Lower the bitrate in the encoder sending video to Switchboard Live—not in Switchboard’s workflow monitor. In OBS, open Settings → Output, change Output Mode to Advanced, then adjust the streaming bitrate while keeping Rate Control set to CBR. Choose a value that fits your resolution, frame rate, and stable upload capacity, then test and monitor YouTube’s stream health.
Where to change the bitrate
Switchboard Live’s workflow page displays the incoming bitrate and FPS below the stream preview. That tells you what the sending encoder is delivering; the reviewed workflow documentation does not identify the monitor as a bitrate control. Change the setting in the encoder that sends the video to Switchboard.
In OBS
- Open OBS and select Settings → Output.
- Set Output Mode to Advanced.
- Under streaming output settings, adjust the bitrate.
- Keep Rate Control set to CBR.
Switchboard’s OBS instructions say the appropriate settings depend on upload speed and the destinations being used. Its initial setup guidance recommends a two-second keyframe rate. YouTube specifies CBR for RTMP/RTMPS and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. YouTube’s encoder settings provide the destination-specific reference.
Confirm the source feed and YouTube status separately
After changing the encoder setting, check the incoming bitrate in Switchboard’s workflow view and check destination-side stream health and messages in YouTube Live Control Room. These are separate checks: Switchboard reports the feed arriving from the encoder, while YouTube reports the status it sees at its end. Switchboard’s workflow page guide describes the incoming indicators.

Choose a bitrate for your format
There is no single correct bitrate for every stream. YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations vary by resolution and frame rate. The figures below are YouTube’s recommended rates and minimums, in Mbps, on its encoder-settings page accessed October 3, 2026; they are reference points, not a guarantee that a given change will fix every dropped-frame cause.

These values are for H.264; YouTube publishes separate recommendations for AV1 and H.265. If your upload connection cannot reliably sustain the rate for your chosen format, lower the bitrate and retest. If that is not enough, consider whether a lower resolution or frame rate is acceptable for the broadcast. Switchboard Connect’s encoder guide states a 2 Mbps minimum video bitrate and minimum 720p at 30 fps; that is Switchboard’s minimum guidance, not a substitute for YouTube’s format-specific recommendations. Switchboard’s encoder settings guide is older than YouTube’s current destination guidance.

Test before the broadcast and monitor during it
- Run a test using audio and movement similar to what you expect in the actual stream. YouTube’s guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”
- Check that the encoder is sending the intended resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to Switchboard.
- Review YouTube’s stream health and messages during the event, alongside Switchboard’s incoming bitrate indicator. YouTube advises: “During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.”

Troubleshooting dropped frames
YouTube still reports dropped frames after lowering the bitrate
Compare the chosen bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate. Also check whether the connection can sustain that output. If not, test a lower bitrate and, if needed, a lower resolution or frame rate.

Switchboard’s incoming bitrate looks right, but YouTube reports a problem
Use YouTube Live Control Room’s health indicators and messages to investigate the destination-side warning. A healthy-looking incoming figure in Switchboard does not replace checking what YouTube reports.
You cannot find a bitrate setting in Switchboard
That is expected in the documented workflow: Switchboard’s page shows the incoming feed status, while the bitrate is adjusted in the sending encoder. In OBS, use Settings → Output and set Output Mode to Advanced.

You want to change bitrate while already live
The reviewed official instructions do not establish one universal way to change bitrate during an active stream across encoders. Check the documentation for your specific encoder before changing a live broadcast; where possible, make and test the adjustment before the event.
