A YouTube channel can run up to 10 active streams at once, and each stream key can be used for up to three active streams. YouTube applies both limits at the same time, so reaching either cap prevents you from starting another stream. YouTube Help publishes these platform limits.
How YouTube’s two limits work
- Channel-wide limit: Up to 10 active streams on one channel.
- Per-key limit: Up to three active streams using one stream key.
The limits are concurrent: a channel must remain below both. For example, three streams using the same key reach that key’s cap even though the channel-wide limit has not been reached. Using another key can avoid that per-key cap, but it does not raise the channel ceiling of 10.

These figures describe active streams, not the number of broadcasts a channel can schedule or run at different times. If you have reached a limit, end an active stream before trying to start another.
What counts as a separate stream?
Independent live events
The 10-stream limit concerns distinct active broadcasts on the channel. If you are creating separate live events, each counts toward the channel’s active-stream total.

Horizontal and vertical dual format
YouTube’s horizontal-plus-vertical dual-format feature presents viewers with different formats through one shared stream URL and shared chat. It is a viewing-format feature, not a way to create extra independent live events beyond the channel limit. See YouTube’s live-streaming guidance.
Streaming to other platforms
Simulstreaming means sending a feed to multiple destinations. YouTube describes doing this from a local encoder or through a cloud relay, but that distribution does not remove YouTube’s limit on active streams within one channel. Details are in YouTube’s guidance on streaming across platforms.

What you need before starting another broadcast
Being under the stream caps does not guarantee that a channel can go live. YouTube says a channel must be verified, have live streaming enabled, and have had no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. Enabling a channel’s first live stream can take up to 24 hours. Check these account conditions if you cannot start a broadcast despite having room under both limits. Plan the production as well as the stream count
Running several broadcasts at once can place substantial demands on your upload connection and production setup. YouTube recommends keeping total stream bitrate within available upload capacity and allowing 20% headroom. That is a reliability recommendation, not a separate concurrency limit. Set up encoders ahead of time, check each stream in Live Control Room preview, and monitor stream quality once live. YouTube’s streaming tips and encoder setup guidance cover these practices.

An encoder is useful for productions involving screen sharing, gameplay, external audio or video equipment, or more advanced setups. YouTube provides a list of verified encoder options in its encoder-streaming guide. An encoder is not required simply to use the channel’s allowed stream count, and buying one does not increase either YouTube limit.
