Choose a rate that fits both YouTube’s recommendation for your resolution, frame rate, and codec and the upload capacity your connection can reliably sustain. Use CBR, set a two-second keyframe interval, then test and monitor stream health.
Where to lower the bitrate in OBS
- In OBS, open Settings → Output.
- Find Video Bitrate in the streaming output controls and enter a lower value, in Kbps. If Output is set to Advanced mode, use the Streaming section.
- Select Apply, then OK. Start a representative test stream and check OBS’s dropped-frame indicator and YouTube’s stream-health messages.
OBS recommends lowering this setting when troubleshooting dropped frames or intermittent disconnections. The label or layout can vary slightly by OBS version; OBS’s connection troubleshooting page is dated 2024-09-30: OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting.

What bitrate should you use for YouTube Live?
There is no single best value. YouTube’s current Help table gives recommended video bitrates by ingestion codec, resolution, and frame rate. These are recommendations, not guarantees of smooth streaming. YouTube does not state a publication year for the table, so confirm its current guidance before a later broadcast: YouTube Live encoder settings.

For example, YouTube Help recommends 12 Mbps for AV1/H.265 or 17 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p60; at 1080p30, it recommends 10 Mbps or 14 Mbps, respectively. Its table also lists minimums: at 1080p60, 4 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 6 Mbps for H.264. Minimums are not the recommended targets.

Match the recommendation to the stream you are sending
Use the row for the resolution and frame rate actually sent to YouTube, and the column for the ingestion codec OBS uses. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported video codecs and supports frame rates up to 60 fps. A higher resolution or frame rate is not automatically better if your connection cannot sustain its recommended bitrate.
Make sure the connection can carry it
YouTube advises leaving 20% of available upload bandwidth unused. The stream’s total bitrate must fit the upload capacity available to it, not just the connection’s advertised maximum; other users and applications on a shared home or office network may consume part of that capacity. OBS’s troubleshooting guidance suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point when diagnosing connection-related dropped frames. Treat that as troubleshooting advice, not a universal formula: YouTube’s headroom guidance, network consistency, and other traffic still matter. Audio bitrate is separate from the OBS Video Bitrate limit. The specific OBS controls available can depend on the selected encoder and mode; YouTube’s figures are its recommendations, not proof that every encoder exposes identical labels.
Test before the broadcast
- Use the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate you plan to use for the actual stream.
- Send audio and motion similar to the planned content. A static scene alone may not reveal problems that arise with active video or audio.
- Check OBS for dropped frames and watch YouTube’s stream-health messages during the test.
- If the test is stable, keep the same settings for the broadcast and continue monitoring.

Why OBS drops frames and what to try
OBS says dropped frames can mean the connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Lowering the video bitrate is a sensible first adjustment, but it will not solve every network or ingest problem.
- Dropped frames rise or the connection indicator turns yellow or red: Lower Settings → Output → Video Bitrate, then test again. Check whether other devices or applications are using upload bandwidth.
- The connection is still unreliable at a lower rate: Investigate network congestion or instability. OBS also identifies a different ingest server, security software, VPNs, and network conditions as possible contributors.
- You need a fallback while diagnosing: OBS offers dynamic bitrate under Settings → Advanced → Network. It can lower quality by reducing bitrate when the connection struggles; OBS notes that this does not fix the underlying connection problem.
Do not treat a lower bitrate as a guarantee: an unstable connection can still interrupt a stream even when the configured rate appears to fit its capacity. See OBS’s troubleshooting page.
