How to Set a Lighting Schedule for a Saltwater Aquarium

For coral tanks, use a consistent timer-controlled daily cycle as a starting point. Learn how to apply the 10–12-hour guidance without treating it as a universal preset.

For a saltwater aquarium with photosynthetic corals, set a consistent daily light cycle with a timer. NOAA Sea Grant’s general starting point is 10–12 hours of light per day; it also gives 100–200 µmol/m²/s measured at coral depth as a broad intensity range that appears sufficient for many coral species. Neither figure is a universal preset: the right light depends on the coral, its placement and its previous light exposure.

Set the schedule for the animals in your tank

The 10–12-hour guidance is for coral care, not a proven schedule for every saltwater aquarium. The sources cited here do not establish an ideal photoperiod for a fish-only tank or a universal schedule for preventing algae. If your aquarium contains corals, account for their species and, where known, their reef origin and natural depth or their prior captive lighting. NOAA Sea Grant’s coral-culture manual notes that corals need suitable light intensity, duration and quality, and recommends slow acclimation to a new regime.

How to set a coral tank’s daily cycle

  1. Identify the corals and their light history. Different species can have different needs. The Ornamental Aquatic Trade Association notes that some soft corals do well in relatively dim light, while others grow faster under brighter conditions; its soft-coral care sheet does not prescribe one photoperiod for all of them.
  2. Choose a repeatable 10–12-hour on-period as a starting point. NOAA Sea Grant’s manual gives this general daily range for corals and recommends controlling the cycle with a timer. Set the on and off times to suit your routine, then keep them consistent.
  3. Use an aquarium light timer for basic switching. A mechanical or digital outlet timer can turn a compatible light on and off at the same times every day. Check that the light resumes the intended state after a power interruption.
  4. Check intensity at coral depth if possible. NOAA Sea Grant gives 100–200 µmol/m²/s, measured where the coral sits, as an intensity range that appears sufficient for many species. Treat it as broad guidance, not a target for every coral. Fixture wattage or how bright a light looks to you does not establish the intensity reaching the coral.
  5. Acclimate corals gradually when introducing them or changing the light. NOAA advises slow acclimation to any new lighting regime. OATA’s coral-polyp care sheet recommends switching aquarium lights off while unpacking a new coral, avoiding bright light during introduction and monitoring it closely during its first week. The cited guidance does not specify a universal starting percentage or day-by-day increase.

When to use dimming, ramps or PAR measurement

A timer controls when a light switches on and off; it does not dim the fixture, create gradual transitions, measure PAR or ensure the spectrum suits a coral. Those tasks require compatible dimmable lighting or a controller and, for intensity measurement, an appropriate PAR meter. Their value depends on the setup and the corals being kept.

Gradual ramps are an option if your light supports them, but there is no established universal ramp duration for home aquariums in the sources cited here. A 2021 Frontiers in Marine Science coral-spawning study used a specific controlled cycle with three-hour ramps and adjusted maximum intensity approximately monthly. That experimental schedule is not a validated default for a home reef.

Likewise, a controlled study of Goniopora columna compared six-hour and twelve-hour illumination groups under its experimental conditions. Those results concern that species and setup; they do not identify a suitable schedule for every saltwater aquarium. See the study in Animals.

Common lighting-schedule mistakes

  • Treating the photoperiod as the whole answer. A suitable number of hours does not guarantee the right intensity or spectrum for a particular coral.
  • Choosing by wattage or visual brightness alone. These do not tell you the light intensity at the coral’s depth.
  • Changing to a brighter regime abruptly. Acclimate corals gradually rather than applying an assumed percentage schedule.
  • Copying a research or controller preset. Experimental schedules are tied to particular species and conditions, not general-purpose home-aquarium defaults.
