Start near 78°F, then raise or lower the setting to the highest temperature that stays comfortable for everyone in the room. On humid days, choose low fan speed if your window AC offers it; when available, Energy Saver mode can limit fan operation while the compressor is off. The best controls and their behavior vary by model, so use the unit’s manual for exact settings.
What temperature should you set a window AC to?
ENERGY STAR advises setting the thermostat as high as is comfortable, typically 78°F. Treat 78°F as a starting point, not a universal comfort target: adjust it for the people in the room and the conditions rather than forcing an uncomfortable setting. A higher comfortable target can reduce how long the unit needs to cool.

Keep lamps and televisions away from the area around the AC thermostat. Heat from nearby electronics or lighting can affect the thermostat and make the unit run longer.
What fan speed should you use?
On humid days, set the AC fan to low if the unit provides that option. ENERGY STAR explains that slower air movement removes more moisture. Fan labels and available speeds differ between models, so check the manual if the controls are unclear.

If you want cooled air to reach more of the room, ENERGY STAR suggests using an extra fan to circulate it. That can help distribute the air without changing the AC’s fan-speed setting.
Should you use Energy Saver or Eco mode?
If your unit has Energy Saver mode, try it and see whether its cycling works for the room. ENERGY STAR says the mode improves efficiency by limiting fan operation when the compressor is off; you can override it. Some models may label or implement this feature differently, and not every existing window AC has it. Consult the manual for what the mode does on your unit.

Keep airflow and installation in good shape
Clean the filter as directed
A clogged filter restricts airflow, which can reduce efficiency and the unit’s ability to cool effectively, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Clean or replace the filter at the interval and in the manner specified in your AC’s manual.

Install and seal the unit according to its instructions. ENERGY STAR warns that an improperly installed room AC can leak as much air as a 6-square-inch hole, adding to energy costs and reducing comfort. The correct installation details depend on the model and window.
