Use Settings > Apps > Default apps to assign a third-party file manager to the file extensions and link types it supports. You can also use the manager’s own Set as default option when it provides one. This changes registered Windows associations; it does not guarantee that every folder shortcut, shell command, Open dialog, or Save dialog will stop using File Explorer.
That distinction matters because Windows 11 does not expose one universal “replace File Explorer everywhere” switch. Microsoft’s documented model is per file type, link type, and application, with the available choices determined by what an app registers with Windows. See Microsoft’s current instructions for changing default apps and its default-app platform documentation.

What “default file manager” means in Windows 11
In everyday language, setting a default file manager sounds like choosing one replacement for File Explorer. Windows implements defaults more narrowly. An application registers the file and link types it can handle, and you select the preferred handler for those types through Windows’ default-app controls. A manager may additionally offer its own integration for opening folders, but that is an app feature rather than proof of a system-wide takeover.

Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor example, a manager might register document extensions, archive formats, image files, or particular link schemes. Windows can then send those registered launches to the manager you select. Another program may still use its own file-picker component, and a Windows feature that explicitly invokes File Explorer may continue to do so. Microsoft says apps can register as handlers for the types they support and that users change those choices through Windows system UI.

Use the Settings interface rather than a registry script or a utility that claims to force protected defaults.
Before you change anything
- Install the manager. Download and install the application you intend to use, then launch it once. An app generally must be installed and registered before Windows can show it as a handler.
- Know the workflow you want to change. Decide whether you care about a particular file type, a link type, opening folders from the desktop, or a specific application’s Open and Save windows. These routes may not use the same association.
- Keep a fallback. Do not remove File Explorer or disable Windows components while testing. You may need it for a shell location or a dialog that your chosen manager does not handle.
- Check the manager’s documentation. Look for wording such as Set as default file manager, Default applications, or Windows integration. The option is not required by Windows, so many managers will not provide it.
Method 1: use the manager’s own “set as default” control
Some third-party managers provide a guided setup that asks Windows to associate supported types with the app. If yours has that option, it is often the quickest way to see the associations the developer expects you to use.
- Open the installed file manager.
- Open its Settings, Preferences, or Help area.
- Find an option similar to Set as default file manager and select it.
- Approve any Windows confirmation or follow the Settings link the app opens.
- Review the associations before accepting them. Select only the types and links you actually want redirected.
- Open a test file or location after the setup finishes.
The exact wording and scope depend on the application and its version. Windows Central’s guide to the Files app, dated November 14, 2023, describes an in-app option for making Files the default manager; that report is an example of an app-specific convenience, not a promise that every manager exposes the same control. You can read the example at Windows Central’s Files guide.

Windows’ supported user workflow is in Settings > Apps > Default apps. Microsoft documents two ways to reach an association: search for a file or link type, or select an application and edit the types registered to it.

Change one file extension or link type
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Default apps.
- Use the search box to enter the extension or link type you want to change. Enter the type shown by Windows, such as a file extension, rather than the name of a folder.
- Select the result.
- Choose the third-party manager from the list of available handlers and confirm the change if Windows asks.
- Repeat for each additional type you want to route to that manager.
The list is limited to applications that have registered themselves for that type. If the manager does not appear, Windows is not currently offering it as a handler for that association.
Start with the application instead
- In Settings > Apps > Default apps, search for the manager’s name.
- Select the application entry.
- Review the file and link types Windows lists for that app.
- Select each type whose current handler you want to replace.
- Choose the manager and confirm the change.
This view is useful when you want to see the manager’s complete registration rather than guessing which extensions to search for. It also makes the boundary clear: you can edit only the types Windows says that application supports.
Which changes affect folders, files, and links?
| What you want to open | Where to configure it | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| A specific file extension | Default apps search for the extension, or the manager’s application page | Windows can assign the registered handler for that extension. |
| A link type or protocol | Default apps search for the link type, or the manager’s application page | Only an app registered for that link type will be offered. |
| A folder launched from a shortcut or shell location | Use the manager’s own integration if it provides one, then test the exact shortcut | A file association change alone does not establish that every Windows folder entry point will open in the manager. |
| An Open or Save dialog inside another program | Check that program’s settings and test its dialog | Programs can use their own workflows, so they may continue to show File Explorer or an embedded picker. |
Windows’ documentation describes defaults in terms of file types, link types, and applications. It does not promise a single switch that redirects every shell surface. Treat folder behavior as a separate test rather than assuming that assigning a document extension changed it.

Test a file association
- Locate a file with the extension you changed.
- Double-click it, or use Open with and observe the default choice.
- Confirm that the third-party manager opens the file or its containing location as intended.
Test a folder launch
- Open a desktop shortcut, taskbar shortcut, or pinned location that points to a folder.
- Check which application opens and whether it lands at the expected path.
- Repeat with a folder launched from the Start menu or another shell location you use regularly.
Test an application dialog
- Open a program in which you frequently choose Open or Save as.
- Invoke the dialog and check whether it uses the manager, File Explorer, or an embedded picker.
- Try a second program if this distinction is important; one application’s dialog does not prove how all others behave.
This testing approach follows the association model: each launch path can be implemented differently, and changing one registered type does not automatically rewrite another program’s interface.
If the manager or type is missing
The manager does not appear in Default apps
- Close Settings and launch the manager once, then return to Settings > Apps > Default apps.
- Install the latest version offered by the developer if the current installation did not register handlers.
- Search by the extension or link type instead of the app name. The app may be registered for some types but not presented as a general-purpose manager.
- Read the manager’s support documentation for Windows 11 registration requirements. Microsoft’s platform guidance says apps must register for the types they support before Windows can offer them.
The extension is not listed for the manager
That usually means the application has not declared support for that type. Windows will not let you assign an unregistered handler through the supported interface. Check whether the manager can open the format, whether an optional component must be installed, and whether the developer documents a registration step. Do not force the association by editing protected registry data.
The setting changes but a shortcut still opens File Explorer
Recheck the exact path you tested. A shortcut may invoke a shell command, a program-specific picker, or an integration that is independent of the file extension you changed. Look for an integration setting in the manager and in the application that launched the shortcut. If neither offers a supported override, retain File Explorer for that entry point and use the third-party manager for the associations it handles.

Why registry “force default” fixes are a bad idea
Windows 11 treats default-app selection as a protected user choice. Microsoft’s platform documentation says defaults must be set through Windows system UI, does not support registry-based changes for apps, and blocks programmatic changes that bypass user interaction. A script that edits protected association data may fail, be undone, or leave a partially registered state after an update.
The supported recovery path is straightforward: open Settings > Apps > Default apps, search for the affected type or app, and select a handler from the choices Windows presents. If the desired app is absent, repair or reinstall it according to the developer’s instructions instead of importing registry files from an unverified source.
What remains under File Explorer’s control?
Choosing a third-party handler is not the same as uninstalling or replacing File Explorer. Windows features and applications can retain explicit calls to File Explorer, and some programs use custom dialogs. Microsoft’s platform description is intentionally association-based, so the reliable promise is limited to the registered types and links you assign.
Microsoft’s Windows Experience Blog explains the design goal this way: “Third party applications running on Windows and Microsoft’s own apps and features will have access to methods for pinning to these key user experiences and access to directing users to change defaults.” The sentence is from Tali Roth and Aaron Grady’s March 17, 2023 post, A principled approach to app pinning and app defaults in Windows. It describes access to methods for requesting or directing users to change defaults, not an unconditional promise that every Windows surface will be redirected.

Setting defaults on organization-managed PCs
Personal computers should use the Settings procedure above. Organizations that need a consistent configuration have a separate administrative route: Microsoft documents the DefaultAssociationsConfiguration policy in the Policy CSP – ApplicationDefaults documentation.
The policy is documented for Windows Pro, Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions. Administrators prepare an associations file, commonly by exporting current associations with DISM, then deploy the policy through supported policy or MDM tooling. Microsoft says configured defaults apply at sign-in.
This is a device-management workflow, not a shortcut for a home user. It can standardize associations for enrolled devices, but it does not turn a third-party manager into a universal replacement for every File Explorer invocation. Administrators should follow the policy documentation for the exact XML, deployment channel, and edition requirements rather than copying an unverified command.
How to evaluate a third-party manager before making it default
If you are comparing managers, evaluate the behaviors that Windows’ association model leaves separate. No single checkbox tells you how every surface will behave.
| Evaluation question | Why it matters | How to check it |
|---|---|---|
| Which file and link types does it register? | Only registered types can be selected in Default apps. | Open the app’s Default apps entry and inspect the listed types. |
| Does it offer a clear default-setting option? | A guided option can save time, but its scope is app-specific. | Check Settings, Preferences, and Help for a default-manager control. |
| Can you navigate your usual folder workflow? | Folder shortcuts and shell locations may not follow file associations. | Test desktop, taskbar, Start-menu, and pinned-folder launches. |
| Which programs still show File Explorer? | Open and Save dialogs can be implemented by the calling application. | Test the programs in which you handle files most often. |
| Can you reverse the selection easily? | Association changes should be recoverable through Windows UI. | Confirm that each changed type can be assigned back to another listed handler. |
Recommended setup sequence
For most people, the least disruptive order is:
- Install and launch the manager.
- Read its current default-manager instructions and use them only if the scope is clear.
- Open Settings > Apps > Default apps and review the manager’s registered types.
- Change only the extensions and link types you need.
- Test files, folders, and application dialogs separately.
- Keep File Explorer available for Windows surfaces or programs that do not follow the associations.
This sequence uses Windows’ supported controls, exposes what the manager actually registered, and avoids assuming that one selection controls every place where Windows opens a path.
