How to Set a Screenshot API Callback URL for Asynchronous Captures

Screenshot API callbacks are provider-specific. Learn how to configure the correct async field or endpoint, receive and verify the result, and troubleshoot delivery failures.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set the callback URL using the field or endpoint documented by the screenshot API operation that starts the capture. Your callback must be reachable by the provider, accept its documented request format, and return the required success response. Callback fields are not universal: ScreenshotOne and ScreenshotMAX use webhook_url, while Shotbot requires a dedicated callback endpoint and uses callback_url.

What a screenshot API callback does

An asynchronous capture lets the API accept a job before the screenshot is ready. The API’s initial response indicates that work has been queued; the completed result is delivered later to your application’s callback URL. Treat job acceptance and capture completion as separate events.

The exact request parameter, callback payload, acknowledgement, and signature method depend on the provider. Do not assume that a parameter called webhook_url works on every screenshot API operation.

Set up the callback in six steps

  1. Identify the provider and capture operation. Read the documentation for the endpoint that creates the screenshot job. Check whether it takes a callback field or requires a separate callback route.
  2. Create a receiver route. Make it accessible to the provider over the network, accept the documented HTTP method and content type, and return the success status the provider expects. A URL available only on your computer or private network cannot receive a provider’s server-to-server request. For local development, use an appropriate public development tunnel.
  3. Enable asynchronous capture and supply the callback setting. Copy the parameter name and route from the provider’s documentation. The examples below show why it matters: ScreenshotOne uses async=true with webhook_url; ScreenshotMAX accepts webhook_url with asynchronous processing; Shotbot requires its dedicated POST /capture/callback route and a callback_url in the JSON request.
  4. Handle the initial response separately. A queued response is not the finished screenshot. Store any job information your integration needs, then wait for the callback or use the provider’s documented status mechanism.
  5. Verify and parse the callback. Check any signature or shared secret before trusting the event. Read the provider’s documented content type and body format before writing the receiver.
  6. Test both outcomes. Confirm that the receiver returns the required 2xx acknowledgement and inspect a test delivery. Also test failures and consult the provider’s status or polling endpoint where documented.

Provider-specific callback behavior

Provider How to configure it Delivery and verification details
ScreenshotOne Its async guide uses async=true and webhook_url with the /take endpoint. The result is sent as a POST body. The guide’s example also uses response_type=json, store=true, and storage_return_location=true when the caller needs the uploaded file location. It documents the X-ScreenshotOne-Signature header and HMAC SHA-256 validation. The signing secret from the access page is different from the API key. ScreenshotOne async and webhook documentation.
ScreenshotMAX The guide accepts webhook_url with asynchronous processing. Async requests return HTTP 202 while work is queued. The receiver must be publicly accessible over HTTP or HTTPS, accept POST, and return a 2xx acknowledgement. Optional signing uses webhook_signed and the X-Screenshotmax-WebHook-Signature header. Calculate HMAC SHA-256 over the exact raw JSON body before parsing it. ScreenshotMAX webhook documentation.
Shotbot Callback captures use POST /capture/callback and include callback_url in the JSON. The ordinary POST /capture endpoint is polling-only; using callback_url there produces 400 callback_url_wrong_endpoint. Shotbot sends the result image as multipart data and sends status=ERR on failure. The receiver must return 2xx. An optional callback_secret is echoed back for the receiver to compare. Its status endpoint can help diagnose delivery: completed status indicates accepted delivery for a callback capture, while upload_failed indicates endpoint refusal. Shotbot API documentation.

Example: ScreenshotOne async request

This provider-specific cURL example follows ScreenshotOne’s documented query pattern. Replace the example callback host with a public HTTPS URL on your application and use your own API key. The endpoint must be implemented to accept the provider’s POST delivery.

  • Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)
  • Privacy with a Slide: The integrated webcam cover makes it easy to get total, reliable privacy when you're not on a video call
  • Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
  • Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works
curl -G "https://api.screenshotone.com/take"
  -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY
  --data-urlencode url=https://example.com
  -d async=true
  --data-urlencode webhook_url=https://your-domain.example/webhooks/screenshotone
  -d response_type=json
  -d store=true
  -d storage_return_location=true

Use the storage-related options when your workflow needs the uploaded file location, as in the provider’s example. The webhook signature secret is not the API key; retrieve and manage the signing secret separately, then validate the documented signature before processing the callback.

Choose receiver behavior from the payload contract

  • JSON-style callback: ScreenshotOne and ScreenshotMAX document JSON-style request bodies. Preserve the raw request bytes until signature verification is complete if the provider’s signing method requires them; ScreenshotMAX explicitly requires HMAC verification over the exact raw JSON body before parsing.
  • Multipart callback: Shotbot describes delivery of the result image as multipart data. Configure the route and middleware to accept multipart requests rather than assuming the image arrives as JSON.
  • Success acknowledgement: Return the documented success status only after your receiver has accepted the event for processing. ScreenshotMAX and Shotbot require a 2xx response; follow the chosen provider’s instructions for the precise acknowledgement behavior.
  • Failure handling: Persist enough information to investigate rejected or malformed deliveries, but do not treat an unverified callback as a trusted capture result.

Availability caveat: verify the live deployment

Documentation for screenshotapis.org describes webhook_url as an asynchronous delivery option, but its page also says: “Currently unavailable: async callbacks return 503 without charging a credit on this deployment. Use synchronous rendering.” Check the status for the exact deployment you plan to use before relying on callbacks; a documented protocol does not prove the feature is currently enabled. screenshotapis.org documentation.

  • The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.

Troubleshooting callback failures

  • The callback never arrives: Confirm that the URL is publicly reachable, that asynchronous mode and the callback field are set on the correct capture operation, and that callbacks are enabled for your deployment. For Shotbot, check callback status through its documented status endpoint.
  • You receive 400 callback_url_wrong_endpoint: For Shotbot, submit callback captures through POST /capture/callback; its ordinary POST /capture endpoint is for polling.
  • The provider reports a failed upload or delivery: Check that the route accepts the provider’s method and content type and returns the expected acknowledgement. Shotbot identifies upload_failed as endpoint refusal in its status information.
  • Signature validation fails: Use the correct signing secret, not an API key where the provider distinguishes them. For ScreenshotMAX, verify HMAC SHA-256 against the untouched raw JSON request body before parsing. Follow each provider’s own signature construction rules.
  • The initial response has no image: That is expected for an asynchronous job. The initial response indicates acceptance or queueing; handle the later callback as the completion event.
  • The callback route works locally but not from the provider: Local-only addresses are not publicly reachable. Expose the development receiver through a suitable tunnel or deploy it to a reachable environment.

Or skip the browser setup

If you do not need to build and operate your own browser capture pipeline, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. It uses a direct GET request for a capture rather than requiring you to configure an asynchronous callback. The request below saves a WebP screenshot; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card required; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is webhook_url a standard field for every screenshot API?

No. Use the field and capture endpoint documented by your specific provider; Shotbot, for example, requires a dedicated callback route and uses callback_url.

Does HTTP 202 mean the screenshot is ready?

No. It indicates that an asynchronous job was accepted or queued; the result is delivered later through the configured callback.
