Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo make Nginx send every unmatched domain to a predictable fallback, mark one server block as default_server on the relevant listen socket. The commonly used server_name _; line is only a conventional invalid name; it does not catch domains by itself. Without an explicit default, Nginx uses the first server block configured for that address and port, which can expose an unrelated site when a request arrives with an unknown Host header.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
Use a separate fallback for each exposed socket, decide whether it should close the connection, return an HTTP error, or serve an isolated page, and configure port 443 independently from port 80. The HTTPS fallback also needs a certificate because TLS server selection can happen during the handshake, before Nginx reads the HTTP Host header.

What Nginx means by a default site
Nginx does not select a virtual host by looking at the domain name alone. It first selects the group of server blocks attached to the destination address and port in the listen directive. It then compares the request name with each block’s server_name values.
For a named HTTP request, Nginx checks exact names first. If there is no exact match, it checks the longest leading wildcard, then the longest trailing wildcard, and finally the first matching regular expression. When no name matches, the request goes to the default server for that address and port. A request without a usable Host header follows the same per-port default behavior.

The default is therefore a property of a listening socket, not a global setting. A default on IPv4 port 80 does not automatically apply to IPv6 port 80, port 443, or another custom port.

The minimal HTTP fallback
Place the fallback in its own server block and mark every HTTP socket that should use it:
server {
listen 80 default_server;
listen [::]:80 default_server;
server_name _;
return 444;
}
Here, default_server is the setting that controls selection. The underscore is simply an invalid, conventional name that is unlikely to intersect with a real hostname. NGINX’s server-name documentation notes that there is nothing special about this name; it is one of many invalid domain names. It is not a wildcard and does not mean “all domains.”
You may omit server_name when you intentionally want the empty-name behavior, or use an explicit empty name in a dedicated block. Keep your actual sites in separate blocks with their real names:
server {
listen 80;
listen [::]:80;
server_name www.example.com example.com;
root /var/www/example;
index index.html;
}
Only one block can be the default for a particular address-and-port combination. If two blocks use default_server on the same socket, Nginx reports a duplicate-default configuration error instead of starting with an ambiguous choice.
Choose what unmatched requests should do
A fallback is useful only when its response is deliberate. Select the behavior that fits your threat model and operational needs.
| Action | Configuration | What clients receive | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Close the connection | return 444; |
Nginx closes the connection without sending a normal HTTP response | Scanners, random hostnames, and traffic that should not receive any page |
| Return an HTTP error | return 404; or another appropriate status |
A standards-compliant error response | When monitoring, proxies, or clients need an explicit status code |
| Serve an isolated page | A dedicated root and index or a small static response |
A controlled landing or maintenance page | When users may reach the server by IP address or an unconfigured hostname |
| Redirect | return 301 https://www.example.com$request_uri; |
A redirect to a chosen canonical site | Only when sending every unknown hostname to that site is intentional |
Status 444 is an Nginx-specific action rather than a standard HTTP status. It closes the connection, so many clients report an empty response or a connection reset. If an intermediary requires a conventional response, use 404 or another normal status instead.

Use 444 to reject unknown hosts
server {
listen 80 default_server;
listen [::]:80 default_server;
server_name _;
return 444;
}
This is a useful boundary for a server that should answer only configured domains. It avoids accidentally serving the first site’s content to typoed or hostile hostnames.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use a normal error response
server {
listen 80 default_server;
listen [::]:80 default_server;
server_name _;
return 404;
}
A 404 response is easier for synthetic monitoring, load balancers, and application logs to interpret. You can replace it with another status when your deployment has a documented reason, but do not use a redirect merely to hide a configuration mistake.
Serve a small isolated page
server {
listen 80 default_server;
listen [::]:80 default_server;
server_name _;
root /var/www/nginx-fallback;
index index.html;
}
Store only the intended fallback files beneath that directory. Do not point the block at an application’s existing document root: doing so defeats the isolation purpose and can expose a real site’s content under an unknown hostname.
Step-by-step: configure an HTTP default
- Find the active server configuration. Identify the file or included directory that contains the
serverblocks loaded by the running Nginx instance. Distribution layouts vary, so follow the includes in the main configuration rather than assuming a particular path. - Create a dedicated fallback block. Give it its own file or a clearly separated section. Use
listen 80 default_server;and, when IPv6 is exposed,listen [::]:80 default_server;. - Choose the name line. Use
server_name _;as a readable convention, or omit it when you deliberately want the empty-name behavior. Do not expect the underscore to match every hostname. - Choose one response action. Add
return 444;, a conventional error such asreturn 404;, or a dedicated static root. Keep the action simple; an unmatched request should not enter an application routing stack accidentally. - Check every real site. Each configured domain should remain in its own block with exact or intentionally scoped wildcard names. Avoid adding a broad wildcard merely to “catch” unknown domains; the socket default already handles names that do not match.
- Validate before reloading. Run your normal configuration validation, commonly
nginx -t, and correct any syntax, certificate, permission, or duplicate-default errors before applying the change. - Reload safely. Use your operating system’s standard Nginx reload procedure. A reload lets existing workers finish while new workers use the validated configuration; follow your service manager’s status output to confirm success.
- Test a known and an unknown name. Verify that a configured domain still reaches its own block and that an unconfigured name receives the fallback action. Test both address families if the service is reachable over IPv4 and IPv6.
How matching precedence affects the result
Suppose a socket has these names:
server_name example.com;
server_name *.example.com;
server_name mail.*;
server_name ~^api.(?.+)$;
An exact example.com request wins over wildcard and regular-expression candidates. Among leading wildcards, the longest matching pattern wins; among trailing wildcards, the longest matching pattern wins. Regular expressions are considered after those name classes, and the first matching expression in configuration order is selected.
If the request’s Host value matches none of those names, Nginx does not search for a vaguely similar site. It uses the block marked default_server for that socket. If no block is marked, the first listed block for that address and port becomes the implicit default. This is why a vendor-provided first site can unexpectedly appear for an IP address, a typo, or a domain whose DNS points at the server but has not been configured yet.
IPv4, IPv6, and nonstandard ports
Declare the default on each socket that should share the policy:
server {
listen 80 default_server;
listen [::]:80 default_server;
server_name _;
return 444;
}
The IPv4 and IPv6 lines are separate listeners. If only the IPv4 line is marked, an IPv6 request can still reach another block or another implicit default. Confirm that your host actually binds both addresses; adding an IPv6 listener where IPv6 is disabled can itself create a startup error.
For another port, create another default explicitly:
server {
listen 8080 default_server;
server_name _;
return 404;
}
A port-80 default has no authority over port 8080. The same rule applies to TLS port 443 and any additional listener used by a proxy, API, or internal service.

Configure the HTTPS default separately
HTTPS adds a TLS decision before ordinary HTTP request processing. During the handshake, the client can send the requested hostname through Server Name Indication (SNI). Nginx may select certificate and TLS settings at that stage; only afterward does it process the HTTP Host header. Consequently, an HTTPS fallback needs its own default listener and a certificate that is valid for the names you intend to serve, or at least an operationally acceptable certificate for unknown clients.
server {
listen 443 ssl default_server;
listen [::]:443 ssl default_server;
server_name _;
ssl_certificate /etc/ssl/example/fullchain.pem;
ssl_certificate_key /etc/ssl/example/privkey.pem;
return 444;
}
The certificate paths above are examples only. Replace them with files managed for your deployment, ensure the Nginx worker can read the private key, and keep the certificate chain appropriate for the clients you support. A port-80 fallback cannot prevent an unknown HTTPS hostname from landing on the first TLS server, because TLS selection occurs on port 443’s listener.
If you want a conventional response instead of a connection close, replace the return directive with return 404; or serve an isolated HTTPS page. Test clients that do not send SNI separately from modern clients; their behavior can differ because the certificate choice is made before the HTTP name is available.
Testing the fallback without changing DNS
You can test name selection locally by sending a chosen Host header to the server’s address. For plain HTTP, a request such as the following exercises the unmatched path while preserving the destination port:

Replace SERVER_IP with an address assigned to the Nginx host. The expected result depends on your chosen action: a closed connection for 444, a 404 response for the error variant, or the content of the isolated fallback page.
Check a configured domain in the same way:
curl -i -H 'Host: www.example.com' http://SERVER_IP/
For HTTPS, use a client option that sends both the desired SNI name and the request to the target address. A typical diagnostic form is:
curl -vk --resolve unknown.example.test:443:SERVER_IP https://unknown.example.test/
The verbose output lets you inspect the certificate presented during the handshake and the subsequent HTTP result. A certificate warning may be expected when the fallback certificate does not cover the test name; that warning is separate from whether Nginx selected the intended default block.
After testing, review access and error logs for the fallback block. Unexpected requests can reveal stale DNS records, health checks using an IP address, forgotten IPv6 exposure, or clients sending malformed host information.

Cause: The underscore is a name convention, not a catch-all switch.
Fix: Add default_server to the appropriate listen directive and ensure no other block claims the same socket as default.
The first site is exposed unintentionally
Symptom: Requests sent to the server’s IP address display a real application’s content.
Cause: No explicit default was configured, so the first listed block became the implicit default.
Fix: Create a dedicated fallback and mark it as default on every exposed address and port. Keep application roots out of that block.
Two defaults conflict
Symptom: Configuration validation fails with a duplicate-default error.
Cause: More than one server block uses default_server for the same address-and-port pair.
Fix: Leave the flag on exactly one block for that socket. It is valid to have separate defaults on different ports, such as 80 and 443.
IPv6 behaves differently
Symptom: IPv4 tests reject the unknown name, but IPv6 tests reach another site.
Best Value
Cause: The IPv6 listener was omitted or was not marked default.
Fix: Add and validate listen [::]:80 default_server; and the corresponding 443 line when IPv6 is enabled. Confirm that DNS and firewall rules actually expose the address.

HTTPS still presents another site’s certificate
Symptom: The browser reports an unexpected certificate before showing any HTTP response.
Cause: Port 443 has no explicit default, or the client did not send SNI that matches the intended block.
Fix: Configure a separate 443 default with ssl, certificate, and key directives. Remember that HTTP port 80 settings do not control TLS selection.
A redirect creates an unintended open door
Symptom: Every typoed or hostile hostname is redirected to a production site.
Cause: The fallback uses a blanket redirect without establishing that unknown names should be canonicalized.
Fix: Prefer 444 or 404 when unknown hosts should be rejected. If a redirect is required, use a fixed, trusted destination and understand that the original hostname may remain visible in logs and client history.
Operational and security considerations
- Keep the fallback boring. A short return directive or a tiny static page has fewer dependencies and less attack surface than an application.
- Do not rely on DNS for isolation. A request can reach the server by IP address even when no DNS record exists, and an attacker can send arbitrary
Hostvalues. - Separate logs when useful. A dedicated access log for the fallback can show scanning, stale records, and misrouted health checks without mixing them with normal site traffic.
- Review proxy behavior. If another proxy terminates TLS or rewrites the host, test the value that actually reaches Nginx. The fallback only sees the socket and headers presented to that Nginx instance.
- Apply policy per listener. HTTP, HTTPS, alternate ports, IPv4, and IPv6 can each have different exposure. Configure and test each one intentionally.
- Validate after every edit. A syntactically valid configuration can still have the wrong default because of an included file, listener mismatch, or certificate assignment. Check the effective configuration and perform a real unmatched-host request.
A complete two-port example
The following layout rejects unknown names on both HTTP and HTTPS while keeping a named site separate:
# HTTP fallback
server {
listen 80 default_server;
listen [::]:80 default_server;
server_name _;
return 444;
}
# HTTPS fallback
server {
listen 443 ssl default_server;
listen [::]:443 ssl default_server;
server_name _;
ssl_certificate /etc/ssl/example/fullchain.pem;
ssl_certificate_key /etc/ssl/example/privkey.pem;
return 444;
}
# Real site
server {
listen 80;
listen [::]:80;
server_name www.example.com example.com;
root /var/www/example;
}
server {
listen 443 ssl;
listen [::]:443 ssl;
server_name www.example.com example.com;
ssl_certificate /etc/ssl/example/fullchain.pem;
ssl_certificate_key /etc/ssl/example/privkey.pem;
root /var/www/example;
}
In this arrangement, a request for either configured name is handled by its matching block. A request with an unmatched name reaches the default for the relevant port, and the two protocols do not interfere with one another.
