Set your maximum bid by starting with the most you can spend in total, then subtracting the auction’s estimated fees, taxes, shipping, and other charges. The result is your maximum hammer bid—the amount you will bid for the lot itself. Check how the specific auction handles automatic bids, reserves, increments, ties, and bid changes before submitting: a maximum is a limit, not a guarantee that you will win or pay that exact amount.
How much should you bid at an auction?
Choose a walk-away limit based on what the item is worth to you and what you can afford to spend overall. There is no universal bid ceiling or proven formula that guarantees a good price. Decide the limit before competitive bidding begins, so another bidder’s activity does not set your budget for you.

Let your total spending limit be B. Estimate the buyer’s premium, shipping or delivery, taxes, and any other charges that apply under the sale’s terms. Then calculate:

This subtraction is straightforward only when the extra costs are fixed amounts. If a fee is a percentage of the hammer price, use the auction’s calculator or terms to work out the affordable hammer amount; do not subtract an arbitrary flat estimate. Christie’s directs buyers to a lot cost calculator for estimates of buyer’s premium and shipping, while Sotheby’s points buyers to the applicable buyer conditions. Rates and charges vary by sale, so neither example supplies a universal fee figure: Christie’s bidding guide and Sotheby’s buyer guide.
What does a maximum or proxy bid do?
A maximum, proxy, or automatic bid usually tells the platform or auction house the highest amount you authorize it to bid for you. If competing bids arrive, the system may raise the visible bid in the increments required by that auction, stopping at your limit. The precise behavior depends on the platform and sale. Your maximum does not automatically win the lot. Another bidder may have entered a higher limit; the seller’s reserve may not be met; or, under some systems, an identical maximum entered earlier may take priority. Read the terms for the actual auction rather than assuming that proxy bidding works identically everywhere.

Fees, taxes, and delivery
Confirm the buyer’s premium and any shipping, tax, or other charges that could apply to you. A displayed bid is not necessarily the final amount you owe. Use the lot-specific estimate or sale conditions where available.

Bid increments
The auction may require each new bid to exceed the current bid by a set increment. The schedule is specific to the platform or sale; Christie’s says its predetermined increments appear in its Conditions of Sale. A maximum can therefore be higher than the visible bid without the system immediately displaying your full limit. Christie’s bidding guide.
Reserve price
A reserve is the seller’s minimum acceptable price under the auction’s rules. A bid below it may be treated differently from one that meets or exceeds it. Auction House UK explains reserve handling for its online auctions, and Sotheby’s notes that seller bidding up to the reserve may apply in specified circumstances. Tied maximum bids
Some systems give priority to the identical bid received first. Auction House UK and Christie’s describe that rule for their respective systems; it should not be assumed for other auctions. Auction House UK’s online bidding guide and Christie’s bidding guide.
Closing extensions
A timed auction may extend a lot’s closing time when a bid arrives near the deadline. The extension rules differ: Auction House UK describes a 60-second window, while Christie’s describes a three-minute extension in the circumstance outlined in its guide. Whether bids can be changed or withdrawn
Do not assume you can lower or cancel a bid after submitting it. Auction.com says a maximum bid can be decreased or removed only within an hour of submission and before bidding begins; once bidding starts, it cannot be lowered or removed, though it may be increased. Christie’s says submitted bids cannot be canceled. These policies apply to their described systems and sales, not to every auction. These labels do not mean the same thing at every auction. Sotheby’s distinguishes advance and absentee bids: it says absentee bids are executed at the lowest price possible as determined at the auctioneer’s discretion, up to the indicated amount, and that advance bids can be automatically executed in response to other bids. Auction House UK and Christie’s also describe automatic maximum bidding on their platforms. Set and submit your limit
- Inspect the lot. Decide what it is worth to you before following competitive bidding.
- Set your total budget. Include the likely premium, shipping or delivery, taxes, and any other applicable charges.
- Derive the hammer ceiling. Leave enough room in your total budget for those additional costs; use the auction’s calculator or terms when fees depend on the bid amount.
- Read the current sale rules. Check increments, reserves, tie priority, closing extensions, and whether bids can be reduced or canceled.
- Confirm what “maximum” means on that interface. Make sure you are entering a limit rather than an amount you intend to pay immediately.
- Submit the limit and stick to it. If bidding passes your ceiling, stop rather than raising it solely because someone else is competing.
