For Playwright MCP, set browser.contextOptions.timezoneId to Asia/Kolkata in the server’s JSON configuration, then launch the server with that file. This emulates the timezone in browser pages; it does not change the MCP server’s Node.js process or a test runner’s timezone.
Configure Playwright MCP to use Asia/Kolkata
Create a JSON file such as playwright.config.json and put the timezone under browser.contextOptions. The option is Playwright’s browser-context timezone setting, documented as changing “the timezone of the context.”

Launch the server with the configuration file
From the directory containing the file, start Playwright MCP with:

Intl.DateTimeFormat().resolvedOptions().timeZoneThe second expression should return Asia/Kolkata. The first shows how the current instant is rendered in the emulated local timezone. Playwright’s timezone emulation applies to browser contexts, as described in its emulation documentation.
Browser timezone and process timezone are different
timezoneId affects web pages running in the configured browser context. It does not set the timezone of the MCP server’s Node.js process or a test runner. Playwright documents TZ as the environment variable for changing the test runner’s timezone; that is separate from browser-context emulation. Do not substitute a process-level timezone setting when the goal is to make a website behave as if its visitor is in Kolkata.
Configuration details and troubleshooting
Use a supported timezone identifier
Set the value exactly to Asia/Kolkata. Playwright accepts supported ICU timezone IDs. If the installed browser or runtime rejects it, check the installed Playwright and browser versions and confirm the supported identifiers for that environment in the BrowserType API documentation.

Check for a higher-precedence override
Playwright MCP configuration can come from a config file, environment variables, and command-line arguments; command-line arguments have the highest precedence. If the page still reports another timezone, inspect the server launch arguments and environment for an overriding value, then restart the server. The precedence rules are listed in Playwright MCP’s configuration options.

@playwright/mcp@latest tracks a moving package version. For a repeatable setup, pin the version you intend to use and check the configuration documentation for that release before relying on a particular option or behavior.
Do not assume other MCP servers share this schema
browser.contextOptions.timezoneId is the documented Playwright MCP configuration path, not a universal MCP setting.
