To prevent dead air in a 24/7 bhajan stream, make the automation switch to a valid audio fallback when a playlist or live source fails. In Liquidsoap, a fallback can move from the main source to a local emergency recording; mksafe alone instead supplies silence when its input becomes unavailable. This protects against source failure, but it cannot remove quiet already encoded at the beginning or end of a song.
First find out where the silence starts
A continuous stream has three distinct stages: the audio generator or automation, the streaming server that receives its output, and the listener’s player. Check them separately before changing settings. If the automation is producing audio but listeners do not hear it, changing song transitions may not address the fault.

- A pause at nearly every song change: inspect the audio files for quiet at their beginnings or endings, then check how the automation prepares and switches tracks. The Liquidsoap references describe source composition and fallback, but do not establish a universal gapless-playback setting.
- Only certain songs fail or pause: validate those files and their playlist entries. A playlist can fail if a file is invalid or a valid next file cannot be prepared in time.
- The stream goes silent when a live source disconnects: route live input through a fallback to the playlist, with an emergency source behind it if the playlist can also fail.
- The automation runs but listeners hear nothing: check generator output, server ingestion, and player compatibility as separate links in the chain.
These distinctions matter: source fallback can cover an unavailable file or disconnected live input, but not silence inside a recording, a stopped automation process, a server outage, or a listener-side connection problem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse emergency audio instead of silence as the fallback
Liquidsoap’s Quickstart documents the pattern fallback([your_fallible_source_here, single("failure.ogg")]). The first source is tried first; if it is unavailable, the fallback can play the local file. The documentation describes a valid local single file as an infallible source. Choose an accessible, valid emergency recording—such as a short licensed bhajan or station identification, if appropriate to the channel—and confirm the automation can read it.

Do not use mksafe by itself to solve audible dead air. The Liquidsoap Quickstart explains that mksafe makes a source infallible by streaming silence when the input becomes unavailable. That can keep an output from failing, but it does not give listeners music.
A source-level fallback only helps while the automation process and the rest of the delivery chain are functioning. It cannot compensate for a failed process, server, network path, or listener connection.

Keep playlist and live audio in one fallback plan
If the stream sometimes uses a live source as well as recorded bhajans, make the source priority explicit. Liquidsoap’s Cookbook example uses input.harbor, a playlist, and an emergency file in fallback(track_sensitive=false, [live, playlist, emergency]). This expresses the order live audio → playlist → emergency recording. The input.harbor reference says the live source is available only while a source client is connected, and shows the playlist resuming after disconnection.
Adapt the priority and transition behavior to the channel’s needs, and verify the syntax against the Liquidsoap release actually installed. The Quickstart and technical pages cited here are development documentation marked 2.5.x; the Cookbook page is labeled latest, so examples may not match every deployed build.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
Decide whether a reconnection pause is acceptable
The Cookbook includes an optional five-second silence on a transition out of live input, giving an unstable client time to reconnect. That is a specific recovery tactic, not a fix for gaps between recorded songs. It deliberately introduces silence, so omit it when uninterrupted devotional music is more important than waiting for a live source to return.
Check track files and playlist readiness
- Test the affected recordings: listen to the start and end of each file that produces a gap. If quiet is present in the file itself, source fallback will not remove it; edit or replace the file if your rights and workflow allow.
- Verify playlist entries: check that each path points to an existing, readable, valid audio file. Remote files can also be unreachable, so a local emergency recording is a more dependable fallback asset.
- Confirm the next track can be prepared: Liquidsoap documents playlist failure when it cannot prepare a valid file in time. If only particular transitions are affected, focus on those files and entries before changing stream-wide settings.
- Test the emergency branch deliberately: temporarily make the main source unavailable in a controlled test and confirm the intended fallback audio is heard. Restore the main source afterward and verify normal priority.
Choose a codec for compatibility, not to cure gaps
Liquidsoap’s encoding guide says the output encoder controls codec, bitrate, channels, and related settings. Choose a format supported by the intended listeners’ players: the guide describes MP3 as broadly compatible and notes Opus and Vorbis support in modern browsers. It does not claim that switching codecs fixes playlist timing or song-transition gaps, so change the encoder only when compatibility or playback support is the problem.

Compare the documented continuity strategies
| Strategy | What it covers | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
mksafe |
Keeps an unavailable source from stopping output by supplying silence. | The output continues, but the listener still hears silence. |
| Fallback to emergency audio | Switches from an unavailable source or playlist to a valid security file. | Requires a prepared, accessible recording; does not repair a stopped process or server. |
| Live input with playlist fallback | Prioritizes live audio, then returns to playlist audio when the live client disconnects. | Requires correct source priority and transitions; add an emergency source if the playlist might fail. |
| Short transition silence | Allows time for an unstable live client to reconnect in the Cookbook example. | Intentionally creates silence and does not address ordinary gaps between recorded tracks. |
Troubleshoot in this order
- Record the failure pattern: note whether silence occurs at every transition, only on certain files, after a live disconnect, or across the entire output.
- Inspect files and playlist paths: fix invalid media, missing files, inaccessible remote sources, or quiet embedded in the recording.
- Confirm source priority and fallback: ensure the intended next source is available and that the emergency recording is valid and readable.
- Check each delivery stage: confirm audio leaves the generator, reaches the server, and is playable by the listener’s chosen player.
- Check the installed Liquidsoap version: validate operators and parameters against that build before deploying configuration examples.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your bhajan stream is a YouTube channel built from uploaded recordings, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so a computer at home does not have to stay on. This is not a Liquidsoap fallback configuration and does not stream live camera input.
- Nothing has to stay running at home; StreamNeo keeps the YouTube stream going from the cloud.
- Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
