Sapphire Crystal vs. Mineral Glass: Which Is Better for a G-SHOCK?

Sapphire is the better G-SHOCK crystal if your main concern is resisting everyday scratches. Casio rates sapphire at 9 on the Mohs hardness scale and mineral glass at 5. That does not mean sapphire is unbreakable or that it always survives impacts better. Crystal type varies by model, so check the exact reference before buying.

How sapphire and mineral glass compare

Factor Sapphire crystal Mineral glass
Casio’s stated Mohs hardness 9 5
What the rating indicates Greater resistance to scratching than mineral glass in Casio’s comparison More susceptible to scratching than sapphire in Casio’s comparison
What it does not establish That sapphire is unbreakable or has superior impact survival in every situation That every mineral-glass G-SHOCK is less durable overall

Casio’s hardness figures are general manufacturer guidance, not results from a controlled G-SHOCK impact test. The sources do not establish which material performs better when otherwise equivalent watches take a hard impact. Casio’s sapphire guidance also cautions that sapphire is not unbreakable.

What the model examples show

G-SHOCK does not use one crystal material across the range. Casio lists mineral glass for the GA-2100SRS-7A and sapphire crystal with an inner-surface anti-reflective coating for the MRG-B5000D-1. Casio’s MR-G materials page describes sapphire and anti-reflective coating in that line; do not assume every sapphire G-SHOCK has the same coating.

These are examples from different product tiers, not a controlled comparison of crystal material. Casio specifies both watches as shock resistant and water resistant to 200 metres, but their other construction and features differ, and the product pages do not provide a matched laboratory comparison of their crystals.

Which crystal should you choose?

Choose sapphire if avoiding scratches matters most

If visible scratches from ordinary contact are your main concern, sapphire’s higher stated hardness makes it the stronger choice on that measure. It is still possible to damage sapphire; hardness should not be read as immunity from chips, cracks or breakage.

Mineral glass is still a valid G-SHOCK specification

A mineral-glass model may suit you if its overall features and price fit better and you accept greater scratch susceptibility relative to sapphire. The crystal material alone does not determine a watch’s overall toughness.

Compare the whole watch, not just its crystal

Weigh the exact model’s specifications, price, features and expected wear. The available Casio information answers the scratch-hardness comparison, but not which crystal would better withstand a particular impact in otherwise equivalent watches.

How to check a G-SHOCK’s crystal before buying

  1. Find the full model reference on the listing or watch, including its suffix.
  2. Open Casio’s official product page for that exact reference and confirm the crystal material in its specifications. Regional pages may differ, so verify the reference and regional listing you intend to buy.
  3. Check separately for coating details if readability or reflections matter; coating information is model-specific.
  4. Compare the remaining features and price before deciding whether sapphire’s scratch resistance is worth prioritizing for your use.

A note on Casio’s blue-sapphire announcement

On October 1, 2026, Casio announced the MRG-D5000, describing it as the first G-SHOCK timepiece to use components made with blue sapphire crystal in a shock-resistant structure. Casio said production would be limited to 20 pieces worldwide. Its product page labels the watch “NEW 12/2026,” a date after the announcement; it should therefore be understood as announced, not already available as of October 4, 2026. This announcement concerns blue-sapphire components and the watch’s structure, not a change to the crystal material used across G-SHOCK models. Casio’s announcement
