To change the image shown when someone shares a page you own in Microsoft Teams, add an og:image Open Graph tag to that page’s HTML. Add og:title and og:description too. If the link belongs to a domain handled by your Teams app, you can instead build an app-based link-unfurling response with a custom card.
Set the preview image on a website you own
Microsoft’s Share to Teams guidance maps the preview thumbnail to the page’s og:image metadata. Put the tags in the page’s HTML <head>, and use an image URL that points to the image you want shared. Microsoft recommends providing the image, title, and description together for best results.

- Open the HTML template or page for the URL people will share.
- In its
<head>, add page-specific Open Graph metadata. Replace the sample values with the actual page title, summary, and publicly reachable image URL:<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/images/page-preview.jpg">
<meta property="og:title" content="Page title">
<meta property="og:description" content="A concise description of this page."> - Publish the change, then share the page URL in Teams to inspect its preview.
Use an image selected for that specific page rather than assuming one image will suit every URL. Microsoft documents the metadata field and example URL form, but does not set a universal image dimension requirement in the cited guidance or promise identical rendering in every Teams client. See Microsoft’s Share to Teams documentation.

Microsoft also documents schema.org JSON-LD micro-capabilities for rich previews of website links without installing a Teams app. This route uses an application/ld+json script in the page and the schema properties supported by Teams micro-capability templates. Follow Microsoft’s supported types and property requirements rather than assuming arbitrary structured data will become a preview: Micro-Capability & Schema for Web Links.

When you need a custom card for a domain your Teams app controls
For a domain registered to your Teams app, implement link unfurling. The app manifest declares domains under composeExtensions and messageHandlers. When a matching link is pasted, Teams sends a link query to your app’s service, which returns a card that can include an image. This requires app and service implementation; it is not a user setting for changing previews on arbitrary third-party links. Read Microsoft’s link-unfurling guide.
- Microsoft documents a 30-minute cache for app-based unfurling results. This cache detail applies to that implementation, not necessarily to ordinary website metadata previews.
- The documented feature supports Adaptive Cards version 1.3 and earlier.
- Mobile support is limited to links that do not require authentication.
Choose the right implementation
| Route | Use it when | What you change |
|---|---|---|
| Open Graph metadata | You own the website and want to set its shared image, title, and description. | Page-level HTML metadata, especially og:image. |
| Schema.org JSON-LD | You want to use Teams’ documented website micro-capability templates for rich previews. | Structured data in an application/ld+json script. |
| App link unfurling | You publish a Teams app that handles links on its registered domains and need a custom card. | App manifest domain declarations and a service that returns the card. |
Troubleshoot a preview that does not show the image
- Check the shared page’s metadata: make sure
og:imageis in the HTML head of the exact URL being pasted, and that its content value is the intended image URL. - Include the companion fields: Microsoft recommends
og:titleandog:descriptionalongside the image. - Confirm the correct route: Open Graph or schema.org is the website-owner route; app link unfurling applies to app-handled registered domains and requires an app service.
- For app unfurling, account for documented behavior: results are cached for 30 minutes, and mobile support is limited to unauthenticated links.

If you need a screenshot of a page while checking its appearance or metadata-related changes, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It does not change what Teams uses to construct a link preview; it captures the rendered page. Its API accepts one GET request for an image or PDF. For example, this cURL call captures a page as WebP:
