Yes. You can close a published Google Form manually, at a chosen date and time, or after a selected number of responses. To limit repeat submissions instead, turn on Limit to 1 response—respondents must sign in to a Google Account. These controls solve different problems, and a response-count limit can be exceeded when people submit at the same time.
Choose the control that fits your goal
| Control | What it limits | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Turn off accepting responses | All new submissions | Close the form manually when you are ready. |
| Set a close date or time | Submissions after a chosen deadline | Close registration or a survey at a particular time. |
| Set a response-count limit | Total submissions to the form | Stop accepting responses after an approximate capacity is reached. |
| Limit to 1 response | Repeat submissions by a signed-in Google Account | Reduce duplicate submissions from the same account. |
The first three options close the form to new responses; Limit to 1 response is a separate per-account setting and does not set a total cap. Google’s instructions describe these controls in its form response management help and response settings help.

Set a maximum number of responses
- Open the published form.
- At the upper right, open Published.
- Under Accepting responses, choose Set close date or response limit.
- Select After a number of responses and enter the maximum.
- If the form already has responses, enter a limit greater than its current response count.
- Optionally change the message respondents see after the form closes.
The same publishing controls let you choose a closing date and time. To close the form immediately yourself, turn off Accepting responses. Respondents may still open the published form after closure, but they see the closure message instead of submitting a response, according to Google’s help page.

Limit each person to one response
- Open Settings and expand Responses.
- Turn on Limit to 1 response.
Respondents must sign in with a Google Account to use this setting. Google says usernames are not recorded unless the form owner enables email collection. The control is for repeat submissions by an account, not for setting a maximum number of responses; see Google’s response settings instructions.

Know the limits of a response-count cap
A configured total is not a guaranteed hard stop when submissions arrive simultaneously. Google states that if multiple people respond at the exact same time, the form accepts responses regardless of the response limit. That makes the count limit suitable for approximate capacity, but not for guaranteeing a fixed number of places in a time-sensitive registration process. For details, see Google’s response management help.
If the close control is missing
Google’s Help Center currently describes automatic closure by date/time or response count. A Google Docs Editors Community announcement dated January 23, 2026 said the feature was rolling out to personal Google Account users, Workspace Individual subscribers, and Google Workspace customers, and that it was off by default. The interface can vary as features roll out or change, so check the form’s Published controls if the option is not visible. The announcement is available at Google Docs Editors Community.

Do not confuse your cap with Google Forms’ service capacity
Google’s help page says that, starting in September 2026, Forms can receive up to 500,000 responses per form and has a 1 GB total storage limit per form. These are Google service capacity figures, not the owner-selected limit that closes one form. Google also lists thresholds where features may be affected: response summaries may be unavailable above 50,000 responses, Sheets synchronization may be affected above 100,000, and question or individual response views may be unavailable above 10,000. Those thresholds are feature-specific, not universal response caps. See Google’s help page.
