattended. FFmpeg’s documentation describes FIFO muxer recovery options for temporary output failures; they are not a guarantee of seamless reconnection to YouTube.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A 24/7 broadcast exceeds that window, so do not assume YouTube will archive it as one complete video. If you need a complete local copy, plan separate recording and check YouTube’s current handling of long broadcasts; see the encoder guide.

Troubleshooting FFmpeg and YouTube ingest
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a feed | Wrong server URL or stream key, or a key that was reset | Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room. If the key was reset, update FFmpeg’s output destination. |
| FFmpeg rejects the input or exits immediately | Incorrect file path, missing streams, unsupported options, or unavailable encoder support | Confirm the input file exists, inspect its audio/video streams, and check the installed FFmpeg build’s help and encoder support. |
| Video or audio quality is poor or unstable | Settings do not suit the source, or upload capacity is insufficient | Match bitrate and frame rate to the source and connection, preserve upload headroom, then test and monitor the Live Control Room preview. |
| The stream stops after a host or network interruption | Looping only repeats the file; it does not supervise or restart FFmpeg | Use and test a process supervisor or recovery plan. Do not treat FFmpeg’s FIFO recovery options as a guarantee of seamless YouTube reconnection. |
| Malayalam text appears incorrectly or is hard to read | Font availability, rendering, or layout in the video asset | Check the produced video itself, including ticker text, subtitles at mobile sizes, and synchronization with narration. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a custom YouTube stream key with FFmpeg?
Yes. YouTube lets you create a custom key in Live Control Room; if you reset it, update FFmpeg with the new key.
Does the Malayalam language change the FFmpeg stream-key setup?
No. It affects production checks for the video, text, subtitles, and narration, not the ingest procedure.
