To play consecutive video clips in one OBS layout, use a VLC Video Source playlist and enable looping if you want it to repeat. To switch between different scenes automatically, use a compatible Advanced Scene Switcher macro. OBS Scene Collections organize scenes and sources; they do not schedule rotation by themselves.
Choose the kind of rotation you need

OBS describes Scene Collections as saving the scenes and sources added to them. They are separate from OBS Profiles, which hold most output settings. Switching or saving a collection is not the same as scheduling a playlist.

Play a playlist of clips in one scene
- Create or select a scene: In OBS, choose the scene that should display the clips.
- Add the playlist source: In the Sources panel, select + and choose VLC Video Source. Add a source name, then select the local media files for the playlist. OBS describes VLC Video Source as similar to Media Source, but able to hold a list of media items.
- Set playback behavior: Enable Loop Playlist if the list should start again after the last item. Enable Shuffle Playlist only if you want randomized order; the documented defaults are loop on and shuffle off.
- Check VLC installation: VLC must be installed for the source to work. OBS notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Check the scene: Start playback and verify the clip order, audio, and what appears when a clip ends. If the playlist is meant to repeat, confirm it returns to the first item.

Switch between different scenes automatically
Prepare the scenes
Create a separate scene for each layout or content segment you want OBS to show. A Scene Collection can keep those scenes and sources together for reuse, but it will not trigger transitions. Keep output configuration in mind separately: OBS Profiles hold most output settings.

Install and configure Advanced Scene Switcher
Advanced Scene Switcher automates OBS through macros: a condition determines when one or more actions run. For example, a macro can use a media or timing condition and a switch-scene action. The exact setup depends on your source types, scene design, and the event you want to detect.

The OBS forum listing reports Advanced Scene Switcher version 1.36.1, updated 2026-08-07, with OBS Studio 31.1.1 as its minimum version and Windows, macOS, and Linux support. These are listing details, not a guarantee that every plugin build works with every OBS installation. Build and verify the macro
- Open the plugin’s macro interface and create a macro for the transition you need.
- Choose a condition that corresponds to the desired media state or timing event.
- Add a switch-scene action and select the scene to show when the condition is met.
- Repeat for other transitions, ensuring each condition leads to the intended scene.
- Test transitions in OBS. If media should continue or resume when a scene is hidden and shown again, check the source’s visibility behavior so returning to a scene does not unexpectedly restart or stop playback.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
Scene automation changes the program output in OBS. It does not create, schedule, or start a YouTube broadcast. For an encoder-based broadcast, create or open the live stream in YouTube’s current Live setup flow, then configure OBS with the stream URL and stream key shown there. YouTube supports software and hardware encoders; OBS sends the finished program output to the encoder endpoint.

- In YouTube Studio, use the live-stream setup flow and select the encoder workflow.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key provided for that broadcast.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose the applicable YouTube service option, and enter or connect the stream details according to the current OBS interface.
- Start streaming from OBS and confirm YouTube receives the encoder signal before making the broadcast public or starting the event.

Test the full sequence before going live
- Play the entire playlist or scene sequence, including the transition at the end of the list.
- Listen for audio continuity, clipping, silence, or a source that continues playing behind another scene.
- Check transition timing and confirm each macro moves to the intended scene only when its condition is met.
- Verify loop and shuffle behavior matches your plan.
- Confirm YouTube receives the OBS stream and that the stream key and URL are correct.
- Check that your video and audio are authorized for streaming. Automated playback does not grant permission to use copyrighted material, and YouTube may apply its copyright policies.
- Observe what happens if a clip is missing or fails to play, then correct the playlist or source before broadcasting.
Troubleshooting common failures
