To stream a playlist with a still image between clips, build one continuous timeline in FFmpeg: put each video and each image interstitial in sequence, give every still an explicit duration, and encode the result using YouTube Live’s current ingest settings. Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer only when the video inputs have compatible streams; if you need to normalize or transform clips, use a filter-based workflow that re-encodes. There is no universal drop-in command for arbitrary playlists because input formats and timeline requirements vary.
Choose the FFmpeg approach before building the playlist
First inspect the files you plan to use: stream count, codecs, time bases, frame size, frame rate, audio layout, and duration metadata. The FFmpeg concat demuxer expects compatible streams, codecs, and time bases across its inputs. Incorrect duration metadata can also lead to timestamp artifacts. See the FFmpeg documentation.

FFmpeg’s concat FAQ distinguishes the demuxer from the filter and recommends considering the filter when re-encoding is required. If clips have different resolutions, frame rates, audio streams, or other relevant properties, normalize them as part of the filter workflow rather than assuming the demuxer will join them cleanly.
Build a timeline that includes timed image segments
1. Decide where the still appears and for how long
Choose whether the same image follows every clip or appears only at selected boundaries, and set a duration for each appearance. The duration is a creative decision, not a YouTube requirement. An image input must be made into a video segment with an explicit duration; simply looping an image input does not by itself insert it into a playlist at the right points.

2. Prepare the video and image segments
FFmpeg documents image inputs and looping options in its all-in-one documentation. Prepare the still as a segment with the intended duration and output-compatible properties. Then arrange that segment alongside the video segments in sequence, using a concat method suited to their stream compatibility and whether you need re-encoding.
For a compatible playlist, a concat-demuxer file list can represent sequential video entries. When the still or videos need format changes, use a filter-based timeline and encode a consistent output. The exact filter graph or intermediate-file steps depend on the input streams, chosen output format, audio handling, and where the stills belong. The FFmpeg documentation does not establish one universal command that inserts a timed still after every arbitrary playlist item, so validate the graph against your files before relying on it for a live broadcast.
3. Check audio and timing
Decide whether audio continues under each still, fades out, or is silent during the interstitial. Make that behavior explicit in the timeline. Check source duration metadata, segment boundaries, and the intended still duration; duration errors can affect timestamps when using the concat demuxer.

Configure the outgoing stream for YouTube Live
Use YouTube’s live encoder guidance, not its upload recommendations. YouTube’s live encoder settings list RTMP and RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video options, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR) encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval with a four-second maximum. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest.
Match the bitrate to the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate using YouTube’s live bitrate table. As examples from that rolling guidance accessed in 2026, YouTube recommends H.264 at 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps, and 8 Mbps for 720p at either 30 or 60 fps. These are YouTube recommendations, not measurements of a particular FFmpeg setup; check the current table before configuring a stream. The same page gives AAC and 128 Kbps stereo as recommended advanced audio guidance.
YouTube Help advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” For a sustained connection, YouTube’s Streaming tips recommend upload bandwidth with 20% headroom above the stream bitrate. That margin helps accommodate network variation; it does not guarantee a stable connection.

Connect FFmpeg to your YouTube channel safely
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Create or select the live stream and copy its stream URL and stream key from YouTube’s live-stream setup.
- Keep the key private. Treat the stream key like a password. Do not paste a real key into a public script, command example, forum post, or screen recording. Use the account-specific values from Live Control Room in your FFmpeg output configuration.
- Set the output for the selected ingest. Configure the protocol, video and audio codecs, CBR bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and keyframe interval to match YouTube’s live guidance and your timeline output.
- Test with the actual playlist. Start a private or otherwise appropriate test and confirm YouTube receives the stream before making it public.
Test the timeline and monitor stream health
- Confirm every clip appears in the intended order and the still displays for its chosen duration.
- Watch transitions for black frames, frozen frames, timestamp jumps, or unexpected gaps.
- Check audio continuity, including what happens while the image is displayed.
- Watch YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and messages during the test and event.
- Check that the sending connection sustains the configured bitrate with the recommended bandwidth headroom.
YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring its stream health messages. A successful short test cannot guarantee that a long stream or an unstable connection will remain uninterrupted.
Troubleshoot common failures
The concat demuxer rejects files or playback breaks between clips
Check whether the inputs have compatible streams, codecs, and time bases. If they differ, normalize and re-encode through a concat-filter workflow rather than treating arbitrary media as compatible. Also inspect duration metadata, since incorrect durations can cause artifacts.
The static image appears only once, runs too long, or is missing
Make sure the image is represented as a video segment with an explicit duration and inserted at each intended timeline position. A looped image input alone does not define where the image belongs in the playlist. Validate the resulting timeline in a test before broadcasting.

YouTube reports poor stream health or ingest problems
Compare the actual output codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio configuration with the current YouTube live encoder guidance. Confirm the stream URL and key are the current values from Live Control Room, then check upload capacity and leave the recommended bandwidth headroom.
The stream key is exposed
Do not continue using a key that has been posted or otherwise exposed. Manage or replace it through YouTube Live Control Room, then update the FFmpeg configuration with the new account-specific key.
