When a screenshot API times out on a slow website, first identify whether navigation is failing or the page simply needs more time after it loads. Then choose the narrowest readiness condition that guarantees the content you need, and set a finite timeout within that provider’s documented limit. A longer timeout alone will not fix a page that never reaches its readiness condition.
What a screenshot API timeout actually limits
A timeout sets an upper bound on waiting; it does not make a page load faster. Depending on the API, it may bound navigation, browser rendering, or the full request. Check the provider’s documentation to learn which stage its setting covers before changing it.

Keep navigation timeout distinct from a post-load delay. Navigation timeout allows the browser to reach a specified readiness condition. A delay starts after that condition and gives late-arriving interface elements or animations additional time. Choose when the page is ready for a screenshot
The right condition depends on what must appear in the capture. Waiting for every network request to settle can be unnecessary—or never finish on pages with analytics, streaming, or persistent connections. A specific element can be a better signal when the required content is dynamic but identifiable.

Cloudflare Browser Run supports load, domcontentloaded, networkidle0, and networkidle2 as waitUntil options. Its documentation also recommends waiting for a specific selector when that is more efficient than waiting for all network activity to stop (Cloudflare Screenshot endpoint documentation). ScreenshotAPI.net describes domcontentloaded as a speed-oriented option and networkidle for dynamic applications (ScreenshotAPI.net documentation).
Set a finite, provider-specific timeout
Do not copy a timeout value from one API into another without checking its units, scope, default, and maximum. For example, Cloudflare’s documented gotoOptions.timeout has a maximum of 60000 milliseconds. ScreenshotAPI.net documents a default timeout of 100000 milliseconds for its own service. Those figures describe different providers’ settings, not a universal recommendation or directly comparable limit (Cloudflare API reference; ScreenshotAPI.net documentation).

Choose the shortest supported limit that gives the target a reasonable chance to reach the selected readiness condition. Keep a ceiling so slow or stuck pages do not hold your job indefinitely. The exact timeout, error response, and retry behavior depend on the API; check its current reference rather than assuming a standard.
Troubleshoot a screenshot API that keeps timing out
- Capture the failure details. Record the endpoint, request parameters, response status or error, elapsed time, and whether the failure appears to happen before or after navigation. Providers expose different diagnostic fields, so use what the specific API returns.
- Confirm what the timeout measures. Find out whether the setting limits navigation, rendering, or the whole request, and verify its units, default, and documented maximum.
- Relax the readiness condition only as far as the screenshot allows. If initial markup is sufficient, try
domcontentloaded. If a particular dynamic element matters, wait for that selector when supported. Use network idle only when network settling is a useful proxy for the content being ready. - Add a post-load delay only for a known late UI need. A short delay can accommodate an animation or late display after navigation succeeds. It does not repair a navigation that never reaches its readiness condition, and it adds time to every capture that uses it.
- Investigate failures that a longer timeout cannot solve. Check whether the target is available to the browser, whether access controls intervene, and whether a slow dependency is blocking the required content. Consult the provider’s documentation for its failure semantics and retry behavior; there is no universal retry schedule established across screenshot APIs.

Should I increase screenshot API timeout for every slow website?
No. First establish whether the chosen readiness condition is appropriate. Increasing the limit helps only when navigation or rendering needs more time and can still complete within the provider’s supported maximum.

Does networkidle mean the page is fully loaded?
Not necessarily. It indicates a network-activity condition, not proof that every piece of meaningful content is visible. A selector tied to the content you need can be a more direct readiness signal.
Will a post-load delay fix a navigation timeout?
No. The delay begins after the configured load condition has been met. If navigation never reaches that condition, investigate the condition, target availability, and dependencies instead.
