To connect a 24/7 VPS encoder to YouTube, copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, enter each in its matching encoder field, and start the feed. For a scheduled event, wait for the preview and click Go live. The key connects the feed; it does not keep a VPS process running or provide automatic recovery.
Before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to live stream. YouTube says a channel restricted from live streaming cannot use another channel to stream on YouTube; check current eligibility and limits in YouTube’s live-streaming getting-started guidance.
- A VPS running an encoder that can send a supported audio-video feed to YouTube.
- Access to YouTube Studio as the channel owner or a manager if you may need to reset the key.
YouTube’s instructions do not prescribe a VPS distribution, encoder package, firewall configuration, service manager, or watchdog. Those depend on your host and software; setting the key alone does not guarantee uninterrupted operation.
Create or schedule the YouTube stream
- Open YouTube Studio and choose Create > Go Live.
- For an immediate encoder stream, open the Stream tab. Create a stream if YouTube prompts you to.
- For a planned event, go to Manage > Schedule stream and set up the event.
- In the stream’s settings, copy the Stream URL and Stream key. Keep the key private: YouTube describes stream keys as like the stream’s password and address. Put it only in the intended encoder configuration; do not publish it.
For recurring streams, you can reuse stream settings or create a custom key. YouTube’s help page reports limits of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key; check the current guidance because platform limits may change. Choose the server URL and enter the key in your VPS encoder
Prefer RTMPS when supported
YouTube may show an ordinary RTMP URL by default. If your encoder supports RTMPS, retrieve the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and use that instead. RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL. Follow YouTube’s RTMPS instructions for the URL and protocol; do not assume the ordinary RTMP address is interchangeable with the RTMPS one.

Match each value to its encoder field
- Open the VPS encoder’s stream or output settings.
- If it offers a YouTube preset, select it and enter the key in the preset’s key field.
- Otherwise, enter the copied server URL in the URL/server field and the copied key in the stream-key field. Follow the encoder’s own format; some encoders use separate RTMP(S) and key fields.
- Save the configuration without exposing the key in a public page, screenshot, shared log, or other public location.
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the resolution and frame rate you intend to send. YouTube recommends H.264 video and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. Its recommended keyframe interval is 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds. Available bitrate depends on the selected resolution and frame rate, so use the current table rather than treating one bitrate as suitable for every stream. Confirm that your encoder supports the chosen settings.
Start the feed and take the event live
- Start the encoder on the VPS so it sends video and audio to the copied YouTube URL using the key.
- For a scheduled stream, open the event in Live Control Room and wait for its preview to appear.
- When the preview is available, click Go live to start the viewer-facing event.
YouTube’s API documentation distinguishes a stream, the audio-video feed sent to YouTube, from a broadcast, the viewer-facing event. A feed can coexist with separate broadcasts, so connecting the encoder and managing an event are related but distinct tasks. See YouTube Live Streaming API: Understanding Broadcasts and Streams.

Protect or replace a stream key
If the key may have been exposed
- Reset the key in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- Replace the old key with the new one in the VPS encoder configuration.
- Restart or reconnect the encoder as needed, then confirm that YouTube receives the feed.
YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset a stream key. If YouTube rejects the key, check that the encoder is using the current one rather than a previous value. See Manage live stream settings.
Keep a 24/7 VPS stream running
The stream key handles YouTube ingest, not VPS uptime. For a continuous feed, separately configure the encoder’s reconnect behavior, supervise the encoder process with a suitable method for your host, ensure the VPS has enough network capacity, and monitor YouTube ingest. The right process manager, watchdog, and recovery policy depend on the encoder and VPS; YouTube’s key-setup guidance does not specify them.

End a scheduled event cleanly
Ending a scheduled stream may involve ending the YouTube event as well as stopping the encoder, depending on the Studio flow. Verify both the event state in Live Control Room and the encoder process when shutting down.
Check archive expectations
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on automatic archiving for a continuous stream that runs longer than 12 hours. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Troubleshooting: no preview or failed connection
