How to Set a Different Nest Doorbell Ringtone for Each Doorbell

Choose a theme or chime sound in each doorbell’s settings, using Google Home for newer models and the Nest app for supported legacy doorbells.

To give each Nest Doorbell a different sound, open the settings for that specific doorbell in its supported app and choose a doorbell theme or chime sound. Use Google Home for newer models; supported legacy models may offer the setting in the Nest app. Google documents the control for individual devices, but does not explicitly guarantee that every multi-doorbell setup can keep distinct sounds assigned at the same time.

Change the sound from each doorbell’s settings

  1. Choose the right app. Newer Nest cameras and doorbells use Google Home; Google says the Nest app is not compatible with newer models. Supported legacy doorbells may still have settings in the Nest app. Google’s camera and doorbell settings guidance explains the model distinction.
  2. Open the settings for one doorbell. In Google Home, select the specific doorbell, open its settings, and look under Doorbell settings for a theme or chime sound. Google documents selecting a different chime sound there. For supported legacy models, look for Doorbell themes in the Nest app.
  3. Choose a sound, then repeat for the other doorbells. Make the selection separately from each device’s settings. This is the documented device-by-device method; whether distinct choices remain assigned simultaneously can depend on the models and setup, and Google’s instructions do not explicitly promise that combination.

Know which sound setting you are changing

A doorbell theme or ringtone changes the sound played at the doorbell. If visitor announcements are enabled on a compatible Google Nest or Home speaker or display, the selected seasonal sound also plays for those announcements. This is separate from the control for the existing indoor chime.

Google Home and the Nest app provide indoor-chime controls for supported devices. Quiet Time temporarily mutes the indoor chime and visitor announcements, though the app may still send a notification. Google’s audio-settings instructions distinguish these controls.

Why an option may be missing

  • You are using the wrong app for the model. Check the doorbell’s model and use Google Home for newer models; the Nest app’s Doorbell themes setting is for supported legacy devices.
  • The sound is seasonal. Google offers some themes around particular holidays. When the holiday ends, the seasonal theme disappears from the app and the doorbell returns to its default tone.
  • You are looking for digital-chime duration rather than a ringtone. That control changes how long a digital indoor chime plays; it does not select the doorbell’s theme. It is for digital chimes on wired Nest Doorbells connected to the home’s doorbell system. Battery-powered doorbells cannot use a digital chime.

When Google’s ringtone design details are useful

Google Nest Audio UX Designer Benjamin Decker wrote in 2022 that the team’s design rule was to keep ringtones to no more than 10 seconds, so visitors would not become impatient. That describes Google’s design approach, not a setting or a guarantee about the current sound catalog. Decker’s article on Nest doorbell ringtone design provides that background.
