Choose a selector that identifies the right button
A screenshot API can click a page element only if its browser can find that element. Inspect the target page’s markup or use your browser’s developer tools to choose a CSS selector that matches the intended button. An ID such as #button-close or a specific class such as button.show-details can work; check that it does not match several controls when only one should be clicked.

Selectors beginning with # need care in query strings because the hash character has URL meaning. Encode it as %23 when constructing a URL manually. Prefer a request library’s query-parameter encoder where available.

These interfaces are provider-specific, not a shared screenshot API standard. The examples below reflect vendor documentation accessed October 3, 2026; confirm the provider’s current endpoint, authentication, and options before integrating.

Build and verify the interaction sequence
- Confirm the selector. Inspect the rendered page and check that the selector points to the intended control, including in the page state where the API will load it.
- Send the click using the provider’s documented option. For a query parameter, encode reserved characters; for example, encode
#as%23. Let your HTTP client encode parameters when possible. - Wait for the actual result. A fixed delay can help with an animation or asynchronous update, but use a provider-supported condition—such as waiting for a selector—when it better expresses the desired state.
- Capture and inspect the result. Confirm that the screenshot shows the state after the click. A successful request does not by itself prove the intended control was found or that its effect finished.
For example, a button that opens a details panel may require waiting until a panel selector becomes visible. A button that navigates to another page may require waiting for the destination or a page-load condition. Choose the condition based on what that particular interaction changes.
Account for JavaScript rendering and asynchronous changes
The browser’s page-load event and the moment an application is visibly ready are not always the same. Cloudflare’s Browser Rendering guide notes that JavaScript-heavy pages and single-page applications can still be incomplete after default page-load behavior ends, and documents page-load controls and custom JavaScript: Cloudflare Browser Rendering documentation.

For local capture, shot-scraper can run custom JavaScript after the page-load event and before taking the screenshot; its documentation describes clicking links to open menus and waiting on a Promise: shot-scraper documentation. This is an alternative when you want capture to run in your own software environment rather than through a hosted API.

- The button was not clicked: Recheck the selector against the rendered page. Confirm that it uniquely identifies the intended control and that the control exists when the click runs.
- The selector contains a hash or other reserved character: Use the provider’s query encoder, or percent-encode reserved characters when building the URL manually. In a query parameter, encode
#as%23. - The click occurred, but content is missing: Add or adjust the post-click wait. If supported, wait for a specific element or state rather than relying only on a fixed delay.
- The page looks incomplete despite waiting for load: The site may render content asynchronously after the load event. Use the provider’s page-load controls or custom JavaScript if available, and wait for a visible, page-specific completion condition.
- The control is covered or changes state unexpectedly: Inspect the initial page state, including overlays and animations, then choose a selector and wait condition that match the state in which the click is meant to occur.
